1 Mentor Public Schools The Cornerstone of the Community The Shore Stakeholder A Message from the Principal Dear Shore Community Member, The three Mentor middle schools have been working collaboratively with their PTA organizations to bring in a program called Rachel s Challenge to our middle school communities on October 18-19, Rachel's Challenge exists to inspire, equip and empower every person to create a permanent positive culture change in their school, business and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness and compassion. Rachel's Challenge Objectives for Schools: Create a safe learning environment for all students by re-establishing civility and delivering proactive antidotes to school violence and bullying. Improve academic achievement by engaging students' hearts, heads and hands in the learning process. Provide students with social/emotional education that is both colorblind and culturally relevant. Train adults to inspire, equip and empower students to affect permanent positive change. Programs are set for October 18 at Memorial Middle School at 9:00 a.m. and Ridge Middle School at 2:30 p.m. and at Shore Middle School at 9:00 a.m. on October 19. Student representatives from all three middle schools will then join together for training with the trainers from Rachel s Challenge from 11:00 12:30p.m., so that the message brought to our students can lead to continued growth in our respective schools. There is also a community event slated for October 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Memorial Middle School Auditorium. All are invited and encouraged to attend! 2 Keep Your Child Motivated in School All Year! It s too early in the school year for your middle schooler to have a ho-hum attitude about class! Instead he/she should be looking forward to the months ahead. You can help him/her do just that if you: Let yourself be wowed. Do you give off a been there, done that vibe when your child tells you about something he/she is learning about in school? Stop! A fact or idea may not be new to you, but if it s new to your child, show some enthusiasm. Your science teacher poured liquid nitrogen on a flower and it froze? Just like that? How cool! Celebrate small victories. Yes, scoring 100 percent on a math test is reason for high-fives all around. But so is a solid B on a history project your child worked hard on. Show him/her that you no ce the effort that he/she has been pu ng in and it may mo vate him/her to keep trying his/her best. Only congratula ng your child for A s may squash enthusiasm by causing your child to think, Why bother trying at all if only perfect ma ers? -Article from Middle School Parents Still Make the Difference, October Research Shows 10 Important Benefits to Parent Involvement You take time to get to know your child s teachers. You give your child tools for organization. You go to school events. Do you know what else you are doing? You are sending an important message to your middle schooler. What you are saying is this, Your education is important. I want the best for you. You are important. Here are 10 more reasons to be involved in your middle schooler s education. All are supported by research. Students with involved parents usually: 1. Do be er with classwork. 2. Have be er a endance. 3. Feel that school is a place they belong. 4. Show be er behavior at school. 5. Like school. 6. Finish homework. 7. Want to go on to college or trade school. 8. Care about their grades. 9. Make good use of educa onal me. 10. See a be er rela onship between parents and teachers. Source: V.A. Anfara, Jr. and S. 3 Shore s students and staff paused throughout today to read the names of the 2,996 victims of 9/11 in their Social Studies classes and then walk out to the flag pole in front of the building where each student planted 5-6 flags to honor the memory of those that lost their lives 10 years ago. Each of the 2,996 flags had the name, age, and location of a person who lost their life on 9/11. Thanks to Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Compton and the Social Studies staff for carrying out today s meaningful remembrance. Page 3
