1 Digital Healthcare in Scotland Healthcare at your fingertips
2 Scottish Development International Digital Healthcare in Scotland The face of healthcare delivery has changed radically and at its core is a digital and customer revolution. None more marked than the dramatic upsurge in demand from an informed and techsavvy public for products and systems to manage and monitor health or allow access to healthcare services and advice. With demand, of course, comes opportunity. Particularly in swift product and service development to access these lucrative and expanding markets. Unsurprisingly, iphones, tablets and other multi-functional devices already embedded in consumer lifestyles are swiftly adapting to meet digital healthcare needs. Moreover, with health and care systems around the world facing demand, capacity and resource challenges the move towards technology supported redesign is gathering momentum. Scotland is fully positioned to meet this challenge with confidence. In fact, we are already doing so with advanced, intuitive and integrated digital health solutions. In these pages, we want to give a taste of what Scotland can offer and extend an invitation to join us for; Partnering opportunities with Scottish companies already leading in device, product and system development Investment opportunities to engage in a lucrative, innovative market As a nation that punches above its weight in health firsts we know what it takes to drive and develop new markets. For example, our invention of the MRI scanner or the bionic hand. We are renowned for a highly collaborative telehealthcare community drawing together leading academics, policy makers, multinational companies and a globally admired National Healthcare Service. This close knit group is just one of the reasons that Scotland can point to an enviable record of highly profitable businesses, a competitive investment environment and successful investor exits. For those looking to access world class expertise, healthcare specialists and an international reputation to start up or grow, Scotland gives the right answer. Dr. George Crooks OBE MBChB MRCGP Medical Director/Chief Operating Officer for NHS and Director of the Scottish Centre for Telehealth & Telecare

4 Scottish Development International Digital Healthcare in Scotland Market Opportunities The global need for the reconfiguration of healthcare delivery presents vast opportunities for companies ready to take advantage of them. Populations around the world are getting older, are suffering increasingly from non-communicable and chronic diseases (NCD). Increasingly Government agencies and healthcare professionals are crying out for innovative technologies and support mechanisms to help alleviate and reduce these growing issues and financial challenges before the situation gets much worse. 5 Scottish Development International Digital Healthcare in Scotland Scotland - a perfect test bed Cluster of companies engaged in Digital Healthcare in Scotland Over 00 companies have been identified by the Enterprise agencies as being active in digital healthcare across Scotland, complemented by diverse research activity within the research base. A digital healthcare cluster based on a forward thinking and interactive community of pioneers from healthcare, industry and academia that has started to attract interest from international organisations. International expertise and skills in Digital Healthcare sector and Convergent technologies The nature of this highly multi-disciplinary field is reflected in the diversity of the Scottish academic and industry base. Expertise in medical devices, sensors and diagnostics is becoming integrated with health economics, social and consumer psychology together with interests in informatics and communications to produce a dynamic ecosystem. This is complemented by growing interaction between healthcare professionals, academia and industry who increasingly understand the necessity for interaction and collaboration. Market opportunity Scotland has a population of over million people requiring healthcare services in urban, rural and remote environments. It has a growing reputation in digital healthcare, arising from an historical need to deliver services in the face of challenging geography and a long history of innovation. Scotland provides ready access and strong connections to rest of UK and EU markets. Focus on support towards Digital Healthcare Digital healthcare is becoming increasingly important at the Scottish level. The Scottish Assisted Living Advisory Board brings together senior representatives from health, care and enterprise to coordinate activity across Scotland. This body reports into the Life Science Advisory Board, co-chaired by the Scottish Minister for Health and populated by industry, such that public sector and private sector have a shared understanding of this increasingly important field. Perfect test bed environment NHS is the national health board tasked to deliver healthcare using digital technology and works closely with other health boards and care organisations to promote the adoption of ICT-enabled healthcare across Scotland. NHS has been appointed by the Scottish Government to lead the Scottish element of the million (m) UK-wide DALLAS program (Delivering Assisted Living and Life Styles at Scale) which involves a consortium of public sector bodies and industry to deliver novel digital healthcare services from 0 onwards. A 0m fund supports the Scottish element of the DALLAS project which will deliver at scale digital healthcare to communities across Scotland (Western Isles, Highland, Moray, Forth valley and Lothian). Access to advanced patient database and facilities Remote areas with advanced demographic profiles and inner city communities with low life expectancies provide challenge but also opportunity to those seeking to develop novel tools for service delivery and self management. Leading organisations such as the Moray Community Health Partnership are working with communities to provide a living test bed to accelerate the development of much needed solutions. Financial and training support Scotland can provide support to companies looking to invest in Scotland as well as those already located there in terms of financial support to grow their companies as well as training support for ongoing up-skilling of their staff. Quality of Life Scotland s famous culture and lifestyle help companies recruit high quality staff from across the world. This unusually diverse combination of expertise and collaboration, coupled with rapidly increasing levels of activity in the sector, dictates that Scotland is at the leading edge of innovation in digital healthcare and a perfect place in which to locate.
