2 What is CAPES? public foundation within the Ministry of Education. 1951: research and graduate studies in Brazil. promoting/evaluating national Graduate System of Education (+ than 3,000 stricto-sensu programs). 60% national graduate scholarships (~35,000 MsC, ~10,000 PhD yearly). ~ 8,500 grantees abroad. promotion of international cooperation. basic education (January 2008). access to scientific information (Virtual Library).

9 Science without Borders Program - SwB Main goal: to consolidate and expand S&T,I in Brazil through international exchange and mobility. It aims to: increase the presence of students, scientists and industry personnel from Brazil in international institutions of excellence; encourage young talents and highly qualified researchers from abroad to work with local investigators in joint projects, contributing to the capacity-building of human resources and promoting the return of Brazilian scientists working overseas; induce the internationalization of universities and research centers in Brazil throughout the establishment of international partnerships and a meaningful review of their internal procedures in order to make the interaction with foreign partners feasible.

10 Science without Borders Program To send out for overseas training, 75,000 Brazilian grant-holders up until the end of 2014, through the joint effort of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) and the Ministry of Education (MEC). In addition, 26,000 scholarships will be provided by the private sector. Also intended to nurture the arrival of at least 1,200 young talents and 300 foreign scientific leaderships.

13 Selection procedures in Brazil Calls for proposals; Brazilian universities submit their top students; Language skills (depending on the destination country). Final selection process done bythe agencies (merit&projects).

14 Young talents (Brazilian or foreigners from abroad) Young : post-docs working abroad are qualified to receive funding and resources to perform a one to three year-long research project in Brazil. The host research group would also receive funds, as a bench fee. The program anticipates the availability of funds for at least 100 young researchers per year.

15 Target Students Undergraduate students 6 months, or up to 12 months (internship); Ph.D Students full PhD programs or in 12 months sandwich program; Postdoctoral fellowships programs In leading international institutions (6 months up to 24 months).

17 Special Visiting Researchers (Brazilian or foreigners from abroad) Senior researchers to perform joint projects with research groups in Brazil and to work in our country for up to three months every year during two to three years. doctoral students and post-docs will be supported by the project both in Brazil and abroad. support for living expenses during the period in Brazil and also funding for the local laboratory.

18 Selection procedures abroad Universities are selected based on international rankings; In Germany DAAD contacts these universities/institutes to negotiate the placement of Brazilian students.

19 Undergraduate sandwich 2011: 5 calls to: Germany, USA, France, Italy, UK and Canada. 2012: calls to: Australia, Belgium, Canada, South Korea, Spain, Netherlands and Portugal.
