3 The Social Problem The Achievement Gap Only 15% of Black and 19% of Latino 8 th graders score at the proficient level in reading compared to 43% of White students Fewer than 33% of Black and 26% of Latino year olds go to college Of Black and Latino students that do go to college, only 39% and 46% respectively complete their bachelor s degree in 6 years The Opportunity Gap By 2018, 63% of jobs will require post secondary study By 2018, we will need 22 million college graduates to meet employer demand. We are on pace to fall short of that by 3 million At current rates, over 70% of Latino and Black youth will be frozen out of new jobs 3
