4 Company memorandum SCHOTT Business Unit Solar The Business Unit Solar bundles expertise for the economic and ecological use of the sun as nature s greatest source of energy supplies components for both centralized and decentralized electricity generation from the sun s energy SCHOTT Solar GmbH SCHOTT Solar CSP GmbH PV solar electricity components: wafer, cells and modules Receiver for solar thermal power plants
5 Business Segment (CSP) Concentrated Solar Power
6 Using less than 4% of the area of the Sahara, today's global electricity requirements could be met Compared to other power generation types, the space required is significantly less. Ideal locations are often in dry regions where alternative use hardly comes into question. The space required for solar panels marked with the red squares would theoretically suffice to generate the electrical energy required for the world, Europe (EU-25) or Germany in solar thermal power stations. World (300x300 km) Europe (EU-25) Germany Using 0.2 % of the desert area, it would be possible to cover the increasing requirements of the MENA region for electricity and sea water desalination. Source: Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt [German Aerospace Center] (DLR), 2005 MENA: Middle East North Africa
7 Solar thermal power stations are ideally suited to the earth's sun belt Sun radiation on the earth The sun belt extends roughly between the 40th northern and the 40th southern degree of latitude, i.e. a high number of sun hours and high radiation intensity Sun energy as a local raw material is available locally and unlimited Ideal locations are in part in regions with a high availability of fitting areas (deserts) Average yearly sun radiation Very good Good Satisfactory Not satisfactory Source: Solar Millennium AG, Erlangen
8 Construction and function of a solar thermal parabolic trough power station Collector Normal capacity 50 MWel, 360,000 m² with approx. 15,000 receivers. Electricity for 15,000-25,000 households Current energy efficiency 14-16%, in the future >20%. A heat carrier oil is heated in the solar field, which then flows into a heat exchanger. The steam which drives the turbines is produced there. If required, a supplementary heat accumulator can be connected. Parabolic reflectors Receivers Trough ("Trog") Thermal accumulators enable reliable generation of electricity during the daytime and at night, i.e. supply security and network stability are also supported when the sun is not shining. Source: Solar Millennium AG
9 Parabolic trough power stations have been operated successfully commercially for over 20 years now and have proven themselves technically Currently, nine hybrid solar thermal power stations are running SEGS I 14 MWel Since 1984 SEGS II 30 MWel Since 1985 SEGS III 30 MWel Since 1986 SEGS IV 30 MWel Since 1986 SEGS V 30 MWel Since 1987 SEGS VI 30 MWel Since 1988 SEGS VII 30 MWel Since 1988 SEGS VIII 80 MWel Since 1989 SEGS IX 80 MWel Since 1990 Their total capacity: 354 MWel
10 Nevada solar one in the USA and Andasol 1 in Spain are the first commercial projects since 1990 Reference projects for solar thermal power stations Nevada solar one, USA Size: 64 MWel, solar only Start of work: February 2006 Commissioning: June 2007 Andasol 1, Spain Size: 50 MWel, 7.5 hours' storage Start of work: July 2006 Commissioning: October 2008 Europe's first parabolic trough power station
11 Studies forecast the solar thermal power station market dynamic developments Market forecasts for solar thermal power stations Cum. installed solar thermal power stations (GWel) GWel 10.0 Sarasin cumulated (2007) Greenpeace/ESTIA cumulated (2005) WestLB estimate cumulated (2007) Opportunities for the CSP market: Subsidy for solar thermal power plants in Spain and the USA Increased number of planned power stations Solar thermal power stations as a cornerstone in the regenerative energies mix Long-term replacement of fossil and nuclear power stations possible The most efficient and best value industrially tried and tested solar technology SCHOTT Solar expectations SCHOTT's market expectations are higher than current market studies The estimate is based on current customer planning
12 The Spanish market driver: Feed In-Tariff Spain: Feed in-tariff 0-25 years: 26,94 ct/kwh < 25 years: 21,55 ct/kwh Valid for 500 MW installed capacities. If 425 MW are on-grid, a transition period will be announced in which all plants being terminated within this period will get the same tariff. The maximum size of a CSP-plant in Spain is limited to 50 MW
13 The US market driver: Renewable Energy Portfolio (RPS) and Investment Tax Credit (ITC) Federal 30% Investment Tax Credit needs to be extended until 2016 DOE R+D budget is finally awakening States CA Carbon legislation and higher RPS will create a huge market for CSP Significant expansion of the RPS in the Southwest Other favorable policies emerging State Renewable Energy Requirements (RPS) California 20% by 2010 and plans to increase to 33% by 2020 Arizona 15% by 2025 Nevada 20% by % Solar New Mexico 20% by 2020 Colorado 10% by 2015
