The Danske Institut, in Via Omero, is near the Galleria Nazionale d Arte Moderna. The British School is directly behind the Galleria Nazionale d Arte Moderna; take the ascending street to the left side of the Galleria s façade, and enter the BSR at the foot of the steps on the right. The Istituto Austriaco is a red brick building at the top of Via Gramsci. Turn left at the traffic lights and enter through the main iron gate in Viale Bruno Buozzi. Mass transit options: Tram 3 Stazione Ostiense to Valle Giulia (a very long, scenic ride). Tram 19 Piazza Risorgimento to Valle Giulia. Metropolitana Line A [red] Termini to Flaminio [Piazza del Popolo] through the Flaminian Gate (Porta Flaminia) to the street directly opposite. Nearby lunch option: Café delle Arti, Via Gramsci 73, at the side of the Galleria Nazionale d Arte Moderna (across Viale delle Belle Arti) Tuesday, 24 November 2015 ² The American University of Rome: Via Pietro Roselli 4, Roma F The Auriana Auditorium is reached through the main American University of Rome entrance at the triangular junction between Via Pietro Roselli, Via Calandrelli, and Via Ulisse Seni. F The Barnabite Theatre is in Via Ulisse Seni, using the entrance beyond the church steps. F The Fondazione Centro Studi Emigrazione (CSER/Scalabrinian Brothers) is in Via Dandolo 58, downhill from the American University campus. Neighborhood: Gianicolo/Mura Gianicolense, near Villa Sciarra, the American Academy, and Fontana dell Acqua Paolo Mass transit options: Bus 75 Termini [stop in Bus Station opposite Hotel Nord Nuova], get off at Via Giacinto Carini/Fratelli Bonnet stop (in front of pharmacy). Bus 44 Teatro Marcello - Montalcini, get off at Via Carini/Fratelli Bonnet stop (in front of pharmacy). Other buses that stop near the American University: Bus 870 and 710 to Via Carini/Fratelli Bonnet, and 115 (get off at the stop nearest San Pietro in Montorio). Also useful, with one change: Tram 8 from Piazza di Venezia to the stop in front of the Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione in Trastevere; walk uphill a block to the bus stop in Via Emilio Morosini to catch Bus 44, 75, or 115. 2 at the end of the day, board buses at the Via Fratelli Bonnet stop (going down the hill), just past the arches outside the main entrance of the American University. From the Via Carini bus stop to Via Pietro Roselli: backtrack in Via Carini and turn right onto Via Fratelli Bonnet, toward the city wall and paired of arches. The American University s main entrance is just beyond the left-hand arch. Nearby lunch options: Pizzeria da Simone (pizza by the slice), Via Carini, 50, near the bus stop and pharmacy. Wednesday, 25 November 2015 ² The American Academy in Rome: sessions will take place at the Villa Aurelia, Largo di Porta San Pancrazio 1, Roma, The Villa Aurelia is just down the street from the main building of the American Academy (Via Masina, 5). Look for the large wrought-iron garden gates facing Porta di San Pancrazio (Museo della Repubblica Romana e della Memoria Garibaldina). Neighborhood: Gianicolo (Janiculum Hill), at Porta di San Pancrazio, not far from the Fontana dell Acqua Paola Mass transit: same as for the American University of Rome. To find the Villa Aurelia: From the Via Carini bus stop, backtrack in Via Carini and turn right onto Via Fratelli Bonnet, toward the city wall and paired of arches. Pass through the left-hand arch and turn left into Via Pietro Roselli. Take the first left onto Via Angelo Masina, which ends in Largo di Porta San Pancrazio. Thursday, 26 November 2015 ² Pontificia Università Gregoriana: Piazza della Pilotta, 4, Roma, Neighborhood: Campus Martius, near Palazzo Colonna, Palazzo del Quirinale (presidential palace) & Trevi Fountain Transit options: walking distance from Piazza di Venezia and southern end of Via del Corso. 64 and 40 from Termini train station; 8 tram from Trastevere to Piazza di Venezia; and many more. Possibilities: From Piazza di Venezia take Tram 8, getting off at Piazza Sonnino 2

3 (first stop across the Tiber); walk along Via Gustavo Modena until it becomes (several name changes later) Via di Santa Dorotea; and turn right onto Via di Porta Settimiana/Via della Lungara. Enter the university through the door on the right just past the city gate. Bus 87, 64, or 40 to Largo di Torre Argentina/Via Arenula stop; then walk along Via Arenula or take Tram 8 toward the Tiber, crossing at Ponte Garibaldi to Piazza Sonnino, after which follow the walking directions above for Tram 8. On foot from the Campo dei Fiori area: cross the Tiber at Ponte Sisto and then, from Piazza Trilussa, take Via di Ponte Sisto, veering right into Via di Santa Dorotea; turn right onto Via di Porta Settimiana, which becomes Via della Lungara. On foot from the Vatican area: take via della Lungara toward Trastevere. Depending on your point of departure, you may also find it useful to take Bus 75 or 44 to the Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione in Trastevere, connecting to Tram 8 (direction: Piazza Venezia), and then to follow the walking istructions above for Tram 8. Lunch options: ubiquitous in Trastevere. Saturday 28 November Sessions will be held concurrentlyy at the Notre Dame Rome Global Gateway & at John Cabot University ² University of Notre Dame Rome Global Gateway, Via Ostilia, 15, Roma, Neighborhood: Celio (Caelian Hill), near San Clemente and Santa Quattro Coronati; short walk to the Colosseum. Via Ostilia runs between Via San Giovanni in Laterano and Via Claudia, parallel to the Colosseum and one street away, Transit options: Metropolitana Line B [blue] to Colosseo; Tram 3 from Valle Giulia (direction: Ostiense); Bus 87 from Largo di Torre Argentina, to the Colosseum. Please note that there is a Global Climate March planned for November 29 th in Rome from Piazza Farnese to the Fori Imperiali. It is wise to leave extra time for moving from one area of the city to another. 3

4 SOME FRIENDLY ADVICE ABOUT MOVING AROUND ROME Rome Metrobus System: buses, trams, metro (underground) The Roman mass transit authority provides an online trip planner and bus routes in English and in Italian ( OR It also offers a an app for cell phones: Before boarding a bus or tram you must purchase a ticket (un biglietto metrobus ). Tickets are sold at newspaper kiosks, tabacconist shops ( Tabacchi ; look for the white T on a black background), and in vending machines at metro stops. With the exception of a few trams equipped with vending machines, tickets cannot be purchased on board the vehicles. When you board a bus or tram, you must immediately validate the ticket in the machine, usually located near the front or back door. Controllers do spot checks, and the fines for non-validated tickets are steep. (You will see some people boarding without validating; many Romans have year-round subscriptions.) Roman buses, trams, and metro can be crowded. Be very careful of your belongings, especially wallets and passports. Rome has a comparatively low violent crime rate, but the pickpockets are skilled. The metro system is limited, and buses can be slow. If you intend to use Roman mass transit, leave ample time. Walking Rome is very much a walker s city, especially in the low-lying areas of the Campus Martius and Trastevere. Depending on where you are lodging and which conference venue you are trying to reach, walking may be the most pleasant and time-effective option, either alone or in combination with buses and trams. Keep in mind that some of our venues (especially Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday) are on hills. The climbs can be steep but also beautiful and exhilarating. On Saturday our sessions are divided between venues in different parts of Rome. We advise planning for at least 45 minutes of travel time between the two locations using mass transit or 20 minutes by taxi. An important caveat: at dusk open your umbrella, especially if you are walking along the Tiber or in areas with trees. In autumn millions of starlings (storni) swarm just before dark: The swarms are spectacular and the birds harmless except for the little gifts they frequently drop from on high. Taxis We suggest that you take only official Rome white cabs with the Comune di Roma logo on the exterior. When you board, be certain the taxi driver activates the taximeter. For information about fares see: There are various ways to procure a taxi. o Go to a taxi stand. Drivers line up at spots marked with an orange TAXI sign. Stands are located near most major monuments (e.g. the Colosseum; the Lateran), at mass transit hubs (e.g. Termini train station), and in or near important piazzas (e.g. Piazza di Venezia, Largo di Torre Argentina, Piazza San Pietro). 4

5 o Call or text for a taxi. Dial (+39) or use the Chiama taxi app available here: If you are departing from a hotel or from an institution, the concierge or doorman (portiere) may be able to call for you. The driver will activate the meter as soon as the call or text message is received, and so you will pay more than if you board at a taxi stand. o Haling a moving taxi sometimes works, but the drivers are not always able to stop in narrow or busy streets. When you board, again, be sure the driver activates the taximeter. Other options We have not used these services, but you may wish to investigate them as alternatives. Uber cabs: Rome also has a new and very widely used car-sharing system: Airport transfer Options: Official Rome city taxi from the airport taxi stand. See above under Taxis for fare information. There are fixed rates for transportation from Fiumicino or Ciampino airports to locations within the Aurelian Wall. From Fiumicino airport: metropolitan train to Trastevere, Ostiense, or other neighborhood where you are lodging; or special train to Termini train station. Buy your ticket from the newspaper seller or at the vending machines, and validate it before boarding From Ciampino airport: bus shuttle services such as Terravision, etc., which can be booked online.
