Network Security Survey of Small Businesses July 2006 Copyright All Covered Inc.

Executive Summary Most small businesses now make use of a network of PCs and servers to run their operations. Vital company data is stored electronically in these netw orks and com panies day-to-day functions depend on the network being available and secure. In many cases however, the small business either ignores or is unaware of the risks and threats that could jeopardize the safety of the data or the smooth running of the business. To better understand the scope of these issues, All Covered, the leading technology partner for small businesses, interviewed 200 companies about the security of their networks during June The companies surveyed range from those with 10 or fewer employees, to companies with more than 100 staff. While more than half of the respondents to the survey stated that they believed their network was either safe enough or very secure, there were a large number who admitted that they doubted the strength of their defenses against attack. This is not surprising given that the survey shows that almost all businesses have experienced some kind of security threat over the last year, including everything from viruses, lost computers or back-up tapes, hacker attacks or employees stealing information. The top threats experienced were: #1 Viruses or Trojan horse attacks #2 Lost or stolen computers or data storage #3 Hacker attacks #4 Employees stealing information or allowing unauthorized access #5 Lost of stolen back-up tapes or discs Most companies stated they had: - Firewall - Virus Protection - Spyware Protection - Spam Control Most stated they did not have: - Smart password policy (forcing passwords that are hard to hack) - Automated patch management for security - Network use policies for employees (so they know how to use the network safely) In general, many of the businesses do not appear to be fully protected or secure against attack, nor have tested their defenses. Recommendations There is no single fix to the network to ensure security and continuity of operation. All Covered recommends a layered approach to addressing security concerns, that looks at all the different areas of vulnerability, from software, hardware and processes to training. Each layer adds a different level and focus of protection to the environment: - Blocking attacks that are Network Based - Blocking Attacks that are Host Based - Eliminating Security Vulnerabilities - Safely Supporting Authorized Users - Tools to Minimize Business Losses and Maximize Effectiveness Regular testing of the security measures is essential to assure business continuity. 2

Overall Security Level Respondents were asked to what degree their network was secure. More than 50% of companies stated in the survey that they believed their network was either very secure or secure enough. Of the remainder, 30% considered their network only somewhat secure and 14% admitted that things were not as secure as they should be. Smaller companies tended to believe that their network was very secure or secure enough 63% of companies with fewer than 10 employees and fully 74% of those with between 11 and 25 staff. Larger firms were less sure of the strength of their defenses, with only 52% and 44% of those firms with 51 to 100 staff and more than 100 respectively feeling very secure or secure enough. Moreover, in the 51 to 100 employee category, 23% identified their network as not being as secure as it should be. Generally, the larger the company the larger the network and the greater the number of potential security risks that can befall it. 3

Threats Experienced Respondents were asked whether they had experienced any of a list of security attacks or lapses over the last 12 months. The survey shows that viruses or Trojan attacks on a network are the most common threat experienced, with around one half of all respondents having experienced these kinds of issues. Larger companies reported the lowest rate, at 40%, indicative of their better defenses, while more than 60% of the smallest firms reported these kinds of attacks. The loss of company data either through theft, the mislaying of storage devices or inadvertent destruction, appears as a minor issue for the smallest companies but it is a risk that grows with size. More than one third of larger firms reported these kinds of events. Attacks by hackers were reported most often by small firms with fewer than 10 employees and the largest ones, with more than 100 staff. The smallest networks may be the most vulnerable and the larger ones may have a higher profile and hence a greater likelihood of being targeted. Employees themselves can be a source of security risk. Around 10% of companies indicated that they were aware of unauthorized data access or data theft by their own staff over the last year. 4

Security Devices and Procedures in Use Good systems, processes and procedures can help to protect against security related issues. The survey asked respondents which high priority security methods they were using. Most respondents reported that they have firewalls and virus protection in place. 20% to 30% however lack spyware and spam protection, leaving their users vulnerable to annoying or even dangerous malware. On average, less than half have implemented a Smart password policy or automated patch management for security. A Smart password policy is one that obliges the user to select passwords that are resistant to guessing or being hacked. They need to have a mixture of regular and special characters and be changed with regular frequency. Smaller companies are less likely to have implemented network use policies for their employees compared to those with more than 100 employees. More than 80% of these larger firms have taken the time to define and communicate guidelines on correct and incorrect use of the network, in an attempt to reduce the incidence of people using the network for non-work related activities that are likely to result in increased security risks. Many of the respondents, including more than 50% of the smallest and largest firms have wireless networks in use. They can offer some of the most vulnerable access points to the network if not properly secured. Few companies indicated that they were using all identified security protection measures. 5

Security Tests Even the best security procedures and devices cannot be guaranteed to be providing the required protection unless they have actually been tested. A vulnerable hole may exist in a firewall, anti-virus definitions may be out of date or employees may not understand the correct protocol for using the network in a safe and secure manner. Around one quarter of all respondents reported that they either could not remember when they last tested their security m easures or didn t know w hether they ever had. T his m eans that w hile they m ay have im plem ented any number of security systems, they cannot be assured that they are providing adequate protection. The smallest companies were the most likely not to have ever tested security. Around 10% of all firms had tested their set-up but not for more than a year. The type of threats can have changed significantly over this kind of period, leaving dangerous exposures. At the other end of the spectrum, around one third of companies stated that they had tested their defenses in the last 30 days. Regular validation of security elements of a network is critical to maintaining the integrity of the system, as part of an overall Business Continuity plan. Unfortunately, it is often only after there has been an incident affecting the business that the company opens its eyes to the exposure that it has. 6
