4 IASC: ttp:// From Michael Tjernström: * MOSAiC: The yearlong (at least) interdisciplinary drifting Arctic observatory has been an IASC flagship project since the working groups started in A number of meetings, workshops and proposals have followed; the latest being a side event during the 2015 ASSW and an Implementation Workshop in July A proposal for the ARM Mobile Facility has been granted and most recently AWI has granted access to Polarstern as a platform for MOSAiC 2018/19. The biggest show-stopper right now is finding funding for the logistics and in particular for the resupply missions. * Data Rescue: This has also been ongoing from the start. The underlying idea here is to mine undigitized sources of climate data, from historical records and stations and from ship's log-books. * Arctic to mid-latitude Linkages: The hypothesis that enhanced Arctic sea-ice melt in late summer can influence the following season's weather has been around for a few years and has been (and is) discussed vigorously. IASC has arranged (through the AWG) and cosponsored a number of workshops and conference sessions on this topic, including within ICARP III, but the results are complicated and the general consensus right now is that there is no clear picture, neither if winter climate on the northern hemisphere has become more extreme nor if there is a clear link to the Arctic; at the least there are regional aspects that needs to be considered. Activities will continue, but at a lower level. * Dynamic of ocean/sea-ice/atmosphere interactions: IASC/AWG was coorganizing a very well attended workshop at Rosendal off Bergen during spring Slightly less than 100 participated with about 60 presentations and 25 posters. The workshop was great success with very vital discussions, both in the sessions and in breakout groups. A meeting review paper is being prepared for the AMS Bulletin. * Arctic pollution: This is a relatively new activity focusing on airborne pollution. AWG has sponsored a workshop and some conference sessions. A white-paper was formulated during the workshop and will form the basis for future activity. * A new activity on Arctic radiation and fluxes is supported. AWG will also cosponsor a conference on Arctic climate of the last millennium. AWG will continue to interact with CLiC and the Polar Prediction Project's (PPPs) Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP)

10 SCAR horizon scan -> roadmap challenges Horizon scan moves on: Roadmap challenges 2 surveys. What action is needed to address the important research questions in Antarctica? ARC Antarctic Roadmap Challenges workshop report + paper before Christmas: The largest technical and logistical challenges, and formulation of a strategy (what should be prioritized). Sneak peak: Technological advances needed 1. Underwater (and under floating ice) navigation and positioning. 2. Bandwidth and continuity of data communication from remote locations (specifically underwater including under ice). 3. AUVs, gliders and UAVs with greater range (6000 km or more) and capacity. 4. Long-term ice and deep-water capable sensor platforms and networks of platforms (including ice tethered platform/profilers, sea ice buoys, drifters, moorings and observatories). 5. Unmanned physical and biological sensors and groups of sensors (power needs/greater efficiency). Access requirements 1. Winter / year-round access to the continental margin / shelf edge including important polynyas. 2. Beneath floating ice (sea ice and ice shelves). 3. Circum-Antarctic coverage (specific problems for specific regions). 4. Deep-water. 5. Year-round nearshore access.
11 Logistical advances needed 1. Greater continuity, coordination, and year round access of research capable ice-breaker(s) requires international collaboration. 2. Marine and sea ice observatories in high science priority areas (e.g. Islands, Amundsen Sea, Western Weddell Sea, Bellingshausen Sea, and the Eastern Ross Sea) making appropriate measurements. 3. Data infrastructure (data sharing and data management systems). 4. Underwater docking ports to support AUVs, gliders, and moorings. 5. Improved co-ordination of bathymetric data collection.
12 Significance for Sweden? Research questions addressing the Horizon Scan questions are important and well motivated, will score high when judged in the peer review process. A strategy how to get where we can answer the important research questions is being formulated. Should also guide Polar s prioritizations (e.g., move stations to better locations, coordinate icebreaker capacity internationally)

20 Oden to Southern Ocean? Wallenberg grant to buy an AUV with under-ice capacity: National facility, peer-reviewed ranking of applications. Plan: Procurement starts november, testing fall/winter 2016, Arctic/Greenland summer 2017, Antarctic under Getz ice-shelf missions in winter 2017/2018
21 Oden to Southern Ocean? There is a large international interest to get Oden down (strong heavy icebreaker needed in the most highly prioritized areas). Combine with under-ice shelf missions for the new Wallenberg AUV, a unique opportunity to explore the ice shelf cavities. Chemistry, geology, physics and biology including exploratory work. How large is the interest in Sweden? Spread the word at home interested can contact Anna Wåhlin at anna@gu.se (will summarize)
Hur prioritera deltagande?
