INTRODUCTION The Department of International Relations, History and Philosophy was set up in 2010 by merging the International Relations and European Studies Program with the ones of History, and of Philosophy. The new structure was accredited under OG no. 631/30 June Currently, the operational study programs are two: International Relations and European Studies; History. ARACIS (Romanian Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education), accredited in 2010 (OG 87/ published in the Official Gazette no. 169/09/ ) the undergraduate program with frequency in International Relations and European Studies. Later, in 2011, the same undergraduate program for low frequency and distance learning were accredited by the same institution. This study program provides: opportunities for qualification for 50 professions included in CAEN (Romanian Qualifications Nomenclature), future career in a different domains, such as diplomacy, education, research, public and private institutions working in European, political or cultural field, NGOs, complex knowledge and training about Romania and Europe relations within the European region and Euro-Atlantic accession process. The History study program was accredited for Bachelor degree with frequency as stipulated in the OG no. 676/2007 published in the Official Gazette no. 481/ Along the years this program was several times under ARACIS evaluation procedures as OG no. 966/29.09.stipulates (Official Gazette no. 697/01/10/2011. The undergraduate programs are also authorized for studying both with low frequency and at distance. The History study program offers: qualification opportunities for 76 professions included in the Romanian Qualifications Nomenclature (CAEN), Page4

5 future career in a variety of fields such as education, research, museums, archives, public administration and private social profile, politically and culturally, NGOs etc. comprehensive training for general and local history and opens horizons of knowledge for human history II. DEPARTMENT MISSION The Department of International Relations, History and Philosophy follows its mission to train specialists in international relations, European studies and history. Thus, our Faculty demarches are oriented towards improving the educational market in the field and promoting worldwide our country image inside and outside the Euro-Atlantic structures. Part of a modern and recognized institution of higher education, the Department of International Relations, History and Philosophy offer to their students the chance to acquire general and complex competences, specialized knowledge, precious abilities and a broad cultural horizon. Our central objective, derived from the mission of the faculty, is to provide sound knowledge, develop students professional profile and give to our undergraduates competences compatible to the European standards, credits transfer and knowledge system. This way we promote also students mobility and diplomas recognition anywhere in the world. This is why our Faculty continuously attempts to optimize the correlation between the theoretical and methodological training and the ability to put into practice, the knowledge accumulated by the undergraduates in various sectors of activity locally and at European level. 6 III. THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS Program of Study: International Relations and European Studies The Educational Plan corresponds to the mission and the objectives of the Bachelor s study cycle. It is structured in three years of study /six semesters, 180 credits, comprising basic (mandatory) specialized disciplines as well as optional/humanistic or general culture disciplines. In the 1st Year there are mandatory disciplines such as: Introduction to International Relations, Theory of International Relations, International Institutions and Organizations, History of International Relations and Diplomacy, Introduction to European Studies, International Public Law, Global Economy, etc. In the 2nd and 3rd Year, the study program includes disciplines such as: Institutions of the European Union, Contemporary Political Doctrines, History of Contemporary Europe, Romania in International Relations, International Communication, Romania s European and Euro-Atlantic Accession, Sociology of International Relations, Security Studies, European Law of Human Rights, Management of International Projects, Management of Crisis and Regional Conflicts, Diplomatic and Consular Law, Geopolitics etc. A significant role in the study major is played by foreign languages which are also mandatory (English and French) and optional (German, Russian, Spanish). The program also gives an important credit to the courses on Applied Informatics and on Practical Work (Internship). Here you may find some of the optional disciplines: The Political and Cultural Particularities of Eastern Europe, Politics of Local and Regional Development, Dimensions and Perspectives on Globalization, International Policies in the Middle East, Diplomacy during Wars, Russia and the West: History and Diplomacy, European Economic Integration, Power Structures and Centers, Conflict Analysis, Ethics in World Politics etc. The required Internship plays a specific role in developing the professional competencies. Therefore, during the second year of study specific attention is given to the practical and applied work hours within different public institutions that collaborate with USH: (The City Hall - 2nd Sector, Ministry of National Defense, National Institute of Statistics etc.). The students involvement and activity in different departments of those institutions is of high effect and importance for their development, as they face real situations and study cases requiring their net contribution. The graduates of this program receive a Bachelors degree in international relations and European studies. Program of Study: History The Educational Plan corresponds to the mission and the objectives of the Bachelor s study cycle. In the 1sth year, there are several mandatory classes: Civilizations of the Ancient Orient, History of Ancient Greece and Rome, General Prehistory and Archeology, Page6

7 Ethno-political and Socio-economic Structures in the Medieval Ages, Europe during the large migrations (the Third Century AC), Medieval Civilization and Culture, the Romanian Principalities in the Medieval International Relations System. In the 2nd and the 3rd year the program includes the following: Auxiliary Sciences, Revolutions of the Modern World, Romania during Modernization ( ), Contemporary Universal History between , Political Structures in the 20th Century - Central and South-East Europe, Romanian Modern History , History of European Integration, etc. A significant role in the study major is played by the mandatory classes of English as well as other disciplines that that allow students to learn working with the archives and in the museums: Romanian Archival Study part of the European Archival Science, Typology of Museum Exhibitions, Archival Science and Historical Research, Museum Science and Historical Research, Producing, Administering and conserving archives, Producing, developing and administering cultural patrimony. The internship work constitutes an important part of the educational process and is realized on the field, on digs and on archeological work sites (including our own work site in Militari Câmpul Boja, Bucharest), as well as archives, museums, and other cultural institutions, based on common agreements. A special attention is given to the psycho pedagogy and methodic modules, which has been created upon students request through the study of the disciplines included in the Educational Plan of the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education (level I). Taking the exams in the courses and the associated colloquiums and gaining 30 credits, the graduates receive certificates that gives them the right to work as a teacher in the National Pre-graduate system. The graduates also receive a Bachelors degree in History. V. FACULTY AND STAFF The educational process developed within the Department of International Relations and European Studies is ensured by highly-qualified faculty and staff, combining scientific competence and didactic methodology with practical experience acquired in the field of international relations, European studies and diplomacy. Our academic staffs hold PhD and prove outstanding outcomes both in scientific research and publications recognized internationally. Some of them are used as textbooks, courses or other didactic papers that students are provided with. In order to ensure the framework for the students to obtain certain competences and professional aptitudes that are absolutely necessary in different fields, the Department consists of 30 academic members out of whom 9 are professors and lecturers, all being qualified to practice in the academic system. The Department of History has teaching personnel professors, lecturers, assistants consisting of academic members who fulfill the requirements necessary to their positions. They are all qualified to practice in the academic system and have remarkable results in the didactic and scientific activity (such as prizes granted by the Romanian Academy or other representative organisms); some of them are co-authors of Page7

8 the latest edition of the Romanians History Treatise, others are authors of prestigious national and international published works. All the academic course organizers graduated from PhD programs, having remarkable results in the didactic and scientific activity. Their professional high-level competence was also recognized by the CNCSIS (National Council of Scientific Research in Academic Field), by conferring them the right to coordinate Ph.D. programs in the field they are specialized in, thus ensuring the necessary framework for the students, master students and Ph.D. students to have in one of the fundamental areas of History. VI. FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT The Department of International Relations, History and Philosophy has modern facilities and equipment, including course rooms and labs provided with the latest generation electronic equipments. Students may use 1 amphitheatre (150 seats), 4 course-rooms, 4 seminar rooms, 2 informatics labs, (equipped with 40 computers), 1 research lab (4 computers, 1 printer having black/white and color printing), 1 library and the reference library, as well as auxiliary didactic facilities necessary for conducting high-level educational and instructive operations in compliance with the national and international standards. The library of the Faculty has about volumes out of which 1500 are periodical, are in Romanian and 1000 in foreign languages. VII. COMPETENCES AND ABILITIES Program of Study: International Relations and European Studies Professional competences acquired by graduating from the International Relations and European Studies Program Use fundamental elements of the theories relative to international relations in the study of the European and international processes; Page8

9 Elaborate European and international projects; Analyze methodologies in the international relations and European affairs field; Plan strategies in the international relations and European affairs field; Ensure assistance in the international negotiation and mediation field between groups having different interests; Provide management and assistance in developing relations within the framework of any European and international entities. All the above mentioned competences and abilities can be obtained by studying the fundamental courses, being compulsory or optional to attend, which are part of the academic program annually updated and adapted to the requirements of the employment market. Program of Study: History Professional competences acquired by graduating from the History Program Finding information about the historical past; Establishing historical facts based on the information resulted from the evidence and beyond the evidence; Oral and written presentation of the knowledge acquired in the language of the studying program, as well as in an international language; Using methods specific to a science auxiliary to History at a basic level (Cyrillic/Slavic/Latin, etc. paleography, epigraphy); Using fundamental concepts and methods of at least one other social or humanist science or of other science related to History or other sciences (Sociology, Anthropology, History of Art, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, etc.); Step by step acquiring of new historical knowledge based upon thoroughgoing study of an age and/or historical issues of average complexity. VIII. JOB OPPORTUNITIES A. Study program: International relations and European studies Graduates of the Bachelor study in International relations and European studies can accomplish any activity and can be employed in a series of professions included in COR during the last years, some professions being generated by the new realities (e.g. Romania becoming a member state of the European Union). Possible professions: Foreign relations officer, European affairs counselor, Political Scientist, Publicist commentator, Editorialist (according to the RNCIS classification, see Page9

10 In addition, the graduates who studied according to the Bologna Charter can also attend specializations programs allowing them to be hired in positions form the Major group 1 (COR): - Ambassador, Diplomatic counselor, General Consul, Counselor to Minister, State Minister, Plenipotentiary Minister, Parliamentary Counselor, Undersecretary of State, Principal Secretary, Head of protocol, Head of the chancellor office. Under Major group 2, the following positions are available: - Diplomatic courier, Protocol organizer, Relations organizer, Diplomatic secretary, Project manager, Expert in foreign relations, Assistant analyst, Expert in structural and cohesion European funds, Project evaluator, Researcher in political science and Assistant researcher in political science. The Specialist Expert Commission has forwarded other new positions to be included in the COR and which the graduates of International Relations and European Studies can hold: Adviser to a Member of the European Parliament Consultant for European projects Adviser in transnational relations Referent for European structural and cohesion funds Expert in foreign relations Assistant analyst Expert for European structural and cohesion funds Study program: History Graduates of B.A in History can accomplish any activity and can be employed in a series of professions included in the COR already a long time ago, as appended during the last years: The Expert Committee who has prepared the no. 1 general list of RNCIS for the filed History has forwarded the following professions compatible with the History specialization: Assistant (university), Assistant Professor, expert for education centers, Lecturer (university), Professor (university) High-school, post-high-school, professional History Teacher, College history teacher, elementary school history teacher, pre-school teacher, history education adviser, education expert, education inspector Archivist, conservator, museum curator, conservator for works of art and historical monuments, archive conservator, archive conservator (graduate studies), conservator cultural goods (graduate studies), Researcher, book lecturer, librarian archivist, referent specialist for cultural institutions, archeologist, historic tourism analyst Historian, historiographer, anthropology researcher, assistant researcher in anthropology, archeology researcher, assistant researcher in archeology, Page10

11 researcher in ethnology, assistant researcher in ethnology, researcher in history, assistant researcher in history Research officer, archive custodian, archive conservator, conservator for historical monuments, conservator for works of art and historical monuments, conservator cultural goods. IX. ADMISSION PROCEEDINGS Admission proceedings, completely transparent, are abiding the principle of equal opportunities and chances for all candidates no matter their age, gender, ethnic and taking exclusively into consideration the candidates knowledge and abilities. Admission is organized only for the authorized and accredited programs of studies; the entire process it is developed in strict accordance to the legal documents and requirements, as in: the Law of National Education 1/2011, the Law 288/2004, MEN Order no. 3404/ , strictly in accordance with General Methodology for Admission for Undergraduate Studies. The application dossier includes the following documents: Baccalaureate diploma (or an equivalent of this) or an official certificate attesting graduation of candidate in the respective year. Birth certificate (copy); Marriage certificate, if necessary (copy); Medical certificate issued by the GP; Identity card with personal numerical code (copy); 3 standard photos; Questionnaire for admission; For those who attend a second faculty course, an official attestation of it and baccalaureate diploma. 12 Strictly speaking, the admission process consists of an interview in front of the admission committee and the filling of the questionnaire. At the interview the committee is analyzing candidate availability for the programs, the knowledge and the academic abilities of candidates. The student can receive a maximum of 4 points for the questionnaire, and 6 points at the interview. The final admission grade results from the arithmetical mean of these grades and the final grade from the high-school examination. The candidates will be accepted taking into consideration the hierarchical order of the obtained mean at the admission contest. The list of selected candidates will be made public on September 30, at the latest. Enrolment into the first year of study is made upon student request, in minimum ten days after selection, pending on fee payment (completely or the first installment), matriculation questionnaire filling and signing of the undergraduate study contract and of the yearly study agreement. The student contract is signed by both parties in original, and a copy is given to the student. X. BACHELOR (B.A) EXAMINATION Graduates of International Relations and European Studies or of the History program are allowed to sustain the Bachelor examination in July or February of the respective year with the same committee and the same academic program. The Bachelor examination consists of evaluation of fundamental and special knowledge as well as defense of the BA thesis. The examination topics and bibliography are made public at least 90 days before the examination. Full-time graduates of the current year of study as well as of previous years are allowed to sustain the Bachelor examination. Registration for the BA examination requires the filling of an official request to be left at the Secretariat of the Department of International Relations, History and Philosophy. The minimal grade to pass the BA examination is 6(six). Page12
