4 From the heart of Texas to the heart of America s conveyor systems. The Wire Belt Company of America is rooted in the great American tradition of invention, enterprise, and commitment to quality. Back in the early 1900s ( ), Jesse Wade Greer was selling candy from his grocery store in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. It was there that his talent for innovation first surfaced. He created a process for coating candy that was later to grow into other patents, and ultimately, a small industry. By the 1920s, Jesse was manufacturing candy-making equipment in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Chocolate coaters, cooling conveyors, chocolate melting, tempering kettles, and of course, the famous, patented Greer Chocolate Coater. The conveyor belt on the Greer Coater became known as the Greer Belt. In 1947 the belting division was spun off as Wire Belt Company of America. Today, the tradition continues Our belts carry our reputation for toughness, resilience, commitment to quality, and innovation. That s the promise of J.W. Greer and the Wire Belt family. 2

6 Flat-Flex Flat-Flex Metric Flat-Flex XT Flat-Flex and Flat-Flex Metric The unique features of Flat-Flex conveyor belts offer numerous benefits that increase productivity, help contain costs, and improve your overall product quality. Some of these advantages include: The largest proportion of open-mesh area available up to 86% which improves efficiency in cooling, coating, draining, heating and drying applications. Smallest diameter end rolls and drive rolls ensure that your most delicate products are handled gently and easily with extremely tight transfers. No-slip, positive drive eliminates the need for complicated tracking mechanisms. USDA Accepted no hidden crevices make 302 stainless steel Flat-Flex belts easier to clean and maintain. (Also available in high-tensile strength carbon steel for non-food applications.) Wire Belt has received acceptance from the USDA for our Flat-Flex, Flat-Flex EL, Flat-Flex XT, CompactGrid, Eye-Flex, C-CureEdge, EZSplice and Sani-drive product lines. The issuance of the certificates is in compliance specifically with the 2003 hygiene requirements for the design of mechanical belt conveyors used in meat and poultry processing. Being awarded the USDA acceptance is further testament to Wire Belt s innovative stainless steel belts which help guarantee higher sanitation standards.* B E LT S E L E C T I O N To Determine the appropriate belt for your application use the belt selection criteria outlined in the product summary section of the mesh guides. Primary Considerations in selecting the right belt for your application: Mesh (Pitch and Wire Diameter) Strength Belt Size Belt Material Edge Single Loop Edge Double Loop Edge C-CureEdge SLE DLE CC Very low belt mass means reduced power consumption for lower operating costs plus improved heat transfer to the product during processing. Variety of mesh sizes available choose the exact degree of openness that provides both excellent strength and minimal contact between product and belt. Flat-Flex XT Flat-Flex XT offers you an alternative to balanced-weave belts for medium-duty processing applications. Flat-Flex XT has lower belt mass than balanced weave belting styles which results in lower power consumption, faster processing, and more product throughput. The strength of the Flat-Flex XT comes from the Z-bend joints in the wire mesh. As a rule, the greater the number of joints across the width of the belt, the stronger the belt. The spacing layout on the XT features more belt joints in a given belt width than the comparable original Flat-Flex belt. XT s unique design reduces cyclic loading or metal fatigue because of superior distribution of operating stresses among the belt joints. * Meets requirements of NSF/ANSI/3-A Single Loop Edge SLE Double Loop Edge DLE Your specific application will determine the Flat-Flex belt that you will need for peak performance efficiency. 18 C-CureEdge Belting Wire Belt now offers the new C-CureEdge (pronounced Secure ) option on most Flat-Flex belts. The Patented C-shaped endloops have many advantages that will increase safety and improve productivity in your facility. C-CureEdge will not tangle during shipment, storage, or installation. It will not snag or catch on another belt during operation or movement of equipment from one position to another. These two factors alone will save you time and repairs. Bottom line this makes your facility safer, more productive, and more cost effective. Advantages of the C-CureEdge Eliminates zipper effect tangling when un-rolling or re-rolling Patented design improves flexibility and reduces individual strand stress on the outside edge of the belt extending belt life and lowering your T.C.O.* Diminishes opportunity for conveyor damage caused by end loop irregularities found in competitive belts Minimizes risk of accidents from sharp or burred open ends Reduces opportunity for conveyor-to-conveyor catching and tangling during transfers No conveyor modifications as it is a direct drop-in replacement for any Flat-Flex belt C-Cure Edge is an available option on most meshes in the following Wire Belt product lines: Classic Flat-Flex Flat-Flex EL Flat-Flex XT X = End Loop Size Note: end loop dimensions match all standard Flat-Flex endloops 16 C-CureEdge Flat-Flex EL C-CureEdge U.S. Patent number 5,404,998 * Total cost of ownership C-CureEdge Flat-Flex XT C-CureEdge Meshes Currently Available Mesh End Loop Size 42 X X X X X X Under Development in other mesh configurations call for availability

19 EZSplice Splicing Strand EZSplice, only from Wire Belt, offers you an alternative to the traditional belt splicing method. EZSplice is a single pre-formed, pre-shaped strand made to fit the width and mesh of your belt. This offers you longer belt life, stronger belt joints, and less downtime from failures at the splice which saves time and money. Products The EZSplice strand eliminates the weaving of traditional splicing and replaces it with a simple hook and loop method, saving you time. The strength of the EZSplice strand comes from the pre-shaped Z-bend joints. This eliminates the chance of weak points from the bending and straightening of traditional splicing. Once installed, the strand is locked into place by simply crimping down the Z-bend joints of the EZSplice with our Engineered Profiling Pliers. Advantages of the EZSplice Get longer belt life, STRONGER belt joints, and save time and money by reducing downtime for repairs When used as an original splice in a replacement belt, EZSplice extends belt life dramatically and helps to prevent failures at the belt joint This revolutionary system not only extends the life of your belts, but makes joining or splicing them up to 20 TIMES FASTER! EZSplice eliminates the process of lacing or weaving of a single wire strand through the spaces across the width of your conveyor belt Works with our new patented C-CureEdge belts. 20 CompactGrid Belting Welcome to the next level of efficiency, cleanability and performance Looking for one of the best options for product support with an open mesh design? Want a conveyor belt that isn t heavy, clunky, chain driven, or difficult to clean? Wire Belt has the solution for you! Introducing USDA Accepted CompactGrid, Wire Belt s latest conveyor belt innovation. CompactGrid is engineered specifically to handle smaller, delicate products, while giving you a lighter weight, open-mesh belt design that can outperform many competitive offerings. Want longer belt life? No problem! CompactGrid s rugged framework offers maximum strength under significant loads, lessening the time you will spend on maintaining your conveying system, as well as reducing the number of belt replacements over time. Installation on your conveying system is quick and easy. When the time to replace a belt arrives, CompactGrid s design allows you to join, or splice, the belt on your conveyor by simply hooking the belt ends together and crimping to close. Need a belt for a cooking operation such as a conveyorized fryer or oven? Transferring a product directly onto a cooling line? CompactGrid will take the heat! Made of stainless steel, you ll rest assured the belt won t sweat, slip, droop, or catch fire on your system like many plastic conveyor belts can. It s rugged, yet open, design also makes it the perfect solution for cooling freshly baked or fried products in high-volume, highthroughput processes. Engineered with 70% open surface area to provide optimal performance in processes where product coating, drainage, and liquid or air circulation are factors. CompactGrid also offers a much tighter wrap capability than most friction driven balanced weave metal belt configurations. This enables for improved conveyor-to-conveyor transfers and minimizes the chance for product yield loss in high speed processing operations. CompactGrid raises the bar to the next level in the conveyor belting industry. It brings efficiency, cleanability, and performance to the forefront it focuses on total cost of ownership, and brings a new level of value and flexibility to your operations. 18

This provides CompactGrid with a no-slip forward drive, and excellent tracking capabilities. Many competitive belt designs are friction driven, which can cause slippage, that typically requires expensive belt tracking devices to correct. The drive set for CompactGrid is made up of a three-piece sprocket sandwich comprised of one tracking guide centered between two drive sprockets (figure 1). While the idler set consists of one tracking guide centered between two idler blanks (figure 2). These three-piece component sets are then positioned approximately every 6 (150mm) across the width of the drive and idler shafts (figure 3). The appropriate direction of travel is shown below (figure 4). (figure 3) (figure 4) Tracking Guide Idler Blank 20 (figure 2)

23 CompactGrid Drive Components Specifications Wire Belt has designed an excellent positive drive system for CompactGrid. These devices are put together in sets. The conveyor drive end sets include a tracking guide and two sprockets. The conveyor idler end sets include a tracking guide and two blanks. The three components are placed side by side to make the set. Various numbers of sets will be required across the lateral dimension of the conveyor, depending on the width of the belt. The specifications for the drive system components are outlined in the table below. The Drive sprocket component is shown in the illustration to the right (figure 5). DRIVE DIRECTION Ø OUTSIDE DIAMETER Ø ROOT DRIVING SHELF CLEARANCE FOR BELT UNDERSIDE Products Please Note: Initially, the drive and idler components, along with their associated tracking guides, will have to be purchased in appropriate ratios to make up the required sets. This will ensure proper operation and tracking of the belt on the conveyor. However, the drive-sprockets, idler-blanks, and tracking guides, will also be available separately for repair and replacement purposes. This provides you with the economy and flexibility of being able to acquire only the parts that you need, when you need them. 24 Specialty Belts When applications require special handling of complex products, such as maintaining product separation, minimizing points of contact, or keeping the product aligned, you need a Specialty Belt from Wire Belt. These belts are custom-designed and manufactured to customers exact specifications for such diverse applications as: automotive brake pads, electronic circuit boards, chocolates, bagels, and snack foods. Compound belt Compound Belts These belts incorporate specially-formed strands with raised sections called flights in pre-determined locations in the basic flat belt. These are typically used to help move product up an incline, down a decline, or to support, separate or minimize contact between products. The pattern of flights can be designed to create virtual pockets that totally isolate otherwise easily damaged products. Aligned Belts These belts utilize rows of flights to permit control and separation of delicate products to minimize damage and waste. In this configuration, all strands are formed in the same manner throughout the belt length. However, the number of rows and the spacing can be varied. Aligned belt Crowned Belts The most common crowned belts are actually referred to as reverse crowned belts. They are typically used in hold-down applications such as conveyorized frying. The belt is pre-stressed so the belt will remain level and flat when it is supported only on the edges. Flat-Flex SE Stable Edge Belts Wire Belt has engineered a process to build belts for applications where belts are typically at risk of curling at the edges. Flat-Flex SE Stable Edge belts will remain flat in these high risk applications. To find out if your mesh is currently offered in the Flat-Flex SE Stable Edge configuration, please contact our Technical Services Department at Note: Additional information on specialty belts can be found on page 41 in the technical section of this catalog. 22
