3 Department of Criminology Internship Agreement Between And Department of Criminology This agreement is made and executed on this day of and between (hereinafter referred to as Organization ), and the UNIVERSITY OF MAINE acting through the, Department of Criminology of the College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences (hereinafter referred to as University ). The University and the Organization hereby agree as follows: 1. This agreement shall commence on and shall continue in effect until terminated as hereinafter provided. 2. Either party may terminate this agreement upon the giving of ten (10) days written notice to the other party. Notice shall be deemed properly and sufficiently given either delivered personally to the other party, or deposited by certified or registered mail return receipt and addressed to Organization at: [Please provide organization name and mailing address.] and to University at, Department of Criminology, P.O. Box 9300, Portland, Maine The Department of Criminology and the Organization agree to participation in the Internship Program, the purpose of which is to provide criminology students with an opportunity to extend their education by applying social science perspectives, concepts, substantive knowledge and methodology to practical problems in a variety of organizations. 4. That the Department of Criminology of the College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences within the is recognized as the
4 credit granting, coordinating, and supervising sponsor of the Criminology Internship Program. 5. That qualified students will be selected for participation in the Criminology Internship Program from applications submitted to the Department. Student interns shall be screened for specific skills relevant to the needs of the Organization. 6. That the Organization will accept an intern only after an official representative of the Organization has interviewed the prospective student intern and given formal approval of the applicant. 7. Although they are not employees, student interns shall be subject to the rules and regulations of the Organization. 8. The duration of a student s placement, for 3 units of academic credit, is twelve (12) weeks at a minimum of eight (8) hours per week; for 6 units of academic credit, is twelve (12) weeks at a minimum of sixteen (16) hours per week. Specific time commitments (days and hours) for practical experience and training shall be mutually agreed upon by the Organization, the University, and the individual student. 9. The Organization will provide observational opportunity and practical experience, but shall not have responsibility for the curricula and instruction given the students; these will be provided by individual faculty at the University. 10. The field study assignment shall be structured to provide the student intern an opportunity to: a) develop an understanding of the functions at a particular workplace; b) develop an understanding of linkages between subsystems and administrative information to plan and evaluate specific work assignments; c) develop an ability to perceive relationships between theories learned in the classroom and practice experienced in the field; d) develop a capacity to analyze and make recommendations for the solution of problems related to the efficiency and effectiveness of the field study tasks. 11. Each student intern is responsible for the development of an internship proposal which builds upon the following information exchange between the Organization supervisor and the student intern: a) student describes own learning objectives and activities for reaching these objectives; supervisor evaluates the feasibility of the objectives and activities within the Organization: b) supervisor delineates the tasks student will be assigned to perform. At least 50% of the student s time must be spent in experiential learning, the
5 rest of the time may be used to assist the Organization whether or not the assignments aid the student s growth and development. 12. Organization supervisor shall confer on a regular basis, preferably weekly, with the student to give directions for and review status of assignments and to provide perspective to the overview of actions leading to a larger goal. 13. Organization supervisor shall provide ongoing assessment and feedback related to work approach, progress and products, and complete and return to the student s faculty sponsor the evaluation forms provided by the University. 14. The University agrees to accord the Organization the right to suspend or terminate the internship of any student for reasons of health, unsatisfactory performance or other reasonable causes upon giving written notice to the University and to student intern. 15. The University agrees to indemnify and hold the Organization harmless from any and all expenses, claims, lawsuits and judgments which the Organization may become liable to pay or defend as the result of the negligent acts of any student intern while participating in the Internship Program under this Agreement. 16. All concerns regarding this contract and the field study students should be directed to the Internship Coordinator, Department of Criminology, University of Southern Maine.
