1 FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK Volume pp Rare saproxylic click beetles in Hungary: distributional records and notes on life history (Coleoptera: Elateridae) T. NÉMETH & O. MERKL Hungarian Natural History Museum, H-1088 Budapest, Baross u. 13, Hungary. s: Locality data of 30 rare saproxylic species of Hungarian Elateridae are presented, with notes on their life history. Localities are depicted on UTM grid maps. Lacon lepidopterus (PANZER, 1801) is recorded from Hungary for the first time. With 60 figures. Coleoptera, Elateridae, saproxylic, Hungary, localities. INTRODUCTION This paper intends to publish locality data of 30 rare saproxylic species of Elateridae from Hungary. In the last two decades saproxylic click beetles became a popular group among Hungarian coleopterists. The increased collecting activity has resulted in a considerable extension of known Hungarian distributional ranges of various species which were once considered very rare here. A rare species, for the purpose of this account, is defined as a species with not more than 40 markings (of any kind) in the UTM squares on its distributional map. Several important faunistic contributions to the Hungarian click beetles were published in the 20 th century and in the 2000s. Most of them are listed in the references section of MERKL & MERTLIK (2005), this work includes a check-list of the Hungarian elaterids with first records for a number of species. In the present paper, references are not cited for the locality

2 96 T. Németh & O. Merkl records, because the original specimens on which the records were based were seen by the authors or by J. MERTLIK (Opatovice nad Labem, Czech Republic) (the only exception is Crepidophorus mutilatus). The data of Ampedus cardinalis, Ampedus hjorti, Hypoganus inunctus and Limoniscus violaceus from Heves county were already published by KOVÁCS et al. (2009). MATERIAL AND DATA PRESENTATION This paper is based on click beetle materials housed in the following collections: CAK = private collection of ATTILA KOTÁN, Budapest, Hungary; CBS = private collection of BÉLA SZELENCZEY, Gyõr, Hungary; CDS = private collection of DEZSÕSZALÓKI, Budapest, Hungary; CIR = private collection of ISTVÁN ROZNER, Budapest, Hungary; CJM = private collection of JOSEF MERTLIK, Opatovice nad Labem, Czech Republic; CKS = private collection of KÁLMÁN SZÉKELY, Gyõr, Budapest, Hungary; CLN = private collection of LÁSZLÓ NÁDAI, Budapest, Hungary; CLS = private collection of LUKÁŠ SEKERKA, Liberec, Czech Republic; CTN = private collection of TAMÁS NÉMETH, Budapest, Hungary; HNHM = Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest, Hungary (curator: OTTÓ MERKL); JPM = Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs, Hungary (curator: TIBOR KISBENEDEK); KFM = Kazinczy Ferenc Museum, Sátoraljaújhely, Hungary (curator: GÁBOR HEGYESSY); LMB = Lepkemúzeum, Budapest (curator: GYÖRGY JUHÁSZ); MMG = Mátra Museum, Gyöngyös (curator: TIBOR KOVÁCS); NHMZ = Natural History Museum of Bakony Mountains, Zirc, Hungary (curator: CSABA KUTASI); SMS = Savaria Museum, Szombathely, Hungary (curator: KÁROLY VIG). The species name is followed by the localities by county in alphabetical order, information on habitat and collecting method, date, name of collectors and the UTM code in parentheses. The localities are depicted on UTM grid maps, and the date of collectings before ( ) and after ( ) 1990 are presented with different symbols. The symbol refers to specimens with doubtful or unreliable locality data. Ampedus balteatus (LINNAEUS, 1758) (Figs 1, 23) Notes Associated with coniferous forests, it is sporadic in the hilly and mountainous regions. Most specimens are from the westernmost parts of Hungary, especially from the Kõszeg Mountains. Specimens emerged from commercial timber were found elsewhere as well. Localities in Hungary (Fig. 1). Distributional map of Ampedus balteatus (LINNAEUS, 1758) Ampedus cardinalis (SCHIÖDTE, 1865) (Figs 2, 24) Notes This is one of the largest and most rarely collected species of Ampedus DEJEAN, 1833 in Hungary. It occurs in old growth oak forests and wood-pastures of the hills and lowlands, often along with Lacon querceus. Its pronotum is longer than wide, with the disc matt because of dense and deep punctation; the elytra have distinctive paler suture, which helps separate the species from its congeners. Ampedus quadrisignatus (GYLLENHAL, 1817) (Figs 8, 30) Notes It prefers deep stream valleys and old ravine forests. Most records were from the Mecsek Mountains (MERKL et al. 2006, SÁR et al. 2003), but recently it was found in several other regions as well. It develops in lying red-rotten trunks of broadleaved trees (cherry, oak, ash and alder), where the larvae prey on grubs of Aesalus scarabaeoides (PANZER, 1794). Localities in Hungary (Fig. 8).
