Key Objectives The session will help you to: Explore the variety of career options available to you Learn more about looking for work Prepare for the Careers Fair 2014

Key Messages for 4 th Year HCA Graduate labour market is more elastic than you think Forward planning does not commit you to anything but makes subsequent decisions easier Have a positive mindset for employment Maximise employer and career learning opportunities

Understanding the Graduate Labour Market & Career Planning Step 5: Gain Experience Step 1: Know Yourself Step 4: Take Action Lifelong Career Planning Step 2: Research Opportunities Step 3: Make Choices

Overall Undergraduate Picture UK-Wide Taken from What do Graduates do (2014)

School of HCA University First Degree Graduates

Breakdown of HCA Employment : Graduate and Non-Graduate

Graduate (and non-graduate) jobs? Graduate scheme a gold standard? For many occupational areas, traditional graduate schemes don t exist Non-Graduate roles stepping stone approach Many graduate vacancies lie within small to medium sized enterprises (SME s) Competitive market but the market is far more diverse than is readily presented in the media Labour Market Information has more impact and value when its personalised your individual research into occupations As much as 40% of graduate roles are not degree specific Minimum academic requirements vary across roles You can t control the economy but you can determine your response

Graduate Attributes Sometimes, when studying a non-vocational subject, it can be hard to see how what you learn in the course of your studies will prepare you for your post-university career. Being comfortable with this yourself, and getting it across to future employers, is vital. (Higher Education Academy, 2009)

Getting it across to future employers What do recruiters want? HCA Graduates: Work experience Your unique blend of transferable skills and experiences Academic ability Extra-curricular experiences

Looking for Work

Advertised Job Market Unadvertised Job Market Should only be part of job hunting strategy. Myth that all jobs need to be advertised. Key thing is to understand that it does exist. Far too many students restrict their search to advertised opportunities and potentially miss out.
