1 Issue 11 February 2006 Prez Sez AGM / Presentation Night Enfield Harriers has had a truly remarkable season. This year we have seen more officials helping out at interclub. Associate membership is at an all time high with many parents and friends of the club supporting us. The Enfield Harriers 45th anniversary dinner attracted 84 past and present members to reminisce past times, present times and the future of the club. Our fundraising has gone through the roof with a current total of $4620 being raised towards the furnishing of the new clubrooms. Finally after many years of working with the council, construction is under way. This building will create a true athletic hub in our region providing the best athletic facilities in the state for Enfield Harriers members. Once again Enfield Harriers has been successful by receiving an Active Clubs grant of $ which immediately went towards the purchase of gym equipment to fully equip the new clubroom gym. The relationship between Enfield Harriers and the Port Adelaide Enfield council has also strengthened, with the council holding an afternoon tea to honour the clubs successes. Members of the committee attended professional sports club management sessions to further understand how to develop the club. Our social scene is slowly being developed through a successful movie night and a washed out X-mas BBQ. The pole vault facilities have been completed thanks to the efforts of Kym. Public coaching sessions have increased with the Winter Sprint Series, Growing for Gold and refugee training sessions being conducted. Enfield Harriers has aligned itself with the Special Olympics athletes who now regularly train at our grounds. This is truly a very impressive lists of achievements for one season and I haven t even mentioned our outstanding athletes and their achievements! Enfield Harriers athletes have competed outstandingly in local competition with 7 different teams qualifying for the interclub finals. A swag of medals were brought home by many different teams in the state relay championships. The State Athletic Championships saw another successful Enfield Harriers performance, with Enfield repeatedly standing on the lofty heights of the podium. Once again state records have been smashed by Enfield Harriers athletes, raising the levels of performance above our competitors. PB s have been surpassed with things flying further, bodies moving faster, higher and longer. Nationally Enfield Harriers has been well represented in both junior and senior meets. Enfield Harriers Master s athletes competed in the Australian Masters games to win more medals than the committee can count! Many of our juniors competed in the All Schools, Pacific school games, National Multievent champs and National Championships to bring home medals around their necks. Our senior athletes competed in the Telstra-A Series and National Championships with Enfield Harriers bringing home the most national medals in SA. Our club also has representation in the Commonwealth Games through Brooke who will also go on to compete in the World cup and the Osaka GP this year. Enfield Harriers is a team of Champions. Enfield Harriers are a Champion Team. Darren Billett As we gear up for the end of the season, we are now preparing for our end of year presentation and AGM. 2 Page 2 Enfield Harriers News WOW! What a senior nationals! The Telstra Selection Trials & 84th Australian Athletic National Championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park from Feb 2-6. It saw great performances by seven Enfield Harriers athletes. This has been the best showing at a senior nationals by Enfield Harriers for years! Darren Billett threw a new PB of 66.32m in the Hammer throw to finish 2nd; winning the silver medal. Unfortunately Darren was 68cm off of the Commonwealth Games qualifying distance and missed out on the team. In the women's Javelin Enfield was represented by Kate Shierlaw and Rebekah Redden. Kate qualified for the final, finishing 10th throwing 43.99m Rebekah threw 41.70m in the qualifying rounds and just missed out on the final. Claire Woods strolled her way to 6th in the 20km race walk; walking the course in a Commonwealth Games B PSG Review Congratulations to Paige Hooper and Meggan O Riley who brought home gold medals from the Pacific School Games. Other Enfield Harriers athletes also competed well with many making semis and finals and returning home with PBs. Based on her performance at these games, Meggan O Riley has been selected in the Australian team to compete at the World School Games which are to be held in Greece in June - July this year. Best of luck Meggan on this exciting chance to continue your budding international athletic career! Sam Giatrakos Clean s Up After a fairly even battle through 9 out of the 10 events in the Decathlon, Sam Giatrakos sprinted away with the Under 20 National Tittle, beating his closest competitor by well over a minute in the final event the 1,500m. Sam went into the last event with a lead of only 15 points, and finished the 2 day event with a score of 6,285; a massive 412 point victory over Western Australian Luke Devenish. Sam won the Under 18 National Decathlon Tittle in December in Canberra after competing in the Pacific School Games in Melbourne and the All Schools in Sydney. The Telstra Selection Trials/National Championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park which is Sam's last interstate meet for this season. Having to travel interstate to find competition and then finding out that the only way to be beaten is to enter the Open events is quickly becoming a reality to Sam. To end a busy season, Sam will front up at the National Under 20 and Under 23 Championships in Adelaide competing in the Long Jump, Hurdles and High Jump; before finally competing in the Decathlon over Easter as a final trial for the IAAF World Junior's in Beijing. Senior Nationals Results qualifying time of 1:37:43. Unfortunately Claire was not selected in the Commonwealth Games Team. Kristy Villis ran the 3k Steeple chase in 10:30.56, sprinting home to finish in 6th place. Leaping Lauren Foote leapt 1.80m in the High Jump to make the final and to finish in 6th position. The standout performance of the meet was by Brooke Billett, who biffed the hammer out to a new PB of 70.72m. This flew right over the Commonwealth Games A qualifying distance and easily won the Gold medal. Brooke is now only 40cm off the Australian record and 73cm off of the Commonwealth Games record. This throw ranks Brooke 2nd in the Commonwealth rankings and it automatically qualified her for the Games. Brooke is a real chance to win the Commonwealth Games Hammer throw (19 March qualifying, 20 March final) and I am sure every Enfield Harriers member will cheer on her successes. Gym Equipment Refurb A big thank you to Kym Miller and Andy Giatrakos who helped Darren to prepare the clubs gym equipment for refurbishment. On Friday December 23 the men stripped off all of the gym equipment to remove all cables, pads and weight stacks to prepare it for sandblasting and painting. It was hot dusty work but someone had to do it :-) The pads will now be cleaned up and any re-upholstering will be done. This will ensure the club will have a top gym when the new club rooms open! Sid Dominates Little A s Multi s Shidharth Narayan (Sid) dominated the Little Athletics Under 14 Boys Multi Event in all events... but the 800m. Sid started throwing the Shot Put 12.67m; well over a metre further than his closest competitor. His 100m was just as stunning with a 12.0 with a good half a second gap on the field. Next came the event where Sid always struggles the 800m. Sid did run a near equal personal best with 2:36.5, but as his strength lies in the power events, he does find endurance to be a big challenge. Next event was hurdles and a Little Athletics State Record by a massive 0.3 of a second. Sid again dominating the rest of the field with a win clear by a whole second running The final event was the Long Jump where Sid was hoping to surpass the state record distance of 6.40m at a Championship Meet. Unfortunately the energy levels seemed to be diminished by the other efforts and still with a credible 5.78m he finished the event with a comfortable 325 point lead. Sid has now been training under coach Kym Miller for just over a year and is starting to show signs of following training partner Sam Giatrakos who has just won both Under 18 and Under 20 National Decathlon Titles in the same season. The benefits are clearly seen in good techniques in all events and are backed up by solid strength development work that is done through winter.

3 Enfield Harriers News Page 3 Fundraising The Goal We are now only $380 from reaching our targeted fundraising goal. I want to reiterate again that this has been a fantastic effort from all Enfield Harriers members. To our total, we can include $250 from another one of John Pearce s bottle drives bringing our fundraising total to $4620. The total raised from bottle drives has now increased to $859. Bottle drives may not be fun and it only has a few helpers; but it is a consistent fundraiser for the club. Thank you to John and his regular crew who run the event. Watch out for chocolate frog sales, Entertainment Books (see below) and other fundraising opportunities for this coming year. If you have an idea for fundraising, please see a committee member. To be eligible for trophy s athletes must have paid their club fees. If you haven t paid yours, see a committee member now! Enfield Harriers Athletic Club Fees: $60 First Family Member, $50 Second Family Member, $40 Each of the rest of Family Members, $40 Country or Little Athletics Member, $35 Second Country or Little Athletic Member, $30 Each of the rest of Country or Little Athletic Members, $25 Associate Member, $00 Officials ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS 2006/2007 The entertainment books are great value and worth while. Last year the books were very popular and raised over $500 for the club. What is the Entertainment Book? The entertainment book is a book full of 2-for-1 coupons and percentage off deals at café s, pubs, restaurants, hotels, leisure places, video hire etc all over Adelaide and South Australia. It has to be seen to realise the full value this feature packed book has. How much does the book cost? Each book sells for $60 and from this, Enfield Harriers receives $12 profit. If each registered athlete sells one book each, the club can easily make upward of $750 to help towards our fundraising goal. These funds will ensures that Enfield Harriers club rooms, grounds and facilities remain at the forefront of athletics in South Australia. Why spend $60 on a voucher book? Because in no time at all you recoup your initial $60 outlay and start saving money. For example, if you go to the cinema you save $14 by using a 2for1 voucher. Fancy a meal out? Use a buy one get one free meal voucher to save $25. By simply going to the movies and eating out twice redeems your $60 outlay. From then on you will be saving yourself money! The books easily sell themselves. Who would Benefit from a book? Everyone! Parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, friends, neighbors, work colleagues etc etc would benefit from buying an Entertainment book. Potential buyers can browse the book and see what fantastic value it holds. The more books sold, the more money the club raises! Everyone goes out for meals, movies or other leisure activities during the year, so buying this book will help you save money. Really, it is the best $60 you could spend and it also makes for a great gift idea for people you know that love to go out. It s up to you... In the past we have tried to encourage and push the entertainment books for sale. This has not worked. Regular supporters of the club are happy to sell the books and without a doubt this pattern will continue this year. As such, if you want to support the club and sell a book, please see Darren or Kym. It is totally up to you. All unsold books need to be kept in A1 condition and they can be returned to the entertainment group at no cost to Enfield Harriers. Clubroom Developments Mid - End April is the scheduled completion date Enfield Harriers has been given by the builders. Gradually the building site now is reflecting the clubrooms. The majority of the steel frame is up. The hammer watching or observation deck is partially completed and it overlooks the tennis courts and oval. The complete 1st floor (level with the track) has been concreted and the general layout of the building is now visible. It certainly is exciting times my friends. Once the building is complete the committee plans to furnish the building and install the gym equipment into...you guessed it; the gym. Watch out for the mid year when we plan to invite all and sundry to the grand opening. Enfield Harriers will truly be the athletic training hub of the state. Century of Athletics in SA Fletcher McEwen has written a book detailing the past century of Athletics in South Australia. Included with the book are two CD's with the top 100 ranked male and female athletes for each event on one and the other packed with photos from the past centenary. Price: $55.00 (inc GST) If you are interested in obtaining a piece of history and to view the Enfield Harriers achievements, contact the ASA office. Jennyfer Flood OAM Congratulations to Jenny Flood for receiving an OAM award for service to a range of sporting organizations for people with a vision impairment. Jenny is an Ex Enfield Harriers Marathon Runner who served the club for many years. Congratulations Jenny!

I am giving competitors the opportunity to choose the weights in throws and the hurdle heights and distances so as to encourage participation (but no world records please). The aim is to include, enjoy and develop a fun athletic experience. To qualify for the finals you simply need to compete 3 different days in the events you wish to contest. It is important that you use the same weight in throws and the same height hurdles each time to qualify yourself into the finals. Finals will be held and medals and trophies awarded by a system of most improved on the Final Days in each event and each event group will have a grand champion for Throws, Jumps and Sprints/Hurdles. Age, gender and correct weight for age divisions will be made if numbers warrant divisions. Event Order: Throws Mornings Afternoons Hammer, Javelin, Discus, Shot Put. If you make the decision to try and compete, I will make every effort to provide safe areas for competition. The Jumps, Sprints and Hurdle events will not be run in heavy rain. Alternative training and or social events may occur in some cases. If you are unsure, please call me to check on the weather and track conditions at Enfield. Kym Miller

5 With some outstanding performances this year it is timely to remind everyone that Enfield Harriers will waiver your club and registration fees if you are an athlete that performs to a high level and helps the club during the year. The criteria for waiving of club fees consists of performance and support components. The athlete must satisfy one of the following performance criteria: Open State Title Holder Enfield Harriers News Page 5 Breaking of a State Record Qualifying for World Juniors WAIVERING CLUB FEES Qualify for an Australian Team (sanctioned by IAAF) such as Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, World Championships etc. The athlete must also have helped the club in the season the performance criteria was met. To receive the wavering of the fees, the athlete must first pay for their registration with ASA. Armed with a registration receipt, the athlete presents the receipt to the committee for consideration and outlines when they have helped the club. At the next committee meeting the committee will review the athlete against the criteria and will reimburse successful athletes of their registration fees. Club fees will also be waived for these athletes. This is a great opportunity and reward for athletes that perform well in the season. It saves the athletes money, but also increases the cost for the club. As mentioned, athletes will only receive this reward if they assist and help out the club. The athlete can help at any of the club events during the year, including the Enfield Host day, presentation night, at a bottle drive, they could organize a fundraising event, help on the committee, help with the newsletter etc etc, the list goes on. Remember, if you support YOUR club, YOUR club will help support you. Enfield Harriers associate memberships are due for renewal in July. (Associate memberships are on a financial calendar year basis.) Anyone who is not a registered athlete or official can be an associate member of Enfield Harriers. Associate membership costs of $20. All associate members have the right to use Enfield Harrier s athletic equipment and they will be sent newsletters to be kept informed about the Enfield Harrier s News. Additionally, associate members will be invited to any social functions and gatherings the club has. Being an associate member is a great way to be involved and to support the club. If you are a parent of a registered ath- 2006/2007 Associate Membership lete, consider becoming an associate member of Enfield Harriers yourself. Past athletes, officials, family and friends of athletes may also like to be involved with the club and becoming an associate member is a fun and enjoyable way to do so. The Lead Up With just two weeks before the Opening Ceremony, I feel like I am on a big merry-go-round. The Commonwealth Games seemed so far away at the beginning of January, but now they have snuck up on us. Well, not really, I have been working towards these championships for 18 months now. Training has been going remarkably well, considering all the hiccups I have had in my personal life - outside of Hammer Throwing. I have been working as a relief teacher in a year 6/7 class and they are really excited about the whole process. Training is in full swing at the moment and wont ease off until 10 days prior to my competition. This year my main focus was to become more consistent with my performances and I think that I have achieved that. Every competition I have had has been in excess of the A Qualifying mark of 65m, the only Australian athlete in any event to reach an A standard every competition. Therefore I am filled with confidence that I am able to go into the circle and throw a decent distance each time. I am really looking forward to this competition as I feel that this time I will really be competing. In the past I have felt like a number, someone to fill in time for the better athletes. Now it is different. I am one of those better athletes and I feel like I will be a main competitor. For once I feel like things are going how they should be. No broken bones or serious injuries!! Is that what that feels like? - wow! One main question people like to focus on is the elusive "GOLD". After the last games where the podium was my main focus, I have learnt that that is the least of my worries. I am going out there to throw big and whatever that has in store for me will be. Beside the hunk of metal, people keep asking about the pressure. I don't feel any. Who is putting pressure on me?? Maybe myself but I think I have been able to overcome that this year round. I have learnt to go out there, have fun and trust myself and my throwing. You just have to Live for the moment! After the Nationals I know what it feels like to be ready and in form; and there is no better feeling. Knowing all the hard work you did during the year and all the sacrifices you made (that others have no idea about) all paid off. This year I feel like a completely different athlete. I am going to go out there and do what I do best... throw far. Knowing that my entire family will be there and some very loyal friends will be extremely exciting and I hope I do them really proud. I would have obviously loved it for Darren to be part of the team with me, but I know, as disappointed as he is, he will be in the stand cheering hard. I have been told by someone very important to me and my throwing to "TAKE NO PRISONERS". No quarter will be asked and none will be given. Cheer me on Enfield!! Brooke Billett 01/03/2006
