The categories which each of these insulins fit in to (1). How the insulins are manufactured to have differing actions (1). The terms used in DAFNE to describe short acting and intermediate / long acting insulins: Quick Acting (QA) and Background Insulin (BI) (1) The function of background insulin is to keep the blood glucose stable when no carbohydrate is eaten (2). How to evaluate and establish their doses of background insulin (2). The factors which may influence an individual s insulin requirement (2). Carbohydrate causes the blood glucose to rise (2). The main function of quick acting insulin is to cover any carbohydrate eaten (2). The amount of quick-acting insulin required to counteract the carbohydrate may be variable depending on the time of day (2). The ratios of quick-acting insulin to CPs used in DAFNE (2). How to evaluate and establish their quick-acting: CP ratios (2). Quick acting insulin is also used to correct blood glucose, above DAFNE targets (2). How long they should wait before their meal when quick-acting insulin has been injected (2). The action profile of the insulins that they are using (onset, peak and duration) (3). The advantages and disadvantages of the different insulin regimens (3). The DAFNE regimen of BI is twice daily: first thing in the morning and last thing at night (on rising and on retiring) (3). Expected Content (needed to make participants aware): The range of insulins available and their actions DAFNE Targets Benefits of keeping a DAFNE diary Essential Content (needed to meet Learning Outcomes): The steps required to ensure safe and effective injection of insulin (4). How to identify which is their quick-acting and which is their background insulin (4). Understand that isophane insulin must be re-suspended before being drawn into the syringe or injected from a pen (4). Insulin is injected into the subcutaneous tissue (4). The effects of injecting insulin into muscle (4). Heat affects the action of insulin (4). Swabbing of the skin is unnecessary (4). The effects of repeatedly injecting into the same area (4). Importance of regularly checking injection sites (4). How insulin absorption is affected when injecting into lumpy areas (4).
