Search for Provost and Vice President For Academic Affairs July 2015
Introduction The University of New Hampshire (UNH) is a comprehensive Carnegie research-high university and the flagship research institution of the University System of New Hampshire. It is one of a handful of universities to hold land, sea, and space grant charters and is the only public research institution in New Hampshire. In keeping with its origins in the Morrill Act, UNH is dedicated to the public good: educating students, discovering new knowledge, and benefitting the citizens of the state, the nation, and, through its commitment to working on global grand challenges, the world. The Position UNH welcomes candidates for Provost who are prepared to help lead the university to new levels of growth and aspiration. UNH has created an environment for creative thinking and entrepreneurship to develop academic and research excellence including advancing its Carnegie research high standing, fostering the interdisciplinary schools and programs such as the recent formation of the Carsey School of Public Policy; shepherding intellectual capital that elevates invention and discovery to the level of innovation, and that changes and impacts the lives of our citizens. In concert with these goals, UNH has updated its strategic plan ( and seeks a dynamic leader with clarity of vision who will enrich our undergraduate and graduate programs and expand our graduate education potential, foster continuing excellence in our faculty and student research and inquiry, and who will help us to fulfill our commitment for vigorous partnerships with the business community. About The University of New Hampshire UNH has three campuses the main campus in Durham, New Hampshire, and campuses in Manchester and Concord, New Hampshire. UNH Manchester offers an array of baccalaureate and professional degrees to both traditional-aged and returning students, and the UNH School of Law in Concord offers the Juris Doctor and LL.M. and Masters degrees. UNH is comprised of: Carsey School of Public Policy; College of Engineering and Physical Sciences; College of Health and Human Services; College of Liberal Arts; College of Life Sciences and Agriculture; Graduate School; Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space; Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics; 2
School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering; University of New Hampshire at Manchester; and, University of New Hampshire School of Law. Within the past year, the Provost led the University in a review of the Strategic Plan; Version 2.0 was released in early 2015 ( All members of the university are actively engaged in the five key aspects of the updated plan, which are: strengthening UNH s reputation; strengthening and diversifying enrollment; deepening research, graduate education and commercialization; advancing a well-trained workforce through STEM education; and completing a successful fundraising campaign. As the state s land grant university, UNH maintains a network of professional Cooperative Extension staff in all ten New Hampshire counties. The University is distinguished by the access of its undergraduate students to research-active faculty, hosting the largest undergraduate research conference (URC) in the country; its graduate programs in a wide array of disciplines; its location in a beautiful and culturally rich part of New England; and a strong sense of responsibility for the public good. UNH s academic excellence is reflected in its faculty endeavors in many areas of considerable renown, including space science, climate change, environmental sciences, marine science and ocean mapping, sociology, American history, intellectual property law, and creative writing, all of which are nationally ranked. UNH s commitment to interdisciplinary research is evidenced in social science, health and exercise sciences, business/economics, sustainability and environmental science, and community/economic development research conducted by its faculty. UNH is committed to expanding STEM education by developing innovative programs for its students, providing pipeline programs for pre-college students, and in-service teacher development. UNH s six-year undergraduate graduation rate is 77% for the Durham campus. Fall 2014 and 2015 brought in some of the largest first-year classes in UNH history. Creating the Foundation for a Distinctive Future for UNH The 10-year strategic plan, The University of New Hampshire in 2020 a blueprint created in 2010 with input from hundreds of faculty, staff, students and community members, now guides the University s success amid the rapidly-growing challenges facing higher education. It has helped shape remarkable achievements in academics, research, and philanthropy and outreach across UNH s campuses. Accomplishments inspired by the original plan include: 3
launch of the School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering; formation of the Carsey School of Public Policy; creation of the UNH School of Law; opening of the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics; expansion of UNH Manchester into the iconic Pandora Mill building; establishment of UNHInnovation for research commercialization resources; and development of global reach through foreign student enrollments, study abroad programs, faculty exchanges, visiting scholars, and arts and cultural programs. The Provost and staff from the Provost s office played pivotal roles in the academic, enrollment, and financial planning for each of these endeavors, including organizing and facilitating of faculty participation, conducting discussions with various stakeholder groups, leading major programmatic initiatives, advising on policy decisions, and presenting program proposals to review groups such as the Faculty Senate and the USNH Board of Trustees. The Provost s Responsibilities The Provost will report to President Mark Huddleston and will lead UNH s academic and research enterprise as well as overseeing a broad array of student services and academic support programs. The Provost will collaborate with President Huddleston and other senior leaders in the University to: recruit, retain, and develop excellent faculty and staff and expand the research enterprise to discover new knowledge and bring the discoveries to the marketplace and the not-for-profit sector for public benefit; nurture an undergraduate and graduate student body drawn from diverse cultures, backgrounds and geographical regions; strengthen UNH s undergraduate programs while supporting promising graduate programs; 4
develop academic programs and capacity that support the university s new enrollment management plan; and engage with stakeholders in New Hampshire and beyond to create a more vibrant economy and sustainable future for the university, its students, alumni, and the state. Opportunities for the New Provost The Provost will play a vital role in advancing UNH s agenda. More specifically, the Provost will have leadership responsibility for five key academic activities: Advancing Interdisciplinary Schools and Programs -- Current models include the School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering, the Carsey School of Public Policy, the Prevention Innovations Program, as well as several interdisciplinary programs (e.g., Analytics, Security Studies, Neuroscience, Justice Studies, Development Policy and Practice, and Natural Resources and Earth Systems Science). The Provost will spearhead initiatives that expand interdisciplinarity in the humanities, social sciences, and physical and life sciences. Creating a Learning-Centered Environment for the 21st Century -- Enriching the academic and intellectual lives of students by making UNH curricula and research more flexible, creative, accessible, and affordable making UNH the University of Choice. The Provost will work with faculty to advance UNH s learning-centered approach to bolster communal learning and critical discussions as part of the student education experience. Enhancing Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity -- Expanding research and creative work in areas of excellence and advancing future research and creative endeavors in areas of promise; promoting civically engaged research that melds teaching, research and outreach; and expanding the range of education and training opportunities for UNH researchers and partners. Leveraging UNH s Intellectual Capital This initiative focuses on bringing UNH researchers, students, businesses and communities together to transform inventions and discoveries into innovations. It also creates processes and services that commercialize UNH intellectual capital. One goal of this initiative is to expand basic and applied research funding through private/public partnerships. Partnering for Life: Expanding and Deepening UNH s Strategic Partnerships The Provost will lead efforts to develop closer relationships with the business community in New Hampshire and New England in order to garner additional support for the 5
University s activities. This will strengthen the bond with the citizens of New Hampshire and alumni in order to continue to earn their support. Qualifications The new Provost will be a creative and courageous leader who can supervise in a shared governance environment, inspire and collaborate with faculty, staff and students, and effectively communicate in multiple settings with multiple constituencies. He/she will have a well-developed and nuanced understanding of key trends in higher education, UNH s competitive position, and necessary changes that will support and strengthen UNH s long-term success. The Provost s dossier will include a strong track record of scholarship, teaching and working with curricula and evidence of a passionate commitment to research, discovery, and application. Experience in public higher education and familiarity working with public stakeholder groups is preferred. He/she will have significant experience of successful senior academic leadership in a research university where his/her responsibilities included recruiting, developing and retaining faculty, leading faculty and staff, planning and achieving multi-year and annual program goals, and managing budgets. Fundraising experience is preferred. The best candidates will have experience operating in a responsibility centered management environment and experience planning and managing budgets to achieve desired goals. Final candidates will be required to complete a background check successfully. Please send applications and nominations to: Nicholas Brill, Jennifer McDonough, and Melissa Trotta, EdD Brill Neumann Associates Boston, MA UNHProvost@brillneumann.com The University seeks excellence through diversity among its administrators, faculty, staff, and students and prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, veteran status, or marital status. Application by members of all underrepresented groups is encouraged. 6
