Perspectives of Energy Consumption

Electricity Supply

Technology Options Concentrating Solar thermal Power plants CSP PV and Concentrating PV power plants Wind power Geothermal Biomass

CSP

CSP

CSP

PV Four technologies are of concern: - Monocristalline Silicon - Polycristalline Silicon - Thin film CdTe - Amorphous a-si Concentrating PV and tracking are on demonstration stage

PV

Solar Potential Algeria has the most important solar potential in the MENA region and one of the best in the world for both CSP and PV applications.

Solar Potential

Solar Potential

Solar Potential This figure shows the importance Of the solar ressouce on the cost of The kwh produced.

Wind Potential

Solar Maps White areas correspond to the Ergs or moving dunes (Oriental Erg, Occidental Erg and Chech Erg) and therefore are excluded for CSP or PV implementations. -Technical Potential for CSP = TWh/y (DNI>1800 kwh/m²/y) -Economical Potential for CSP = TWh/y (DNI>2000 kwh/m²/y) -PV Potential = 13.9 TWh/y

Solar Maps Solar Global Irradiation at site latitude for Winter (left) and Summer (right) Source: CDER

ÜBERSCHRIFT (ARIAL BOLD 22/26) Solar Maps Another source for solar and wind atlas lunched recently by ARENA ( where GHI, DNI, Land and social and economical data are give with high precision.

Technology selection In order to select a renewable technology for a given region, some issues other than the solar potential have to be investigated : -Technology status - Grids (electrical and gas) - Base and peak loads ( for storage option ) - Economics - Enviromental impacts

Technology selection CSP technological Status

Technology selection PV technological Status

Electrical Grid

Gas Transmission Network

Base and peak loads ( for storage option )

Economics Today s costs Cost reduction potential Value of storage Value of auxiliary firing

Environmental impacts Water issues Land use Energy and material Emissions

Projects and achievements in PV Microgrids in remote location of Algeria Electrification of 16 villages supplied with individual PV kits (5 MWc)

Projects and achievements in PV Pilot Plants of 0.9 MW in the region of Ghardaia to test in situ the following four technologies : -Monocristalline silicon (352 kwc) -Polycristalline silicon (352 kwc) -Thin film CdTe (100 kwc) -Amorphous a-si (100 kwc)

Projects and achievements in CSP Site : Tilghenit, Hassi R Mel Power : 150 Mwe Solar Share : 25 MW Technology : Parabolic trough Solar Field : m²

Projects and achievements in CSP AlSol Project in Bouguezoul Hybrid Solar Power Plant Project in Algeria - Project base on bilateral agreement between Germany and Algeria - Adaptation of the technology to Algerian conditions - Selection of suitable plant - Establishment of scientific collaboration (CDER-DLR/SIJ)

Projects and achievements in CSP Extension of the AlSol projet to Technopol to include testing plateforms that include other technologies. Provide research and training center

Projects on perspective : PV and CSP Type of technology : Thin Film Capacity : 500 MWc Investment : 40% Cevital, 60% loan Location : near the MGF factory, Larbaa Market : Algeria, Morroco, Tunisia, Lybia, Middle East

Projects on perspective : PV and CSP Two Solar power plants of 150 MWe each in El Oued and Bini Abbes Probable technology : Central Receiver with Molten Salt as HTF and Storage Media Cooling : Hybrid ( Dry and Wet) Grid connected

Others on perspective Silicon manufacturing unit Center for approval of PV equipments Mirror manufacturing unit Heat transfer fluid and storage equipment factories Power block equipment factory

Industrial capacities Industry sectors concerned include : - Glass industry - Steel metallic industry - Steel piping - Aluminium industry - Electric and electronic industry Players in terms of construction work and EPC contractors : - Construction companies - Energy O & M companies - Engineering consultants

Industrial capacities Float Glass : - Mediteranean Float Glass/Cevital (in Join Venture with the Chinese CLFG) with a production capacity : 3 lines of 600, 700 and 900 tons/year. - ENAVA : manufacturer of ordinary glass with intention to invest in Float Glass technology Electric and Electronic components : This sector shows high annual growth (~10%). 16 local companies are active in this sector in an important industrial pole in north-east of Algeria Steel Industry : The liquid steel production capacity of Algeria is 2.4 Million Tons/year (ArcelorMittal)

Conclusions The Solar Potential Exist and is very high A detailled Renewable Energy Program is defined with an objectve of 7200 MWe in CSP and 2800 MWc in PV until 2030 A special fund of 120 Billion $ has been announced CSP (Parabolic Trough and Power Tower) and PV (mono and poly Silicon) technologies are mature R & D present ( Research centers and Universities) Weaknesses: Infrastructure, Equipement, and industrial know-how
