3 CLOTHING PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT The Clothing Production is a well-integrated course. Students create and present various designs in the Fashion Drawing class according to a given theme. One design is chosen and the pattern for this design is constructed and completed in the Pattern Construction class. The chosen design is then manufactured in the Clothing Construction class. Therefore a semester time table is followed, enabling the student to complete the qualification in 18 months Registration takes place twice a year, in January and July. QUALIFICATION After successfully completing the N6 course and an 18-month experiential training period, the student can apply for the National Diploma in Clothing Production. ASSESSMENT The pass mark is 40% per subject Students should pass all practical subjects before they can be admitted in the next level External examinations are written at the end of each level, in June and November Practical work is externally moderated 3

4 CURRICULUM CLOTHING PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT N4 N5 N6 - Clothing Construction Theory and Practical - Pattern Construction - Fashion Drawing - Entrepreneurship & Business Development - Clothing Construction Theory and Practical - Pattern Construction - Fashion Drawing - Entrepreneurship & Business Development - Clothing Construction Theory and Practical - Pattern Construction - Fashion Drawing - Computer Practice Subject Description (Clothing Production) CLOTHING PRODUCTION THEORY & PRACTICAL Garments are manufactured from patterns that have been Constructed in the Pattern Construction class. Items range from simple tunics, blouses, skirts, trousers, dresses, jackets, coats, lingerie, evening wear, wedding dresses and casual men s wear. PATTERN CONSTRUCTION Basic blocks are constructed and then used for manipulating pattern into desired designs. A standard size 13 is used and all garments are made up accordingly. FASHION DRAWING Students are given themes according to which they present the following design boards: development board, production sketches, illustrations and accessory boards. FASHION ORGANIZATION An overall view of how a factory is run and the different machinery used are covered in this subject. ENTREPRENEURSHIP & BUSINESS MANAGEMENT (N4) The nature of a small business and entrepreneurship are studied in detail. 4

5 HOSPITALITY DEPARTMENT ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS N4: Grade 12 Learner must have passed at least 1 of the following subjects Consumer Studies / Home Economics Hotelkeeping and Catering DURATION N4: 6 Months ( 1 Semester) N5: 6 Months ( 2nd Semester) N6: 6 Months ( 3rd Semester) WHERE TO STUDY THIS COURSE Braamfontein Site QUALIFICATION On Completion of N6 Learner goes for in-service Training For 18 Months then on Completion a student is qualified for a Nationl Diploma. REGISTRATION Takes Place Twice a Year January & July ASSESSMENT Pass Mark is 40% Per Subject Examinations are written at the end of each semester in June & November. Course Focuses on both Hospitality Theory and practicals. 6 POPULAR MUSIC DEPARTMENT The Popular Music Department has over the years produced a top notch musicians, some of whom have gone on to become household names in the South African music industry. We have 3 professional recording studios; a programming room equipped with computers loaded with the latest music soft wares; 2 ensemble rooms that are equipped with the set of musical instruments; and a PA system; a DJ laboratory equipped with turn tables and a CDJ s; Computer laboratory equipped with computers and basic soft-ware; an Audio-visual centre equipped with a television set and a DVD sound system as well as class rooms.. The Music Department boasts Lecturers who are themselves accomplished musicians, exposing our learners to hands on music industry knowledge POPULAR MUSIC COURSES: TWO SPECIALISATION AREAS Music Performance: For aspiring performers(instrument player & singers), Dj s and music composers. The ability to communicate well in English is an essential prerequisite for this course. The subject also covers the study of South African hotel structures. 10

11 ART & DESIGN DEPARTMENT The field of Art and Design holds a special place, because it is one of the best examples of combining inputs from arts, culture, science and technology in one end result - Ms Bridget Mabandla, former Deputy Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology. An important difference between a career in art and design and a more conventional one is that it is very difficult to predict the development of the career of an artist or a designer. There is, however, a rapidly growing awareness of Career opportunities are steadily increasing in number and variety. Art and Design is not only an interesting career, but it also contributes tremendously towards the economy and the well being of people in general. ASSESSMENT Pass requirement is 40% per subject Evaluations are cumulative, based on the regular assessment and Moderation throughout the year. Student are required to present a Portfolio of their work and pin up their best work for internal assessment and moderation. External examinations are written at the end of each level in JUNE and NOVEMBER 13

14 ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY You should not be late or absent for any of your classes. An acceptable explanation must be given to your lecturer as soon as possible as to why you were late or absent. If you arrive late, you are expected to apologize and take your seat quietly without disrupting the class. Action will be taken if: You are absent for unacceptable reasons for more than 20% of any term; You are absent for more than three days at once; Your attendance shows a pattern of decline; Your absences show a pattern, e.g. Every Monday morning; You regularly arrive late without good reason. If your attendance and/or punctuality provide cause for concern you will have to follow one of the courses of action outlined below: 1. You and your Lecturer will have a discussion where you will set goals and create an action plan to help you attend more regularly and punctually; 2. Your Student Support Officer will make contact with you to discuss what help you need to improve your attendance and punctuality; 3. If you still fail to meet the required standards of attendance and punctuality then the College may take disciplinary action. 14
