7 INSTITUTIONAL ABOUT MEHMED II THE CONQUEROR Mehmed II, also known as Muhammed bin Murad, Mehmed the Conqueror, and Fatih Sultan Mehmed (30 March May 1481), was an Ottoman sultan who ruled first for a short time from August 1444 to September 1446, and later from February 1451 to May At the age of 21, he conquered Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) and brought an end to the Byzantine Empire. Mehmed continued his conquests in Anatolia with its reunification, and in Southeast Europe as far west as Bosnia. Being a highly regarded conqueror, Mehmed is considered a hero in modern-day Turkey and parts of the wider Muslim world. Among other things, Istanbul's Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and Fatih Mosque are named after him. Mehmed II introduced the word Politics into Arabic "Siyasah" from a book he published and claimed to be the collection of Politics doctrines of the Byzantine Caesars before him. He gathered Italian artists, humanists and Greek scholars at his court, allowed the Byzantine Church to continue functioning and ordered the patriarch Gennadius to translate Christian Oil on canvas by Gentile Bellini doctrine into Turkish. He collected in his palace a library which included works in Greek and Latin. Mehmed invited Muslim scientists such as Ali Qushji and artists to his court in Constantinople, started a University, built mosques (for example, the Fatih Mosque), waterways, and Istanbul's Topkapı Palace and the Tiled Kiosk. Around the grand mosque that he constructed, he erected eight madrasas, which, for nearly a century, kept their rank as the highest teaching institutions of the Islamic sciences in the empire. He founded many mosques and religious schools in the city, such as the Külliye of the Fatih Mosque. Mehmed II is recognized as the first Sultan to codify criminal and constitutional law, long before Suleiman the Magnificent; he thus established the classical image of the autocratic Ottoman sultan. His thirty-one year rule and several wars expanded the Ottoman Empire to include Constantinople, and the Turkish kingdoms and territories of Asia Minor, Bosnia, Kingdom of Serbia, and Albania. Mehmed left behind an imposing reputation in both the Islamic and Christian worlds. According to the 20th Century historian, Franz Babinger, Mehmed was regarded as a bloodthirsty tyrant by the Christian world and by a part of his subjects. Mehmed is the eponymous subject of Rossini's 1820 opera Maometto II. Istanbul's Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (completed 1988), which crosses the Bosporus Straits, is named after him; and his name and picture appeared on the Turkish 1000 lira note from 1986 to On his accession as conqueror of Constantinople, aged 21, Mehmed was reputed fluent in several languages, including Turkish, Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Greek and Latin. In 1481 Mehmed marched with the Ottoman army to a new campaign but when reaching Maltepe, Istanbul, and the place was later called Hünkar Çayırı (Field of the Sultan) he became sick and after some days he died on May 3, 1481, at the age of forty-nine, and was buried in his Türbe in the cemetery within the Fatih Mosque Complex. 6 fsm.edu.tr

8 From the Depths of History to the Far-reaching Horizons of Science and Art Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University (FSMVU) is a higher education institute, established in 2010 by the Republic of Turkey General Directorate of Foundations whose goal is to be at the forefront of Turkish higher education and research. The university is subsidized by the famously old Fatih Sultan Mehmet waqf (charitable trust), which was founded in 1471 by Sultan Mehmet II The Conqueror of Istanbul himself in order to preserve and protect the Hagia Sofia mosque, which was later expanded to provide funding for education and has continued to provide funds for learning since then. We feel privileged to have our origins in such a venerable academic heritage and strive to carry this tradition further by combining traditional education with contemporary knowledge. And continuing this tradition the Board of Trustees of FSMVU provides varying amounts of scholarships to all students who attend FSMVU. The University is located in the historical peninsula of Istanbul, at the heart of the city in buildings whose history date back to earlier centuries of the Ottoman Istanbul. This gives a very unique edge to our mission. We are constantly aware of occupying an important place at a point where daily life intertwines with culture, history and art. We hope to be a meeting point for higher education in the same way and we welcome all students, academicians and cooperation with other higher education institutions. 11 INSTITUTIONAL FSMVU CAMPUSES FATİH CAMPUS The Fatih Campus serves as the Rector's Office. One of the examples of original civil architecture of the time, the building was originally designed as the local government building and therefore when it was built in 1914 it was called Şehremaneti Fatih Dairesi. TOPKAPI CAMPUS Topkapı Campus is composed of the buildings of Yenikapı Mevlevihanesi Külliyesi. Yenikapi Mevlevihanesi was built by Janissary Scribe Malkoc Mehmet Effendi, who was initiated into the Mevlevi order through Sunbul Effendi, and it was opened for service in Yenikapı Mevlevihanesi is one of the best example of a type of Tekke Architecture called Asitane. It is the second mevlevihane in Istanbul after Galata Mevlevihanesi. According to historical records, Yenikapı Mevlevihanesi was initially composed of a masjid, a semahane, harem, fountain, tomb and 18 dervish cells. Yenikapı Mevlevihanesi served the Mawlawi order for 328 years until it was closed down in 1925 with all the other lodges and institutions of religious education. The building was renovated from 2005 to After the renovation it was allocated for the use of FSMVU. The University continues the sufi tradition by organizing dervish rituals twice a month which is open to the general public. 12 KÜÇÜK ÇAMLICA CAMPUS This campus built by the General Directorate of Foundations has begun to serve as Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University's School of Foreign Languages in the academic year. The campus is ideally located away from Istanbul's traffic and is suitable for carrying out educational activities in a healthy and efficient way. It is close to means of public transportation and to central districts like Üsküdar, Ümraniye and Kadıköy, with many student dormitories at a walking distance to our campus. Students placed in our university will attend compulsory foreign language preparatory class in this building which answers all needs of the students. This Campus hosts: Department of Foreign Languages (English) HALİÇ CAMPUS The Campus is located in an area called Halıcıoğlu within the district of Beyoğlu. Buildings in the campus are one of the first examples of modern barracks buildings which are very typical of the era; end of 18th and beginning of 19th century architecture. This complex was also where the first modern educational institution of the Ottoman Empire, Mühendishane-i Berrî-I Hümayun, was started in Due to different educational activities conducted in the complex, it is also called Mühendishane and Hendesehane. This Campus hosts: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Architecture and Design, Vocational School, ALUTEAM, KURAM, Center for Continuing Education (SEM), TÜMER KANDİLLİ CAMPUS Kandilli Campus is the home of the Faculty of Fine Arts, the School of Fine Arts and the Institute of Fine Arts. The campus also functions as a center of fine arts open to the public with galleries. This building has been built by Üsküdar Municipality as an Art Center in 2012, and FSMVU is in a partnership with Üsküdar Municipality to organize art and culture events. 13 INSTITUTIONAL ÜSKÜDAR (ATİK VALİDE) CAMPUS Located in Üsküdar, in a neighborhood named after itself, the complex consists of a group of buildings surrounding a mosque and a madrasah. It is quite unique with its historic sections like caravanserai, Hadith School, the school for the memorization of Quran, a kitchen, a guest house, an elementary school, a bath and a hospital. These buildings were built by Mimar Sinan between 1570 and 1579 and were funded by Nurbanu Valide Sultan who was the mother of Sultan Murad the 3rd. Until the 18th century, the place was called Valide Sultan Külliyesi but after the construction of a new similar set of buildings in Üsküdar Square with the name of Gülnuş Sultan, it started to be known as Atik Valide, Valide-i Atik (The Old Valide). The Valide-i Atik Külliye's renovation by the General Directorate of Foundations continues and will be used for educational purposes when it is finished. 15 ACADEMIC UNITS FACULTY OF LETTERS AND HUMANITIES The Faculty of Letters and Humanities' main disciplines are Turkish language, art, philosophic thought and history; these studies are deeply rooted in Turkish culture and heritage; born of social and individual experiences, events, phenomena, and people in this geography. The primary goal of the Faculty is to define the historical, literary, sociological and psychological contexts of these data through the use of scientific methods. To achieve this goal, we draw inspiration from our cultural principles, look at the values of the East and the West, try to understand where our own values stand in human heritage, and to make use of a comparative approach which runs parallel to the products of Western and Eastern languages and cultures. Students can choose any one of these options and study it in depth through individual and team-projects. The courses are compatible within the standards of the European Credit Transfer System. 37 Department of Interior-Architecture The education offered at this department is a study of architectural and art history within the concept of civilization. In addition to the technical knowledge, classes to improve freehand drawings and sketches are also offered. In this way we train future interior architects who can design on a substantial background, express their thoughts and present their designs with a contemporary approach.
