Honours degrees are classified as first-class, second-class (upper or lower division) or third-class. However if students do not gain sufficient credits to achieve an honours degree then they may be awarded a non-honours degree or other qualification. 23,000 students were attracted from over 150 countries 4 5

International Politics As globalisation and internationalisation become increasingly important in today s modern society, a need has arisen for quality research and education around these key issues. The Department of International Politics is particularly proud of its reputation, both nationally and internationally, of providing postgraduate courses with strong professional and global orientation. The research that we undertake and the courses we offer create high class graduates and contribute to the expansion of knowledge within International Politics. Made up of a growing number of specialist academic staff, the Department continues to expand at a rapid pace and now offers two very successful undergraduate courses and a postgraduate masters course all of which cover highly relevant issues in International Politics. In addition, the Department has shared links with, and reflects the needs of a number of international organisations and corporations. In general terms, our syllabus is geared towards increasing the understanding of globalisation and international politics in the twenty-first century. Within that, the focus is on building knowledge and understanding of global policy-making on current issues such as development, the environment, human rights and trade. Students study the complexities of economic, social and political globalisation, that affect the relations of the government and society with other countries. Importantly, our approach to the subject is markedly different and more dynamic than that adopted by the more traditional international relations degree courses. In particular, our approach differs in three key ways: we focus on the movement of ideas in global policy-making; we cover all the major inter-governmental organisations, such as the United Nations, the European Union and the World Bank; and we enable analysis on how governments relate to other political transnational actors. The Departments academic team understand the importance of creating graduates suitably equipped to make a valuable contribution to their prospective employers. The significance of this approach is that the skills developed by our international politics graduates are of direct relevance to international non-governmental organisations. They are also often highly valued by large multi-national companies. A relatively small academic unit, we offer an intimate approach to teaching and learning enabling a more personalised environment in which academics are readily available for discussion and you are treated as an individual. Our current undergraduate students have established a Politics Society which meets on a regular basis and hosts events both within the School and externally

BSc International Politics UCAS Code: L240 The degree in International Politics focuses on contemporary global issues, with no history other than an introductory module of the late twentieth century. In addition, the study of international organisations as policy-making structures is core to each year of the degree; we cover not just the diplomatic relations between governments, but the economic, social and political relations between societies undertaken by companies and private groups. Students also engage in theoretical debate about how we can understand global politics in today s world. International Politics does not just mean knowing about other countries, but studying politics at the level of the global system, which influences all governments and all societies. The skills of International Politics graduates are of direct relevance to all those who need to know how their organisations fit into the world as a whole. This includes not just governments and intergovernmental organisations such as the United Nations, but also international nongovernmental organisations and multi-national companies. The School of Social Sciences Undergraduate courses

Course structure During the first year, you will be introduced to competing theories about our understanding of international politics; the issues of the Cold War, the Middle East and decolonisation since 1945; current environmental, human rights and development issues; the role of transnational companies and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) as participants in global politics; and the structure of the United Nations. You will also take one other social science option or a language, from a list of elective modules. In the second year, the core theory module will be on the nature of research in International Politics and the core international organisations module will be on the European Union, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organisation. In addition, you will choose two elective modules from those provided by International Politics and by Sociology. In the final year, you will take two core modules and two elective modules. One core module integrates all the previous work on theory, international organisation and global issues, in greater depth, by asking how policy-making in international organisations can be understood in the context of theories of interdependence, international regimes, globalisation and global governance. The other core requirement is a project, on a topic of your own choice, which is taught by one-to-one work with your supervisor. Career prospects Graduates of this programme would be suited to a wide range of career options, from the civil service, NGOs, journalism, teaching to international law, international organisations and the corporate sector. Entry requirement A-level grades BBB UCAS tariff points IB: 30 GCSE: grade C or equivalent in English language and Maths or Statistics. 18 BSc International Politics and Sociology UCAS Code: LL23 This degree combines essential, core modules from both international politics and sociology, it offers a broad understanding of both subjects with a special focus on how the local and global relate to each other. As a result, International Politics at City includes not just intergovernmental relations, but also intersociety relations of non-governmental organisations (such as the Red Cross and Amnesty International) and transnational corporations (such as Ford, Shell and Microsoft). Students will gain a unique Cityapproach to each subject and a broad understanding of local, national and global relations. As with the single honours degree in international politics, the joint degree is of direct relevance to all those who need to know how their organisations fit into the world as a whole. The School of Social Sciences Undergraduate courses

Course structure In the first year you will be introduced to competing theories about our understanding of international politics; the role of transnational companies and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) as participants in global politics; and the structure of the United Nations. With a thriving community of over 300 students on undergraduate, masters and doctoral programmes, we have created a vibrant and stimulating environment for teaching, research and intellectual exchange. We benefit from the presence of a growing number of externally funded researchers, international visiting scholars and an increasing number of research students working on projects close to our core interests. This, in combination with our central London location, has produced a cutting-edge research context for staff and students alike. At undergraduate level, the Department of Sociology has developed distinctive degrees in Sociology, Criminology and Media and Communication Studies. We also run joint programmes with the departments of Psychology and International Politics. Our courses equip students with the knowledge and skills that are relevant to a range of professional careers. We also have a commitment to training the next generation of sociologists. As part of this objective we combine theoretically innovative analysis with rigorous training in the methodologies that enable our students to research the socio-economic, demographic, cultural and technological issues that define contemporary social life. This ethos is reflected throughout our undergraduate and postgraduate activities

BSc Sociology UCAS Code: L300 This well-established degree is concerned with important contemporary topics and debates such as cultural and socio-economic transformations, social stratification and class formation, gender and sexuality, race relations and new ethnicities, migration, human rights, citizenship and cosmopolitan identity, governance, media and communications and crime and insecurity. Throughout your studies, particular emphasis is placed on developing the global dimensions of sociological analysis. As well as providing students with a critical understanding of the fundamentals of sociological thought, the degree encourages the evaluation and planning of research. Modules reflect the particular expertise of academic staff who are internationally recognised for their research. Sociological theories are taught both in specialised modules and in the context of options addressing specific social, cultural and political issues. During the first year, for example, students apply their sociological perspective to the vital issues that are redefining our understanding and experience of rapidly changing urban environments. The School of Social Sciences Undergraduate courses

Course structure In the first year students take four modules. All students take the Introduction to Sociology module which establishes the core foundations for degree level study. You are introduced to sociology s analysis of modernity, its distinctive ideas and analytical approaches as well as the key methods that have been developed to make sense of complex social relationships and institutional arrangements. A critical concern is careful analysis of the taken-for-granted character of everyday life, social relationships and institutions. Sociologists interrogate assumptions about the social world showing that it is possible to reassess how we think about the society we live in. In the second year, you begin to specialise more in advanced topics, studying four modules, including two core modules and two elective modules. One of the core courses considers the main approaches to contemporary sociological analysis and research processes, whilst the other is concerned with understanding the causes and consequences of cultural and societal change. This ranges from changes in households and intimate relationships through to globalisation of economy, culture and politics. You can also choose options from a portfolio of intellectually stimulating sociology, media and cultural studies and criminology courses. In the final year, you can choose from three specialist modules which are taught by leading researchers. You also complete a research dissertation on a topic of your choosing, in consultation with a personal supervisor. Career prospects A sociology degree develops a range of skills and intellectual abilities valued by employers including analytical skills, communicating ideas, independent judgement and the ability to think constructively about key issues. Our graduates are found within a variety of different professions. Possible sectors for employment include civil service, broadcasting, advertising, press and public relations, audience and market research, the cultural industries, education, campaigning groups, non-governmental agencies, think tanks, the criminal justice system, protective agencies and health and social services. Because we develop skills and abilities valued by employers, City is consistently ranked as one of the top UK universities for career opportunities and professional development.
