1 English Classes in a Clothing Factory Pam Pietrowski and Paula Tavers Use This in conjunction with Timeless Fashion: Made in America on pp of the Fashion Issue of The Change Agent. Northern Essex Community College, UNITE HERE, and Southwick LLC joined forces to organize English classes for the employees at Southwick LLC in Haverhill, MA. The classes began in the fall of 2009 and run four afternoons a week, on site at Southwick LLC, a company that makes Brooks Brothers suits. Southwick employs over 300 people from all over the world and who many wanted to take English Classes. Twenty-eight students make up two, level one English classes that are held during the afternoons in the Southwick Cafeteria. During the day, each employee works diligently at one piece of a coat or pants of a Brooks Brother s suit. In the afternoons, the cafeteria is transformed into a classroom with a portable dry erase board, easel. The employees turn in their Here are the Monday/Wednesday students. They all come from Dominican Republic. Here are the students from the Tuesday/Thursday class. They are from the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, and Korea. smocks, needles, and thread for picture dictionaries and English conversation. They have been working hard on improving their interpersonal communication skills and learning how to express themselves more comfortably in their work environment. In addition to conversation skills, grammar is also built into the curriculum by using thematic units such as holidays and workplace vocabulary. On the following pages are some worksheets that these students have been studying. Pam Pietrowski and Paula Travers work for Northern Essex Community College and teach ESOL to Southwick employees who make Brooks Brothers suits.
