10/29/2014 GRA 3512 Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms % % % % 5 1 5% List at least 3 things you like BEST about this class. * Artistic freedom is limitless * Hands on work with the press is fun * Very laid back atmosphere nn the pace the structure the format I enjoy the cozy atmosphere of the class, how accessible the instructor is during class, and the instruction style. The amount of time we get for projects Plenty attempts on the quizzes How the lectures go along with the material I like that the assignments are step by step instructions. I like that quiz's go alone with the chapters. I like that the lessons go along with the chapters. I can go at my own pace, as long as I get the assignment done by the end of the week. I can reattempt a quiz if I do poorly the first time. Hope is the bomb. 1. The amount of time we have to complete assignments 2. People are willing to help 3. The pace of the class * Laid back atmosphere *Against the Clock books have always been a good way to learn the basics of the Adobe software, in my opinion *Very cool subject 1.One day is a lecture with lab and the other is a full lab 2.Plenty of time to complete assignments 3.quizzes aren't too hard Not much pressure, Assignments are easy, You learn as you go I like that there are teaching assistants to help and answer questions, the relaxed atmosphere, and the system of everyone going at their own pace. I also like that there is plenty of time to get each assignment done. One on one assistance Helpful information The layout 1.) I like the concepts we are learning 2.) I like the step by step projects 3.) I like the challenge of the new material There's a lot of people to help you, if you need it Only 1 day of lecture per lesson If you get your work finished you don't have to come for lab Class time to work on assignments and finish what I need to during class I get teacher 2/5

10/29/2014 GRA 3512 Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms help and teacher assistants help during class The book is very easy to follow along 1. Very helpful instructors 2. Clear assignment goals 3. Solid course load The Adobe book Meeting in class in case help is needed Having TAs available Flexibility Access to help Self Paced 1. Working with others to learn 2. Relaxed environment 3. Lectures relate to assignments List at least 3 things you like LEAST about this class. nn Sometimes the portfolio builders are tough How long the projects are N/A *Not enough time working with the machinery to grasp and remember information *Disorganized schedule started out okay at first, then it seemed like most didn't know what they were supposed to do * Group work can be annoying, although I will admit it is a necessary evil The lectures/slides are difficult to follow sometimes because I find it easier to learn hands on. The Portfolio Builders are hard to do without assistance. 1.) The final projects aren't appealing or up to par to match today's design world 2.) Wish I had to know more concepts 3.) Wish there were applications in the projects involving photoshop and muse 1. Usually I don't know how to begin each project once I have opened the files in Dreamweaver 2. I wish there was an instructions for the portfolio builders as well 3. I don't really like sitting in front of a computer for 2 hours The portfolio builder projects do not supply enough instructions. The assignments do not show you how to build a website from scratch. Need assignments that allow you to create personal website. *Dreamweaver is a program that you can't just jump into and start making websites. I've been using Dreamweaver and doing web design through other programs and by hand, so I don't have this problem, but I think complete beginners might need to learn more about how the web works before you jump into the projects immediately *Focusing solely on using Dreamweaver While Dreamweaver is a great program, we should learn how to use Adobe Muse and how you can alter code even in TextEdit *Portfolio projects can be challenging, especially when you have to do everything from scratch, like finding new images suitable for the site, recreating the CSS, etc. I do not like how quickly time seems to move while I am working. Also, I don't feel like there are enough lectures and they seem to move fairly quickly. 1. I can get burned out on the projects That's really it the technical drudgery specific random things to memorize time consuming although that's cancelled out by the fact that it's class time anyways Not having dreamweaver on my own computer The portfolio builder assignments aren't very interesting That's all I got. 3/5

10/29/2014 GRA 3512 Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms Sometimes the book isn't clear enough Not too big on web design If you mess up one thing it could ruin your whole project 1. Sometimes the book is difficult to learn from 2. I feel like the book tells you exactly what to do rather than teaching 3. I feel like I could work on some of the stuff outside of class rather than coming in but I don't want attendance to suffer Web developing is rather difficult HTML coding is hard I struggle on the portfolio builders but I'm learning so that's good Coding can be difficult It's early Lectures can drag on a little long Portfolio Builders Quizzes Feels too easy sometimes (too good to be true) Length of the class Crowded workspace Book is sometimes not clear 1. Not designing own website 2. Dream weaver interface is dated 3. Need to allow focus Dreamweaver sucks. Dreamweaver is dumb. This is not a Muse class. Use this section to provide any other comments about this class: nn I hope I know how to work the program after the class is over! I wish there was a second class available I like the way it works but I'm not sure if I learn best straight from these Against the Clock books. I like the class Everything else is good! I'm learning a lot, and it's helping me out. N/A No additional comments It would be really cool if we could make our own websites for extra credit or as a final project. So far so good Overall great class. Overall I enjoy this class very much Great class and great teacher! Maybe we can have a pre made design to work with in order to give us more time on the press, and then let us create our own designs? Or have more real world applications like making the Food Services labels a class assignment This class isn't so bad. It's much wow actually. I totally mixed up this class and the Intermediate Flexo class. Whoops! There should definitely be an advanced web dev class, where we learn about javascript and j query and all those fun things in addition to HTML and CSS. Wish I wasn't graduating in the spring so I could potentially take that kind of class. 4/5

10/29/2014 GRA 3512 Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms I like the code academy site that was provided to learn html and css. Really enjoy this class Overall, I enjoy this class and I am finding the knowledge I am gaining to be very valuable for me in my professional life. Number of daily responses 5/5

10/29/2014 GRA Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms % % % 4 1 5% 5 0 0% List at least 3 things you like BEST about this class. Learning how to use a new software. Working at a self set pace. Interesting portfolio builder topics. The independence with projects We are creating items we can use in our portfolios for later jobs I am learning great and new InDesign skills Clear instruction, Adequate time, Laid Back atmosphere I love how it's "hands on." I like having the professor available for help but working at our own pace. I like the flexibility and the room for creativity for portfolio builder assignments. I really like the hybrid teaching style. I also like that if you can work through the projects before the due date then the lab time is optional because in a similar course that uses adobe programs, several people are left with work that is much easier for them than others. Its very nice and convenient to not have mandatory attendance when the time in the class will not be allocated to complete the already completed assignments. I enjoy the portfolio builder projects and how they offer a more creative approach opportunity than the tutorials. Having a great deal of lab time to work on projects The guided material for the book assignments Portfolio Builders allow for more creativity do not have to come if completed all assignments, cookbook method, gives opportunity to create your portfolio Hands on learning Pace of Due Dates Modules I like how the pace isn't too fast, but definitely isn't slow, and we can work on our own pace to a certain extent. I also like the projects themselves, they seem like real jobs. Lastly, I really like the teacher and how she keeps class entertaining by relating lectures to how we will use the tools in the work force. autonomy hybrid style using a new type of computer application which I have never used before I like the free time in class to work, that you are there to help, that we can work at our own pace. The pacing that allows you to work at in "At discretion pace" The varied type of works. 2/5

10/29/2014 GRA Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms The student teacher interaction due to a smaller class size (compared to a number of classes I have and are taking). 1. Students are given lots of independence in class to work on projects. 2. We have the opportunity to put our own style and creativity into our projects. 3. Lots of portfolio builder projects which will ultimately benefit us in the long run. Easy tutorials laid back class Fun work Complete things on own time, hands on learning, class time used to complete projects. Good instruction of work Computer focused Allows for effective pacing and working ahead I like the length of the time given for the assignments, it doesn't make the students feel rushed. I also like the ability to retake the quizzes until you can get a 100%. The professor is very helpful and quick to all your questions/ s. Format Independent Work Module results for a sense of accomplishment rather than mindless tasks or practice that don't apply to a project. 1) Easy to follow the book 2) Teacher knows her stuff 3) Always had time to finish projects in class the hybrid style of the class very prompt feedback from professor using an adobe suite application which I have never used any of before professors first hand experience in the industry which she shared List at least 3 things you like LEAST about this class. not being able to read along on the powerpoint during lectures seems not all the text is available not having access to power points having power points read to me professor not sharing more of her experience in the industry (some of the stories you tell are the best part of the lecture) Lecture I learn better when I work on the projects. I feel I like the lecture is repetitive. It's to early for a two hour class I feel like the course is more of an online course 8 am Some tutorials are unnecessary quizzes were semi hard 1. I would like more classes online. *There is not really anything I dislike about this class! Sometimes the book directions are confusing I dont always have learned what is on the quizzes from the project beforehand The portfolio builder projects are sometimes very vague don't get to print anything you make, long lectures, too early in the morning to be creative Honestly the only thing that I do not like about the class is that it's at 8:00 in the morning. The lectures haven't benefited me much for this class and its assignments 8 AM I doesn't hold much relevance to my major I'm not very good with Macs Boring (we follow rules in a book, it doesn't feel like design to me.), I hate InDesign (I'd have so much more fun being able to create in Photoshop and then arrange in InDesign. ) 3/5

10/29/2014 GRA Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms 1) It's at 8am 2) 8am classes dont sit well with me 3) I dont like 8am classes I don't like that this class is only twice a week. I don't like how the software is not provided for students' personal computers (but that isn't our professor's responsibility). I wish we could incorporate other programs as well, although I know there are other classes for the rest of Adobe Creative Suite. There is nothing that I really don't like in this class. If I had to say anything it would be to make the textbook lighter/cheaper to purchase. Tech problems, rare but severe whenever they happen. Low availability of properly formatted InDesign outside of classroom, often in use. Macintosh Computers The fact it's so early in the morning. The "mostly online" feature of the class. The long due dates (gift and a curse) Early, lectures aren't terribly information because you learn everything from the book, lack of some fonts that the book uses I dont like that you dont do hands on examples of how to work things in class. thats about it. Class starts at 8 a.m. Having no knowledge about the software in the beginning was frustrating. t Taking attendance. being read the lectures not having access to the lecture literature 8 am I would prefer the instructional text from ATC was setup differently; in a way that didn't simply do it for you by telling you literally what to do like a tutorial does. Issues with uploading to ASU learn (maybe self inflicted). I didn't really like that there wasn't any chance to create something tangible to take away from the course for myself. For example in another course, upon completion I had collected a shirt, mug, calendar, etc. all which I designed on adobe programs then assembled for myself which I was able to add my own creative ideas to. Use this section to provide any other comments about this class: need advice/criticism on if your project would be successful in the real world Very helpful and informative class. I loved the autonomy the professor gives the students. The hybrid style of class is great! I would like to see a chance to maybe, or not earn extra credit with an assignment that allowed more creativity and self reward through the process and completion. Over all I really enjoy this class. I took the other intro class as well and learned I liked InDesign. This allows me to use it more and get to know the program. No other comment to be made. None n/a I am definitely enjoying this class as a whole! Thank you! 4/5

10/29/2014 GRA Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms Feeling more comfortable with InDesign with each passing week. I enjoy the step by step module before completing the portfolio builder. Professor Carroll is very hands on and available for all of her students. Out of all the design classes I have taken at Appalachian, I have learned the most in this class. I love this class! none I really enjoy this class and the freedom we have in it, I just feel that I could use a little more work with understanding master pages and placeholder images. I absolutely love this class. I am so glad I chose my minor, because working with this program and this area are exactly what I want to do. This course is helping me to navigate my way through a program that I will definitely be using in the future. I am really glad Hope Carroll is teaching this class. She is by far one of my favorite GAIT major professors. I just wish it wasn't limited to InDesign. To me, InDesign is a layout software not a content creation software. I could produce much better results in a different program, but working with InDesign feels like trying to draw the Mona Lisa in MS Paint. I have enjoyed learning about InDesign and I feel like I have learned a great deal! It has benefited me in some of my other design classes It is generally good, but working with imaging programs often provokes severe frustration when problems occur without clear solutions. This is not unique to InDesign, but is certainly present within it. im learning a lot and you always provide a lot of help in class I really enjoy the autonomy that is given in this class. The ability to work more or less at your own pace allows the student to have more control over his/her learning. The rope is given to either have a little freedom or to hang yourself. I get a kick out of a professor openly giving that responsibility to the students. Number of daily responses 5/5

10/29/2014 GRA Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms % % % % 5 1 5% List at least 3 things you like BEST about this class. I love the projects in which we need to figure things out on our own. Following the book is challenging, but helps me retain a lot. The assignments are difficult, but fun. 1. Learning approach with textbook 2. Hands on class time 3. Online Class Part 1) The amount of time we have to work on our projects in class 2) The teacher makes herself and her assistants available to help with any questions or problems on the projects 3) Work load is reasonable and organized Working at own pace Turorials from the book Good classroom atmosphere the help given by the teacher. the teacher assistants. plenty of time to complete assignments. freedom flexible teacher online class hours It is mostly just guided practice by the textbook. It is increasing my design and computer skills. It requires minimal studying. I like that we determine how and when we want to spend time with assignments. I like that there is some creative freedom. I like that we're doing assignments that are mildly applicable to a job field. 1. The creative aspect of the portfolio builders projects. 2. Thursdays as lab time, since 2014 version is not in the library. 3. Can take quizzes more than once hands on learning, everything is explained thoroughly, always responds to s ability to learn on your own time ease in asking questions in class in depth classwork The professor going at your own pace The material Step by step instructions for the assignments from the book, having lab assistants helping, and making your own creative posters. Independent learning format Opportunities for creativity Good help Learning this software Working at your own pace Personal help Lab Time to complete assignments Length of class to finish assignments Familiarizing with Adobe InDesign The class has a laid back atmosphere while still having structure and influences learning. I like the hybrid course structure that allows me to do work where I want to and at my own 2/5

10/29/2014 GRA Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms pace. The teacher has mercy for us students who sometimes forget deadlines or assignments. Schedule of work Having help in class when we need it free time to work on projects freedom to work as I please, computer set up, helpful teacher and peers List at least 3 things you like LEAST about this class. Adobe InDesign isn't free outside of class Some assignments are extremely longer than others lectures are a bit complicated to follow, use of information is limited, new mac users are lost from the beginning The lectures prior to the assignments, it is hard to know what you are talking about. The book isn't always clear. Some assignments are hard. Cookie cutter assignments Indesign glitches Zombified class during lectures Material can get extremely intricate and confusing allowing you to get lost and frustrated very quickly and easily 1. Hard to concentrate due to a lot of talking. 2. More hands on lectures 3. The step by step projects aren't interesting I think it would help during lectures to have some sort of "work along" with the lecture. so that the teacher can more effectively demonstrate how to work through certain issues and the students can more effectively understand as well as maintain engagement in the lecture. The software I will most likely never use this again The tests and quiz formats(question wording) the two hour session twice a week is too much time. I'd much rather meet for about 30 min and do all the work at home. the work is tedious and time consuming. Exercises are somewhat dull. 1. Sometimes book does not exactly work with the indd resources available 2. Nothing else online, self teaching. following steps out of a book feels like busy work, and makes it hard to learn. online testing has made me miss quizzes and tests without knowing it. I can't stand following tedious directions for hours on end with no human guidance. The book is relied on more than knowledge or experience. This class is about learning how to follow directions and not about using your brain to think. the text: too wordy/precise the text: sometimes it can become confusing quizzes: sometimes very specific info that is difficult to locate within the large book. Comp labs arent open to work outside of class on the mac computers with CC 2014 software is expensive even though i find it useful don't have software we need in the library 3/5

10/29/2014 GRA Midterm Course Evaluation - Google Forms THE BOOKWORK IS TORTUREEEEEE thats it really lots of projects due every week Project Builders seem redundant Powerpoints are nice, but not that important Don't know why it's required for my major When the program didnt work Sometimes I wish it were a completely online class just for convenience reasons. (I honestly can't think of anything else + criticism is not my forte.) Use this section to provide any other comments about this class: thank you I've enjoyed the class The textbook is pretty easy to follow step by step Overall good class that allows wiggle room for mistakes, is laid back without forfeiting structure, and provides an enjoyable learning environment. The laidback vibe the teachers has sets up a good learning enviornment More creativity based projects Overall, great class. Everyone is helpful and the tutorials are informative and easy to follow. Good class, but engaging the students with more creative assignments would help with learning Indesign The teacher is great and makes each class period enjoyable!!! Great class Other than that I thought the class was great! I thought this class was overall really fun and interesting. I also think it taught me a skill i can use in jobs down the line. other comments overall it is pretty simple as long as you do the work Better explanation of portfolio builder projects I really think that you should do the lectures after we have started the assignment. It is hard to picture what you are talking about when we can't see it. Encourage kids to want to use these very useful programs by showing them the capabilities rather than why they should hate them. I would rather have taken online and met once a week. Teacher helped a lot on understanding specifics related to the program Professor smells good 4/5
