1 January 12, 2015 Faculty Senate Meeting VICE PRESIDENT FOR INTERPROFESSIONL EDUCATION AND INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS S REPORT ACADEMIC RESOURCES P. Ciejka BrowZine: In January, the Library will make BrowZine, a free app that lets you browse, read and monitor the latest journals available from your iphone, ipad or Android tablet. BrowZine is a way to easily keep up with the newest articles in your field! It includes thousands of journals, both from Open Access journals and supported publishers that the UTMB Library subscribes to. BrowZine arranges articles by subject on a library branded newsstand. Come See Our Exhibit: The Library is hosting the National Library of Medicine s traveling exhibition, Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War from January 19 to February 28 th. The perspectives of surgeons, physicians, and nurses are richly documented in the history of Civil War medicine, which highlights the heroism and brutality of battlefield operations and the challenges of caring for the wounded during wartime. David Walker and Lisa Cain Ms. Shelley Smith Chief Tom Engells Topic: Proposal for The Post professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Faculty Senate Report Interprofessional Education & Practice Scholars Program Campus Safety OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS J. McKee Accreditation Action: The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, at its December Board meeting, formally accepted the UTMB Fifth Year Interim Report. 1

2 INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION AND PRACTICE (IPEP) Prepared by Shelley Smith, Assistant Director of IPEP IPE Day IPE Day is scheduled for Thursday, March 5 from 1 p.m. 5 p.m. The theme is Health Promotion is Within Reach. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Victor Sierpina. To date, 13 workshops have been confirmed and will be led by faculty from all four schools. Interprofessional Scholars Program The IPE Scholars Program has recently added two activities in which students can participate. Senior Care which provides interprofessional care to the Holland House and Frontera de Salud, weekend trips to Brownsville, Texas to provide interprofessional care are approved have partnered with IPEP. Students participating in these events will write reflections, discuss the event with their mentors, gain mentors approval and document the event on their e portfolios. An Interprofessional Scholars meeting will be held Thursday, January 22, The purpose of the meeting is to update the program, provide assistance to students on projects, and discuss IPE Day. Students will provide leadership for the event as part of program requirements. Interprofessional Education and Practice Advisory Committee The committee will convene on Thursday, January 28 for a quarterly meeting. The Toronto Model for Interprofessional Education and Practice that is detailed in the publication, Creating the Health Care Team of the Future 1 will be discussed. In addition, the details of IPE Day will be shared with the members. IPEP Collaborates with Professionalism Committee IPEP continues to work with the Professionalism Committee to present Brown Bag Lunches with an interprofessional forum to discuss respect at UTMB. 4 Program News and Updates Theresa Miles, DNP student, is serving on the National Capitol Region Task Force to prevent falls in military treatment facilities. Theresa, a GNP and graduate of our post MSN/GNP program, is currently employed at the Internal Medicine Clinic at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Mercy Kuruvilla, DNP student, is the recipient of the $2,500 Pfizer oncology grant from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Mercy, an FNP and graduate of our MSN program, is currently employed at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Carrie Simmons, DNP graduate, presented her poster A Process Change for End of Life Autonomy at the UTMB Sealy Center on Aging Forum on Aging and won first place in her category of posters. UTMB School of Nursing welcomes the following new faculty: Niki Cronk, RN, MSN, FNP BC Clinical Assistant Professor Graduate Program Patricia Davis, RN BC, DNP, MS, NEA BC, CNL Associate Professor Graduate Program Clinical Nurse Leader Track Administrator T. 5 Faculty Updates Debra Armentrout, PhD, RN, MSN, NNP BC has been appointed to the Will Dean Bivens Singleton Professorship in Pediatric Nursing. Dr. Armentrout is an alumnus of UTMB s Nursing PhD program and has served as a faculty member at UTMB School of Nursing since She is an Associate Professor and the Track Administrator for the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program. M. Kathleen Murphy, DNP, RN, NEA BC, FNP BC, has been nominated for committee membership for an Institute of Medicine (IOM) ad hoc study, Public Health Approaches to Reduce Vision Impairment and Promote Eye Health. This report is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Eye Institute, National Center for Children s Vision and Eye Health and Prevent Blindness. Carol M. Wiggs, PhD, RN, CNM, AHN BC has been elected to membership of The University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education (Shine Academy). 2 Page

6 The American Journal of Nursing named Core Curriculum for Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing, 5 th edition Book of the Year in two categories (first place for Critical Care Nursing, second place for Child Health). The text was co edited by M. Terese Verklan, PhD, CCNS, RNC, FAAN who also authored a chapter.
