2 White Paper Executive Summary Today s mission-critical database applications feature Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) workloads that demand the highest levels of performance from servers and their associated SAN storage infrastructure. The introduction of multi-processor CPUs coupled with virtualization technologies provide the resources to meet these demanding requirements within Oracle database servers, but compound the demand for high-performance, low-latency, scalable I/O connectivity between servers and SAN storage. It is imperative to deploy a high-performance, scalable, server adapter technology to meet this ever-growing requirement for I/O. The QLogic FabricCache Series 8Gb Fibre Channel Adapter, featuring serverbased caching operation, and the QLogic 2500 Series 8Gb Fibre Channel Adapter, featuring standard Host Bus Adapter operation, provide highperformance, scalable solutions for database environments. To help IT decision makers make the best, most informed adapter choice, QLogic has developed a series of benchmarks showing the performance and scalability of QLogic FabricCache Series 8Gb Fibre Channel Adapters. The benchmarks also show the performance and scalability advantages of the QLogic 2500 Series 8Gb Fibre Channel Adapter over the Emulex 8Gb LightPulse Adapter in a variety of realworld OLTP and OLAP scenarios using SAN-attached Oracle databases. QLogic compared the overall performance of the 8Gb adapters when configured to emulate a real-world SAN with maximum throughput workloads. These tests highlight the advantage delivered by the QLogic Series Adapters and the QLogic 2500 Series Adapters in Oracle environments. Introduction This paper provides performance testing information for two specific QLogic solutions for Oracle database environments: FabricCache Fibre Channel Adapters featuring integrated flash-based caching for application performance acceleration Standard Fibre Channel Adapters featuring high-performance and lowpower requirements for SAN attachment For FabricCache Adapters, QLogic used Oracle s Orion workload tool to test end-to-end server, network, and storage performance operating in an infrastructure that includes a Fibre Channel attached storage array with standard hard disk drives as the target and the QLogic FabricCache Series 8Gb Fibre Channel Adapter as the device under test (DUT). QLogic chose this configuration to characterize the operational performance of the FabricCache Adapter in a real-world environment, where an existing legacy SAN would typically be present. The results provide baseline performance data for the configured environment without caching enabled, and with various levels of caching enabled to provide a performance comparison. Oracle s Orion workload tool enables architects to effectively develop a workload that can mimic and stress a storage array in the same manner as applications designed with an Oracle backend database. The test s selected objectives enable the best understanding of application performance and environmental usage under various user loads with key indicators such as: Transactions Per Second (TPS) IOPS For the testing performed on the standard Fibre Channel Adapters, QLogic also used Oracle s Orion workload tool, but used a solid-state storage system as the target to facilitate a maximum performance environment for the QLogic and Emulex Fibre Channel Adapters as the DUT. Server-Side Storage Acceleration Storage I/O is the primary performance bottleneck for data-intensive applications such as Oracle. Processor and memory performance have grown in-step with Moore s Law that is, getting faster and smaller while storage performance has lagged far behind. Over the past two decades, delivering performance from data storage has become the bane of application administrators, and recent challenges are poised to severely constrain the capabilities of the infrastructure in the face of increasing virtualization, consolidation, and user loads. 3 White Paper A new class of server-side storage acceleration is the latest innovation in the market addressing this performance disparity. The idea is simple: fast, reliable, solid-state flash memory connected to the server brings faster data access to the Oracle server s CPU. Flash memory, in the form of SSD media, is highly available in the market and promises to perform much faster than any rotational disk under typical, small, highly random, enterprise I/O workloads. The QLogic Series Fibre Channel Adapter provides I/O acceleration to storage traffic for Oracle database servers. The QLogic Series Adapter is a PCIe -based I/O device that provides the integrated storage network connectivity, I/O caching technology, integrated SSD, and embedded processing that are required to make SSD management and caching tasks transparent to the host server. The QLogic solution delivers the application performance acceleration benefits of transparent, serverbased cache, without the limitations of solutions that require separate, server-based storage management software and OS filter drivers. As a shared caching resource, QLogic FabricCache Adapters introduce server-based caching for virtualized and clustered environments, such as Oracle Real Applications Clusters (RAC), which up to now have been precluded by the single server captive nature of existing server-based caching solutions. For optimal Oracle database performance, maximized I/O transaction rate and minimized I/O latency indicate a peak-performing Oracle database system. By optimizing these performance values, the platform can support additional workloads, thereby reducing server, management, and overall infrastructure costs. The key benefits of the QLogic Series Adapter identified in this paper are improvements for Oracle server performance that reduce overall costs. Test Setup The test setup (shown in Figure 1) was configured with an Intel Xeon server connected to an HP Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) storage array through the QLogic QLE10000 Adapter and QLogic 5800V/5802V Fibre Channel Switch. Orion runs were executed with SSD cache levels varying in size from zero to 100 percent of the actual database size. See Appendix B for actual configuration information. Test Results: 13 IOPS Performance over Non-Cached Operations QLogic and Emulex 8Gb Standard Fibre Channel Adapter Comparison The tests described in this section of the paper analyzed and compared the I/O performance of QLogic and Emulex 8Gb Fibre Channel Adapters in a representative selection of database-driven workloads, such as the following: An OLTP Workload. OLTP applications are high throughput, insert/ update-intensive. This workload is typical for companies that have large transaction processing applications, such as airline ticketing, large order-entry, and banking applications. An OLAP Workload. The purpose of an OLAP workload is to quickly provide answers to analytical queries that are multidimensional and part of the broader category of business intelligence. OLAP workloads are typically used in relational reporting and data mining. HSG-WP08007 PX Rev. D 03/13 3

4 White Paper To make the benchmarks relevant to today s businesses, QLogic selected the market-leading Oracle Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) running on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2. RDBMS on Windows is a very popular, highly scalable enterprise configuration in wide production use for both workloads described in the previous paragraphs. The tool used for predicting the performance of the Oracle database under load was Orion from Oracle. Testing performance. To test and compare the I/O performance, QLogic used a Texas Memory Systems RamSan -325 solid-state storage subsystem as the target. Solid-state storage dramatically reduces the latency that comes from using disk-based storage. This latency reduction allows for measuring the true capability of the adapter DUT. Test Setup The test setup (Figure 3) consisted of the latest 8Gb adapters from QLogic and Emulex, running on current commercially available drivers and installed in a Intel Nahalem Quad Core (dual socket) server running the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system (OS). The Intel Nahalem server was connected to a RamSan-325 (with 32GB total capacity) through a QLogic 5000 Series Stackable Fibre Channel Switch. Using a solid-state disk removes the latency introduced by a slower disk drive, and provides the performance benchmark expected from next-generation storage arrays. Eight LUNs were created on the RamSan, and each was visible through four different ports. The switch was configured with one initiator to the QLogic 5000 Series Stackable Fibre Channel Switch in a zone with four target RamSan ports. Test Procedure The tests were executed on the configuration in Figure 3 as follows: 1. A QLogic 8Gb single-channel PCI Express to Fibre Channel Adapter (QLE2560) was installed on the test server using the appropriate miniport driver. 2. Eight LUNs were created and mapped to four target ports. 3. The Windows device manager was used to verify that the LUNs were visible. Each LUN was then formatted and assigned a drive letter that could be used by the Orion tool. 4. The Orion commands were executed to simulate OLTP and OLAP workloads. 5. These steps were repeated for the Emulex 8Gb single-channel PCI Express to Fibre Channel Adapter (LPe12000). Test Results The performance of the QLogic adapter and Emulex adapter were tested and measured based on critical parameters as part of OLTP and OLAP application testing. The performance was measured against an increasing load on the adapters determined by the number of outstanding I/O requests. TP Workloads. OLTP is the most common workload in the enterprise, so it provides a good indication of the adapter s scalability in a production setting. Figure 4 shows an up to 106 percent performance advantage of QLogic over Emulex in overall IOPS in the OLTP application environment. 5 White Paper OLAP Workloads. Oracle implements OLAP within an Oracle database environment. The typical applications of OLAP are in business reporting for sales, marketing, Business Performance Management (BPM), budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting, and planning. Figure 5 shows an up to 23 percent performance advantage of QLogic over Emulex, with QLogic supporting higher overall IOPS for Oracle OLAP.
