2 The Event StudyWorld 2009, 4 th International Fair for Higher and Continuing Education was held from May 15 th 16 th, 2009 at the Russisches Haus der Wissenschaft und Kultur in, Germany. The event was organised by ICWE GmbH ( in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and took place under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Stefan Hormuth, President of the DAAD. StudyWorld was once again a great success and more international and diverse than ever before. More than 9500 visitors attended the fair and benefited from this unique opportunity. Participants had access to a wealth of vital information, individual advice on worldwide higher and continuing education and internships abroad. A total of 178 exhibitors from 29 countries presented their programmes and services at the fair. Moreover, StudyWorld exhibitors and trade visitors took advantage of an ideal opportunity to enhance their international networking. Those interested also had the opportunity to seek advice for their individual study and career plans. Visitors comprised about 45% high school students, most in their final year. A good third of attendees were university students; a significant number educational experts (8.7%) and other professionals interested in continuing education (8.5%) This was also refl ected in the age statistics: 43.5% of visitors were between 16 and 19 years old, over 30% were between 20 and 25 years old. Nearly half of all attendees came from (47.7%) and half (47.4%) came from other Federal states. Approximately 5% were from abroad. These figures refl ect the significance of the fair on a national level. 3 Visitors Visitors main interests were in bachelor s and master s degree programmes both in Germany (bachelor s 48.7%; master s 38.9%) and abroad (bachelor s 51.0%; master s 35.6%), as well as in internships abroad (46.6%) and funding of educational stays outside Germany (40.4%). The most popular location for studying was Great Britain, followed by the USA, Germany, Canada and Australia. The favourite destinations for internships were the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Australia and Africa. According to feedback from exhibitors, visitors were demanding, well prepared and open-minded. They came to the fair with very specific questions, but were also looking for a general overview and inspiration. When asked about their reasons for attending the event, over 53,4% of visitors stated that they were looking for specific information, whilst about 63.5% wanted to gain a general overview. 4 Exhibitors Alongside 81 institutions from Germany, the fair welcomed 97 exhibitors from the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the USA. The majority of exhibitors were state-run and private higher education institutions from Germany and abroad. 5 Seminar Programme The diverse seminar programme, which ran parallel to the fair, was a key feature of StudyWorld Exhibitors were invited to contribute free of charge to the proceedings in order to enhance their presence at the exhibition. The programme attracted more than 2700 visitors to over 60 lectures, providing visitors with background information and useful tips on studying, internships and careers. Specialists from the field of higher and continuing education covered a wide variety of themes in their presentations, providing visitors with information e.g. on how to prepare for a semester studying abroad or the signifi cance of networking as a career factor. Guest of Honour Canada was hosted as the Guest of Honour at StudyWorld universities, colleges and other educational institutions from Canada presented their extensive offerings at their booths within their high profile exhibition area. The Canadian Embassy provided tips regarding issues of admission to and funding of educational stays and explained visa and entry requirements. Moreover, they informed about specific studies as well as internship and job opportunities within Canada throughout various presentations in the seminar programme. The Guest of Honour presentation was organised in close cooperation with Edu- Canada International Education Promotion group at Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) and the Canadian Embassy in. Additional On-Site Activities At the fair, visitors also had the opportunity to visit two photo exhibitions. Themed "Adventures Abroad", 847 photos had been submitted prior to StudyWorld 2009 and the best 10 photos selected by a jury were presented. Also, parts of the DAAD exhibition "Komm in mein Land" with texts from DAAD-alumni worldwide were displayed. Furthermore, all visitors were invited to take part in a prize draw held over the two days of the exhibition. Exhibitors contributed more than 40 valuable prizes, including academic and languages courses in Germany and abroad as well as alternative prizing (i.e. ipods, books, t-shirts etc.) Press Coverage StudyWorld 2009 was covered extensively by local and national newspapers and magazines, radio stations, as well as trade and online media. Der Tagesspiegel (daily newspaper) included a special full-page feature about StudyWorld 2009 prior to the event and the radio station Deutschlandfunk broadcast their weekly magazine Campus & Karriere live from the fair on May 15th, which included interviews about academic exchange with experts and students. 6 Symposium The 3 rd go out! studieren weltweit Symposium on the International Mobility of German Students was held in the run-up of StudyWorld, on May 14 th and 15 th. It was once again very well-received. The event was organised by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in cooperation with ICWE GmbH. Responses StudyWorld 2009 was once again rated an enormous success by all those involved. "We are pleased to have been able to offer the participants such an extensive choice of domestic and foreign exhibitors and universities, particularly because it exceeded even last year s figures. StudyWorld again proved itself to be one of the very best addresses for people seeking advice for their educational stay abroad. We are confident that it brought the participants a big step closer to their dream of studying or doing an internship in a foreign country." More than 170 exhibitors from over 25 countries and around 10,000 visitors are expected to participate. The fair is organised in co-operation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
