Instructions for use Epec 4W GENERAL 1.1 Introduction The intention of this manual is to make the reader acquainted with the properties and use of the Epec 4W30 measuring equipment. If you read these instructions carefully and keep them in mind, you can more easily utilize the system efficiently and thus increase the productivity of the forest machine. 1.2 EPEC Products The Epec products are control and measuring systems manufactured by Epec Oy and intended for use in forest machines. The very newest technology in this branch has been utilized in the design and manufacture of these systems. We have paid special attention to the reliability and accuracy of the function in exacting conditions and, in spite of equipment versatility, easy operation. The Epec products have been developed in close co-operation with forest machine manufacturers, forestry companies and machine contractors in order to improve the productivity of the tree handling, measurement and harvesting. The Epec products have very versatile properties. In spite of that, the equipment has been made so easy to operate that every user is able to utilize the properties completely. 1.3 EPEC 4W30 Display Controlling switches and preselections Programming wheel Cabin module Head module In harvester head Printer (extra equipment) HUB Four wires Bus and power distribution unit

Instructions for use Epec 4W30 7 Epec 4W30 is a system designed for control of the grapple functions. There are separate control buttons for each grapple function (generally in the control levers of the machine) for control of each function separately. The tree can be fed either automatically or manually. Automatic feed is started by selecting the desired length via the preselection keyboard of the measuring equipment. Then the tree will automatically be fed to the selected length. Manual feed is carried out according to the sections Feed forward, Feed backward and Low speed in this manual. Epec 4W30 consists of three modules (display module, cabin module and grapple module), bus distribution unit, preselection keyboard (PS), programming wheel and control keys. The modules are interconnected with a CAN bus. CAN bus (Controller Area Network) is fast data transmission bus and it has high error immunity. The preselection keyboard is either integrated into the levers or installed very close to the control levers of the machine. The preselection keyboard is used for selection of the product to be made (tree species, wood type, length, tolerance and top diameter limit). In order to achieve blameless operation it is important to read the instructions for use carefully and to understand the meaning of the different settings before starting to use the equipment. The length and diameter must also be calibrated and all settings must be checked by setting a reasonable value (if necessary) for each of them. When the diameter is mentioned in this manual, it is supposed that a diameter sensor is in use. If the diameter is not in use, the diameter limits will not influence feeding to the preselected length. NOTE! Prefer not to switch the measuring equipment on until the machine is running, since there can often occur disturbances in the electric system of the forest machine in connection with start-up.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Expressions Harvester: Multi-function head (grapple): Preselections: Preselection key: Automatic feed: Control keys: Programming wheel: Cursor: Display window: Upper menu: Display key: Enter key: (green button) Machine for tree felling, delimbing and crosscutting. Harvester consists of base machine, crane and multi-function head. Multi-function head (grapple) is mounted onto a crane for tree felling, delimbing and crosscutting. This part includes saw, feed rollers, delimbing knives, gripping knives etc. Pre-programmed data (tree species, wood type, length, tolerance and top minimum) according to which the tree is crosscut into pieces of the desired lengths and diameters. Key used to make a certain preselection. Feeding to a certain length is started by pressing a preselection key. Keys used to control the mechanical actions of the grapple: for instance the sawing key. By rotating the programming wheel, the cursor is transferred in the display and adjustment values are changed. A rectangular frame that is moved in the display by means of the programming wheel. A graphical window forming a complete whole, used for display and adjustment of certain matters. Icons at the upper edge of the display. The cursor goes to the upper menu when pressing the Cancel key. When the cursor is around an icon and the Enter key is pressed, a new display window is opened. A square shaped frame appearing in the display of the display unit. The cursor is moved to this frame by rotating the programming wheel. There are two kinds of keys: Adjustment keys: pressing Enter when the frame is at the adjustment key activates the adjustment. After that, the adjustment value can be changed by rotating the programming wheel. Function keys: pressing Enter opens a new display window or activates a certain function. Key for acceptance: When the cursor is on a display key, adjustment or function is activated depending on the type of key.

Instructions for use Epec 4W30 9 Cancel key: (red button) Activation: Key for cancelling a started function: If an adjustment key is concerned, the adjustment is not accepted but the old value will still remain valid. The Cancel key is also used for moving the cursor between the upper menu and the display keys. When adjusting values, the adjustment is activated by pressing Enter. Then a shading appears around the control key in question.

Instructions for use Epec 4W USER INTERFACE The user interface of the system consists of the control keys, the preselection keys, the programming wheel, the Enter and Cancel keys of the programming wheel, the graphical display and the symbols and texts displayed. Epec 4W System Enter key Cancel key EPEC Programming wheel Preselection keys In normal harvesting situations (when felling and crosscutting trees) the driver controls the system by means of the machine control and preselection keys. The settings of the system are changed by use of the programming wheel and the Enter and Cancel keys as well as the information seen in the graphical display. NOTE! Operator can select whether the measuring equipment uses the metric system (millimetres, centimetres, metres) or the imperial system (inches, feet). The data is displayed as units of the selected measurement system. The pictures in this manual are displayed in units of metric system. For detailed information, see chapter 7.37 Selection of measurement system. MAIN DISPLAY Upper menu Length Diameter Symbol of grapple closed Preselection data Info line. 12 Instructions for use Epec 4W30 11 The different display items can be selected by rotating the programming wheel and by pressing ENTER key or CANCEL key. The preselection data can be changed by pressing the preselection key in question to the bottom, then the frame jumps to the bottom line and the data to be changed can be selected with the programming wheel. Data can be changed, provided that the grapple is kept open during the change. Switching between the different display keys or adjusting the value of an active adjustment key is done with the programming wheel. The Enter key can be used for instance to open a new display window or to activate an adjustment key for adjustment. There is a shading around the active square, i.e. the lower edge and the right edge of the key are thicker than the other edges. The Cancel key is used for switching between the upper menu and the other display keys. Cancel is also used for removal of the activation of an active display key. The Cancel key can also be used for cancellation of a printout. In that case, the Cancel key must be pressed for appr. 2 seconds. Pressing the Cancel key for 4 seconds in the main display activates the service mode, where all the parameters can be adjusted. The text "SERVICE" is displayed on the bottom line of the display, when the service mode is activated. 14 Instructions for use Epec 4W30 13 PRESELECTIONS The preselections are pre-programmed data of the different types of pieces to be produced. The preselections consist of 5 different data: Tree species, Wood type, Length, Tolerance and Top diameter minimum. Tree species Wood type Active preselection Length Tolerance Top minimum Tree species is the botanical name of the tree (i.e. fir, pine). Wood type defines the use of the piece, for instance: if the pieces are intended for manufacture of paper, the wood type can be PULP, and if the pieces will be sawed to boards, the wood type can be LOG. Length is the desired length of the pieces to be made. Tolerance is the accepted deviation from the desired length. Top diameter is the minimum acceptable top diameter (given in millimetres). When pressing the preselection after the sawing, the harvester starts to feed the tree to the length of the preselection in question, observing the crosscutting tolerance and the desired top minimum diameter of the piece. If the diameter falls below the top minimum, the feed is interrupted at the diameter limit. The sawed piece is counted into the statistics of the preselection used. The number of running meters and the number of pieces produced for each preselection are added up. If diameter is used, the volumes are calculated, and if trunk counter is used, the trunk numbers are counted too (the trunk numbers are added always into that preselection, to which the first piece of the trunk is made). CONTROL KEYS OF THE GRAPPLE The control keys of the grapple are used to control the grapple functions. In order to ensure easy working, these keys are located either in the crane levers or very close to them. More detailed information is given in section "4. Grapple functions".

Instructions for use Epec 4W FUNCTION 3.1 Initial Actions Before harvesting is started, the measuring equipment must be given information of the motion range of the grapple by opening the grapple with the key Grapple open and then closing it with the key Grapple closed. If pieces with other dimensions than those included in the system are wished to be produced, the preselection data must be changed. If harvesting is going to be started in a new working site or a new stand, the pieces of which must be counted separately, the job number must be changed. If the old data is wished to be saved, it has to be printed out. 3.2 Supposed Tree Harvesting Sequence The program of the measuring equipment supposes the trees to be felled in the following sequence: 1. After the equipment has been switched on, the grapple must first be used in opened and then in closed position, and the motion must be of the right extent (the pulse range must be sufficient, look at section "8.2 Pulse range calibration of diameter"), before the diameter is displayed (if diameter is used). Measuring equipment will not calculate the volume nor accept preselections, if the diameter is not displayed. Thus, measuring faults are avoided. Even if the diameter is not in use, the grapple must be opened and closed before the work is started. 2. To grip a standing tree the grapple had to be opened and lifted up. 3. After the tree is sawed the grapple had to be lowered in order to feed to the desired length. 4. The feed to the desired length starts when pressing the preselection and, by continuous feed (look at section "7.2 Feed method"), also after crosscut sawing (not after felling sawing). If manual feed is used during automatic feed, the automatic feed is interrupted. The automatic feed can be started again whenever wanted simply by pressing the preselection key. 5. When the tree has stopped at the desired length, the tree can be crosscutted and a new preselection can be made. The data of the produced piece is saved in the statistics of the active preselection. If trunk counter is in use, the trunk is added to that preselection, which is active when the first sawing is carried out. The length value is reset by sawing.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Different Steps of Harvesting When starting to feed the tree to the selected length, the feeding is accelerated so that the outputs "Feed forward 1" and "Feed forward 2" are controlled on consecutively. After output has been controlled on, there will pass a settable time delay (look at section "7.26 Feed delays"), before the next output is controlled on. The measuring equipment selects, based on the distance to be fed, fast speed, low speed or search pulses. All the feed modes are used, if the distance left is more than twice the braking distance of the feed mode in question. If for example the braking distance for fast feed is 200 mm, the tree is fed with this feed mode, if the distance left until the desired length is reached is more than 400 mm, otherwise the tree is fed by low speed mode. The braking distance is the distance that the tree moves after the control of the feed valves has stopped. If there does not come enough pulses from the length sensors when feeding during the slip prevention time (feed jammed), the automatic feed is interrupted. When the slip prevention is zero, it is not in use (look at section "7.31 Slip prevention"). 3.4 Volume Calculation (if diameter is in use) The diameter of the piece is measured with intervals of 10 cm while feeding forward, and only diameters smaller than the previous one are registered for volume calculation. When the piece is crosscut, the volume is calculated based on the registered length and diameter values. The tree must be fed from the butt end towards the top. If the grapple has to be opened during the feed, the volume calculation of that piece will be interrupted. The handling of this piece must be started from the beginning by sawing a disk at the butt end. 3.5 Special Situations Handling of a Dropped Tree If the tree has dropped from the grapple, the volume calculation of the tree is interrupted. Then proceed as follows: 1. Open the grapple. 2. Take the butt end of the tree into the grapple. 3. Saw a disk at the butt end. 4. Feed normally.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Handling of a Branched Tree 1. Saw the branches apart. 2. Open the grapple. 3. Take the butt end of one of the branches into the grapple. 4. Saw a disk at the butt end and feed normally. 5. Take the butt end of the other branch into the grapple. 6. Saw a disk at the butt end and feed normally Handling of a Tree Lying on the Ground 1. Open the grapple. 2. If trunk counter is in use, carry out felling sawing (lift the tilt up and carry out sawing) to increase the trunk number. 3. Take the butt end of the tree into the grapple. 4. Saw a disk at the butt end. 5. Feed normally.

Instructions for use Epec 4W GRAPPLE FUNCTIONS 4.1 Knives Open When pressing the key "Knives open", the delimbing knives and the back knife are opened as long as the key is pressed. 4.2 Knives Closed When pressing the key "Knives closed", the delimbing knives and the back knife are closed as long as the key is pressed. Knives are closed also when sawing, feeding or pressing the button "Grapple closed" is carried out. 4.3 Back Knife The back knife opens and closes simultaneously with the delimbing knives. When pressing the key "Back knife open", the back knife opens as long as the key is pressed down. 4.4 Urea Urea is in use, if the urea feeding time (setting K41) is higher than zero. Urea is activated by pressing the "Urea" key before sawing. Saw motor and urea pump are started simultaneously. After urea delay (K42) the valve is controlled with pulses. After a certain number of pulses coming from the saw position indication, the urea valve is opened for the pre-set time (urea feeding time K41). Valve opens again when sawbar has moved sufficiently (valve stays open if enough pulses are coming from the saw position indicator before valve is closed). This procedure continues until sawing is completed. If too much urea is fed, the feeding can be reduced by decreasing the urea feeding time (K41). To same extent urea feeding can be increased by increasing the setting. If there is not enough pressure in the urea pump (feed pressure is low or feed is delayed), increase the saw delay (K33). Thus, the pressure has enough time to rise.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Feed Forward When the key "Feed forward" is pressed, pump 1 starts and the feed valves are controlled on, one after the other, with intervals according to the pre-set feed delays (K34). Pump 2 starts, when the last (uppermost) valve is opened. At the beginning of the feed, the equipment gives a short control Knives open. When approaching the selected length, the feed outputs are switched off step by step. First pump 2 is released and the uppermost valve is closed. When the length has been reached, pump 1 is released and the last valve (the lowermost direction valve) is controlled to close. When feeding forward, it is possible to use a valve to control the grapple downwards (otherwise, the grapple remains released). Function is selected from setting tilt down during feed (K49). When the tree has stopped, pump 1 starts again for the pre-set pump release delay (K35). 4.6 Feed Backward When the key "Feed backward" is pressed, pump 1 starts and the direction valves are controlled on with the pre-set interval feed delays (K34). At the beginning of the feed, the equipment gives a short control Knives open. When the length has been reached, pump 1 is released and the lowermost direction valve is controlled to close. When the tree has stopped, pump 1 starts again for the pre-set pump release delay (K35). 4.7 Low Speed When pressing simultaneously the keys "Grapple closed" and "Feed forward" or "Feed backward", pump 1 starts, and after the pre-set feed delay (K34) the lowermost direction valve is controlled on. An oil flow corresponding to the low speed is achieved either by controlling the lowermost direction valve mentioned above with short pulses or, if a pump with adjustable volume is used, the pump output is controlled according to the low speed setting (K7). At the beginning of the feed, the equipment gives a short control Knives open. When the length has been reached, pump 1 is released and the lowermost direction valve is controlled to close. When the tree has stopped, pump 1 starts again after the pre-set pump release delay (K35).

Instructions for use Epec 4W Grapple Open When the key "Grapple open" is pressed, the delimbing knives, the back knife and the feed rollers are opened as long as the key is pressed. Pump 1 remains in operation as long as the feed rollers move. When the grapple is in open position, the sawing function is prevented. 4.9 Grapple Closed When the button "Grapple closed" is pressed, the delimbing knives and the back knife are closed, and after a preset feed roller delay (K47) the feed rollers are closed. During the feed, the delimbing knives, the back knife and the feed rollers are closed simultaneously. Pump 1 remains in operation as long as the feed rollers are moving Sawing When pressing the key "Saw", the feed rollers and the knives are closed, and pump 1 starts. After the pre-set saw delay (K33), pump 2 starts, the saw comes out of the saw casing and cuts the tree. When the saw button is released, the saw chain stops and the sawbar returns into the casing. Pump 1 remains in operation until the sawbar is in its casing. When the sawbar is outside the casing, feed forward and backward is prevented. The grapple can be opened by pressing simultaneously the keys "Saw" and "Grapple open". It is possible, however, to feed backward by pressing simultaneously the keys "Saw", "Feed backward" and "Grapple closed". Pressing the sawing key resets the errors of the length and diameter sensor. The prevented oversawing prevents saw motion over the tree stem. The length of the saw motion is in proportion to the tree diameter. When pressing the key "Grapple closed" simultaneously with sawing, prevented oversawing is not valid. The clearing function can be used by lifting the tilt up and by pressing simultaneously keys "Grapple open" and "Saw". The clearing can be used for example for removing the thicket from the working site.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Tilt Up / Down The tilt function can be connected to operate in three different ways: 1. Tilt up and Tilt down operate with the same key, i.e. when the tilt is in its lower position, it will be lifted when pressing the key, and when the tilt is in its upper position, it will be lowered when pressing the key. 2. Tilt up and Tilt down operate each with their own key. 3. Tilt is released by sawing. TILT UP (when the tilt is in its lower position) When pressing the key "Tilt up", the knives and feed rollers open and the tilt is lifted. Pump 1 remains in operation as long as the feed rollers move. The tilt can also be lifted with the grapple closed by keeping the key "Grapple closed" pressed to the bottom when pressing the key "Tilt up". Now the grapple is not opened, and the following sawing will not be classified as a felling sawing. When the tilt is in its upper position, it is possible to feed only by low speed. (The lowermost direction valve in operation.) TILT DOWN (when the tilt is in its upper position) When pressing the key "Tilt down", the tilt is lowered. The motion tilt down can be set to be carried out automatically after felling sawing from the setting Tilt down (K46).

Instructions for use Epec 4W PRINTING Preselection line data Preselection data Printout buttons Preselection line data The data of active preselection: PreS = Preselection number Rm = Total running meters of produced pieces Spc = Number of produced pieces m3 = Volume of produced pieces Preselection data Tree species, wood type, length, tolerance, and top minimum of active preselection. Printout buttons Four display buttons, which are used to select a desired printout. Printout buttons are visible only when a printer is connected to the measuring equipment. NOTE! The printouts can be taken if printer is connected and it was in on-line mode during the start-up of the measuring equipment. NOTE! The grapple must be in open position before a printout can be taken. NOTE! The printing is interrupted by keeping the Cancel key pressed to the bottom for appr. 2 seconds. This will also interrupt the printout if the printing has been started even though printer is not switched on. NOTE! If you are using the imperial system of measurement (see setting 48), only Pieces printout can be printed in imperial units. Other printouts are printed in metric system units.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Pieces Prints out the job number and the pieces made for the preselections: tree species, wood type, length, running meters, number of pieces, volumes (if volume calculation is in use) and trunk numbers (if trunk counter is in use). 5.2 Millimeter Printout (Stem profile) The printer prints out all the length/diameter data pairs. Printout can be used for the calibration of the measuring accuracy. The information of the sawed piece can be printed after the piece is sawed. 5.3 Printout of Calibration Data Detailed calibration data of length and diameter. 5.4 Piece Printout Printout, when sawing, of the running number of the diameter class of the piece, the top diameter, volume and length. Printing is started by pressing the "Piece-print" button. Text "Pieceprint" is shown in black background indicating that Piece-print is activated. Printing can be stopped by pressing the "Piece-print" button again. NOTE! Piece printout cannot be terminated by switching off the power from the measuring equipment. 5.5 Number of Trunks (Printer not in use) If printer is not in use, the trunks made for active preselection are displayed in the printout window:

Instructions for use Epec 4W PROGRAMMING OF PRESELECTIONS Change of data of preselection / preselection key active. The tree species is being changed. This mode is activated by pressing the desired preselection for 4 seconds when the grapple is open. The name of the tree species can be selected among 12 possible names and the name of the wood type among 9 possible names. Tree species Length Tolerance Top minimum Wood type 1. Open the grapple. Then press the preselection key, the data of which you want to change, for 4 seconds. 2. The preselection data is changed into the data programmed for that key, and this data is displayed. 3. Select the data to be changed with the programming wheel and activate the change with Enter. When data is being changed, the display of this data is shown in black background. 4. Acknowledge or cancel the change by pressing Enter or Cancel. 5. The programming mode is deactivated by pressing Cancel. NOTE! If pieces have been made to the preselection, the tree species or the length of such preselection cannot be changed. In that case, the changes has to be made when changing the job number (setting number 1). Number ranges of the data: 1. Tree species, range Wood type, range Length, range cm. 4. Tolerance, range 0 99 mm. The length tolerance is the accepted length deviation from the desired length. If the tolerance setting is for instance 30 mm, the length of a 4.6 m log can vary m m. 5. Top minimum diameter, range mm. If you want to, you can change the names of the tree species and the names of the wood types, and save them to the measuring equipment's memory. Detailed information is found in enclosure "3. Names of tree species and wood types".

Instructions for use Epec 4W30 25 If more than 12 preselections are needed, the number of preselections can be increased to 22. This can be done by programming one preselection key as a preselection extender button. When this button is pushed, the extended preselection is enabled. Detailed information is found in enclosure "4. Enabling the extended preselection".

Instructions for use Epec 4W SETTINGS Setting selection square. The following settings are displayed by rotating the programming wheel here. Setting value square. Pressing the Enter key here activates the adjustment of the value. Name of a setting. Possible warning or extra explanation. NOTE! Only the 7 (11 if you have a pump with adjustable volume = a proportional pump) most general adjustments can be adjusted without going to service mode. The service mode is reached by pressing the Cancel key to the bottom for 4 seconds in the main display. The service mode is indicated by the text "SERVICE" on the bottom line of the display. After that, all the parameters can be adjusted. The parameter numbers with K in front of them influence the grapple function. 7.1 Setting of Job Number (Resetting of data) (1) When a new job number is entered, all the old volume calculation and other data is reset. A new job number must be entered, otherwise no resetting is made. The number used can be for instance the purchase contract number, the parcel number or a job number given by the principal. Exiting without damaging the statistics is done by pressing Cancel. Job number can be a number between Feed Method (2) The feed method is the same setting for all tree species. Selected method can be manual, automatic or continuous feed. When manual feed is in force, the tree can be fed only with the feed keys, and the feed stops at the selected length. When automatic feed is in force, the feed starts automatically when pressing one of the preselection keys on the PS. When continuous feed is in force, the feed starts automatically also after crosscut sawing (not after felling sawing) to the same preselected length as the previous piece.

Instructions for use Epec 4W30 27 The feed method is selected as follows: 1. Press Enter and adjust the desired value with the programming wheel. 2. Accept adjustment with Enter or leave previous value in force with Cancel. The values of the feed methods are: 0 = manual feed 1 = automatic feed (feed by preselection) 2 = continuous feed 7.3 Saw Max Pulses (3) Parameter is used to set the maximum amount of pulses coming from the saw position indicator. If the saw does not saw big trees sufficiently, this parameter should be increased. Setting range NOTE! When you have changed the value you must then open and close the grapple. The new value becomes valid after doing this. 7.4 Saw Min Pulses (4) Parameter is used to set how much pulses there must at least come from the saw, before the saw returns into the casing. There must always come at least this amount of pulses from the saw. If the saw does not saw small trees sufficiently, this parameter should be increased. Setting range NOTE! When you have changed the value you must then open and close the grapple. The new value becomes valid after doing this. 7.5 Basic Flow (K5) This is used to adjust the output of the hydraulic pump during different motions. Such motions are for instance grapple open and grapple closed, tilt up and turn left and right. Demands a proportional pump. Setting range %

Instructions for use Epec 4W Sawing Output (K6) This is used to adjust the pump output during sawing. If the output is too small, sawing is slow or does not succeed. If the output is too high, the motor is strongly loaded. Demands a proportional pump. Setting range % 7.7 Low Speed Rate (K7) The minimum rate setting is used to set a suitable low speed feed rate (so right length can be found fast). If a pump with adjustable volume and a proportional valve are used, this setting controls directly the pump output when low speed is used. Demands a proportional pump. Setting range % 7.8 Feed Rate (K8) This parameter is used to set a suitable pump angle / output during the feed, i.e. the pump output can be limited. If the output is too small, the feed is slow. Feed rate should be adjusted first to a lower value and then it should be increased, until the speed does not increase any more. The machine must have reached running temperature. Demands a proportional pump. Setting range % 7.9 Overrunning Method (9) Overrunning means feed past the selected length and then reversing to the selected length. Overrunning can be used for example in delimbing. The overrunning method is set as follows: 1. Press Enter. Then the shading is transferred to the value. 2. Rotate the programming wheel until you get the desired value. 3. Press Enter, if you accept the change, or Cancel, if you do not want to make the change. 0 = overrunning not in use, 1 = overrunning in use.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Transfer of the Diameter Curve (Thin end and thick end) (10 11) The diameter curve can be inclined upwards or downwards at the minimum end and at the maximum end. This inclination is necessary, when a check of the volume measurement has revealed a deviation. Detailed information is found in enclosure "2. Diameter calibration". Inclining range is between -127 and Setting of Date and Time (12 15) Date and time are set as follows: 1. Select the setting you want to change: year, month, day or time. 2. Press Enter and adjust the desired value with the programming wheel. 3. Accept adjustment with Enter or leave previous value in force with Cancel Advance Distance of the Diameter Measurement (16) The advance distance of the diameter measurement is the distance of the diameter measurement position from the saw position. This information is necessary for the volume calculation and for stopping at the diameter limits. Setting range cm. NOTE! Measuring equipment displays the diameter of the sawing position Language (17) This parameter is used to set the language used: Fin = Finnish, S = Swedish, Gb = English, Deu = German Diameter in Use (18) Setting is used to operate the measuring equipment without volume calculation and diameter. 0 = not in use, 1 = in use.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Overrunning Distance (19) The overrunning distance is the same for all tree species. If the overrunning method is not 0, this setting has an influence. Setting range cm. NOTE! The overrunning distance is always at least 2 x the expected braking distance when reversing, if an overrunning method has been selected. The overrunning cannot be eliminated by setting an overrunning distance of 0, but the overrunning method 0 (no overrunning) must be selected Number of Trials in Automatic Feed (Seeking the measure) (20) By automatic feed, measuring equipment selects the feed method (fast speed, low speed, search pulses). If the desired length is not reached directly, measuring equipment tries again based on a new distance, with a new feed method, to find the length as many times as the number of trials indicates. If the feed has got completely stuck, it should be interrupted with the manual feed key. The number of length searching trials can be set. A suitable number is appr. 10. Setting range Expected Braking Distances (21 25) Measuring equipment checks the real braking distance after each stop and corrects the expected braking distance based on this new information. Thus, the expected braking distance is automatically set to the correct value. The braking distance is the distance that the tree moves after the feed valves are not more open. The largest single correction of the expected braking distance (setting 21, range mm) can be limited by setting the single correction to zero. Then the measuring equipment will not correct the expected braking distances, but the set values remain. This is necessary for instance when handling difficult trees, since in such situations the automatic system has difficulties to learn the expected braking distance. The expected braking distances can be pre-set separately for different feed methods.

Instructions for use Epec 4W30 31 The feed methods are: 1. Fast forward (22, range mm). 2. Slow forward (23, range mm). 3. Fast backward (24, range mm). 4. Slow backward (25, range mm). NOTE! Each feed method will be used, if the distance is more than 2 x the braking distance of this feed. If for instance the braking distance of fast feed is 200 mm, the tree is fed with this feed method, if the distance to the desired length is more than 400 mm, otherwise the tree is fed with a slow feed method. When taking the equipment into use or if the expected braking distances for some reason have changed so that it seems difficult to run to the correct length, the system has to learn the new settings in the following way: 1. Give the expected braking distances the following values: Fast forward = 200 mm Slow forward = 20 mm (Low speed) Fast backward = 150 mm Slow backward = 15 mm (Low speed) 2. Select overrunning method 0 (no overrunning). 3. Set a small crosscutting tolerance (for instance 10 mm). 4. Set the number of trials (setting 20) as high as necessary (for instance 100). 5. Select feed method (2) for automatic feed (value 1). 6. Make the low speed feeding pulse (K38) as small as possible (for instance 10). If proportional pump is in use, set the low speed (K7) small (for example 10 30). 7. Increase the number of revolutions to the level used in normal tree handling. 8. Take a readily delimbed tree into the grapple and saw a disk at the butt end. 9. Press one of the preselection lengths on PS (for instance 4.60 m), and the harvester will search for that length. 10. Press another length on PS (for instance 4.30 m), and the harvester searches for that length. 11. Repeat items 9 and 10, i.e. run the tree back and front several times, until the right length is always found rapidly. 12. Set the values that were changed in items 3 6 above to the normal values again, i.e. set them back to the original values.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Statistics (26) This setting indicates whether the pieces are to be recorded according to the average diameter or the top diameter in the statistics. 0 = top diameter, 1 = average diameter. NOTE! If this setting is changed, the statistics should be emptied in order to get all pieces recorded in the same way Diameter Limit (27) This setting is used to determine whether the diameter limit concerns the diameter at the centre of the piece or at the top. 0 = top, 1 = centre Preselection Extender Button (28) The programming of a certain preselection key to a preselection extender button. Detailed information is found in enclosure "4. Enabling the extended preselection" Factory Settings (29) Not necessary in normal use. Locked if the text "Lock" is displayed (factory settings cannot be set). The factory settings set the preselections and program the preselection keys and set part of the special settings. After the factory settings the parameter values must be checked and corrected. Detailed information is found in enclosure "1. Factory settings".

Instructions for use Epec 4W Butt End Reverse (30) Setting of the butt end reverse distance. The butt end reverse is used when a new tree is taken into the grapple. When a tree is in the grapple, part of the butt end of a tree leaves unreachable to the knives, so reverse can be used to delimb this part of a tree. The butt end reverse is in use when automatic feed (feed by preselection) is selected. The reverse can be interrupted by pressing the keys "Feed forward" or "Feed backward". The butt end reverse is carried out after the felling sawing and during the handling of the tree lying on the ground (i.e. when the grapple has been fully opened). Setting range cm Trunk Counter (31) Setting indicates whether the trunk counter is in use or is not in use. The trunk counter is related to preselections. The trunk is added to that preselection, which is active when the first sawing is carried out. Trunks statisticated to the preselections are displayed in the "Pieces" printout. If a printer is not in use, the number of trunks are displayed in the printout window. 0 = not in use, 1 = in use Length of Opening Pulse (K32) The opening pulse is used for setting the duration of the opening control of the delimbing knives at the beginning of the feed. The motor is loaded, if the pulse is too short. The length will not be accurate, if the pulse is too long. Setting range 0 0,3 sec Saw Delay (K33) The setting of the saw delay delays the motion of the sawbar out of the casing after the saw motor has started. Setting range 0 3 seconds.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Feed Delays (K34) The setting is used to set a time delay between different functions during the feed, thus making the different functions to run smoothly. When the feed starts, the proceeding is as follows: 1. Pump 1 on 2. Feed delay 3. Feed 1 on 4. Feed delay 5. Feed 2 on 6. Feed delay 7. Pump 2 on Setting range 0 3 seconds Pump Release Delay (K35) The setting is used to set the time that the pump is on after the other outputs have been switched off. Setting range 0 3 seconds Proportional Pump in Use (K36) This is used to inform the equipment, whether a proportional pump is in use. If no proportional pump is in use, the settings of the pump angle have no influence and the parameters K5 - K8 are not visible. 0 = not in use, 1 = in use Length of Search Pulse (K37) Setting of the length of the search pulse. Is automatically regulated to get the tree to move 2 cm with one pulse. Because of the automatic regulation this value should not be adjusted manually when the machine is searching with search pulses. The suitable pre-set value is 10.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Low Speed Feeding Pulse (K38) Setting of the low speed feeding pulse. No influence, if a proportional pump is in use. Is automatically regulated to get the tree to move 2 cm with one pulse. Because of the automatic regulation this value should not be adjusted when the machine is searching with low speed. The suitable pre-set value is Slip Prevention (K39) This time is used to regulate how long the feed outputs are kept on, if there comes no length pulses. Zero indicates that slip prevention is not in use. The setting range is seconds. If the value is too small, the feed will not work, since the machine thinks too early that the feed rollers slip Urea Feeding Time (K41) Setting the length of the pulse which opens the grapple s urea valve. The setting range is 0 1 seconds Urea Delay (K42) Setting the number of pulses coming from the saw position indicator before the opening pulse is controlled to the urea valve. Setting is used to accurate the urea feed starting position. The setting range is Reverse Pumps (K44) The setting of how many pumps are used in reversing. It is possible to use one or two pumps in reversing. The reversing is faster and more efficient when two pumps are in use. If two pumps are in use, the second pump goes on after the valve Feed backward 2 is controlled to open. The setting range is 1 2.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Tilt Down (K46) The setting of whether the tilt down function is carried out manually or automatically, after the felling sawing. If the automatic tilt down is valid, then the tilt is lowered always after the felling sawing. If the manual tilt down is valid, then the tilt is not lowered until the key "Tilt down" is pressed. 0 = manual tilt down, 1 = automatic tilt down Feed Roller Delay (K47) When closing the grapple, the delimbing knives and the back knife are closed first. After that, the feed rollers are closed. With this setting is set time delay between the closing of the delimbing knives and the closing of the feed rollers. Tree will not be placed properly to the grapple, if the feed roller delay is too short. The setting range is 0 0,5 seconds Selection of Measurement System (48) Selection of the measurement system which is used in the measuring equipment. The metric system s units are millimetre, centimetre and metre. The imperial system s units are inch and foot. When using the imperial system, length is given in feet and inches. Diameter is given in inches and 1/16 inches. Cubics are given in Cunits. Also the preselection data, the data of the printout window, and the Pieces printout is displayed in imperial units. Measuring equipment converts the units as follows: 10 millimetres = 1 centimetre 100 centimetres = 1 metre 1 inch = 25,4 millimetres 1 foot = 305 millimetres 12 inches = 1 foot 1 Cunit = 100 cubic feet 1 cubic metre = 0,353 Cunit 0 = metric system in use, 1 = imperial system in use Tilt Down During Feed (K49) With this setting is selected, whether the grapple is floating or controlled downwards during the feed forward operation. 0 = grapple floating, 1 = tilt down during feed.

Instructions for use Epec 4W Minimum Feed Rate (K50) Setting of the slowest possible feed rate. If the value for minimum feed rate is too high, the feeding to the correct length is carried out too fast (tree is fed past the correct length). If the value for minimum feed rate is too low, the feeding to the correct length is carried out too slow (tree stops before the correct length is reached). Adjust the value first so small, that tree is not moving. Then, increase the value until tree is moving slowly (both forward and backward). The setting range is ma Maximum Feed Rate (K51) Setting of the fastest possible feed rate. First, adjust the value small. Then, increase the value until the feed doesn't grow any more. The setting range is ma Saw Oiling (K52, K53) During sawing, the saw is oiled by using the oil pump. Oiling is carried out by setting the oil pump on and off in turns. The oiling on time is set on setting K53, and the oiling off time is set on setting K52. The setting range for both on time and off time is 0 10 seconds.

Instructions for use Epec 4W CALIBRATIONS / TESTS This display is reached by pressing the Enter key when the frame is here Test selection keys behind which the test displays are found (detailed information is given in section "10. Diagnostics") Length calibration button Diameter calibration button 8.1 Length Calibration When calibrating the length, feed the tree a suitable distance, measure the distance accurately and give measuring equipment this information. Then measuring equipment calculates the correlation between the number of pulses and the length. The length calibration proceeds as follows: 1. Make a sawing. Then the running length is reset. 2. Feed the tree an arbitrary distance (long enough, for instance 5 meters). 3. Measure the fed length accurately. 4. Go from the upper menu to the Test/calibration display and select "Length calibration" by rotating the programming wheel and press Enter. 5. Now rotate the programming wheel until the measured length is displayed and press Enter. Length reading. Length is calibrated by rotating the programming wheel until the displayed length reading is the same as the measured length. The length calibration factor is the pulse length expressed in thousandth mm. Value can be changed by rotating the programming wheel means that the length sensor transmits 1 pulse with intervals of 1 cm. NOTE! The most accurate result is achieved by measuring a larger lot of finished pieces and calculating their average length deviation.
