18 Data, Information and Knowledge Data Raw materials recorded, unformatted symbols; no meaning in and of themselves Information Data that have been formatted, organized, or processed to be useful. Data is transformed into information. Knowledge The ability to understand information, form opinions, and make decisions or prediction based on the information. Explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge. Wisdom Wisdom is the ability to discern and judge which aspects of that knowledge are true, right, lasting, and applicable to your life. It s deeper; knowing the meaning and what it means to your life.

20 Organizing Data - Key Terms and Technology Database: An organized collection of data; i.e.) single table or a collection of related tables Database management systems (DBMS): Software for creating, maintaining, and manipulating data Known as database software

NoSQL (NotOnlySQL) Database (2000s): New ways of storing data. Developed to deal with limitations of SQL databases, used in big data, replication and unstructured data storage, document database.

Big data: Massive amount of data available to today s managers Unstructured, big, and costly to work through conventional databases Made available by new tools for analysis and insight Volume petabyte and larger Velocity generated rapidly Variety Free-form text Different formats of Web server and database log files Streams of data about user responses to page content; graphics, audio, and video files

28 Apache Hadoop (OSS) Distributed file systems, scalable and portable that stores large files in the range of gigabytes to terabytes across multiple machines. Made up of half-dozen separate software pieces and requires the integration of these pieces to work Advantages Flexibility Scalability Cost effectiveness Fault tolerance
