Online World History Syllabus 2016 Ms. Gerber First, A Word About the Online Environment Before we begin an explanation of the course, it is important to consider whether your academic practices are best suited for the online environment. Many students take the course under the belief that it is easy and that they can knock out a year s worth of work in a week. These students quickly discover this view wildly inaccurate. Before you undertake this course, take an inventory of your academic skills and judge if they are indeed a fit for the online class. You must be: Able to follow directions to the letter Able to work independently Able and willing to communicate your questions to your teacher Willing to incorporate ongoing feedback into your work Able to self pace Possessed of a strong sense of integrity Willing to read the syllabus and other guides to aid you in the course Familiar with technology and understand the basics of uploading Willing to look at your every day and communicate with the instructor Equipped with the appropriate equipment and software Well versed in the definition and wages of plagiarism Motivated to succeed In possession of the time it takes to complete this course Clear that no exceptions will be made for you and your summer schedule If you meet these requirements, then: Welcome to Ms. Gerber's Online World History class, a five-week, full credit course that meets the requirements for a full year of social studies. You will access the course from Please save this to your Favorites Format of the Class The class is formally structured; it includes two, two-and-a-half week semesters for a total class length of five weeks. There are only two deadlines for this course; one for Semester 1 and one for Semester 2. You will receive a final grade at the end of each semester, which will become part of your permanent grade. You may work ahead of (but not behind) the schedule to complete it before the five. You will complete your course work by the semester. As long as I receive everything by the Semester 1 due date and the Semester 2 due date, you may set your own schedule. All work is due at 11:55 p.m on the due date. 1

You may work ahead all work for Semester 1 will be open the first day of Semester 1, and all work for Semester 2 will be open the first day of Semester 1. If you have plans for a certain week, you may finish ahead of time. There is no late work. The system will not allow submissions after the due date, which is clearly presented at the top of each semester s work. The days and times you submit work within the assigned week are up to you, however, it is important to pace yourself to ensure completion and responsiveness. You will receive feedback from the instructor in the form of general or individualized s. You will also receive feedback on your first set of Cornell Notes. I provide ONLY 1 round of corrections on your first set of Cornell Notes. Prerequisites You must: Be an enrichment student (this course is not open to remediation students) Attend a MANDATORY orientation meeting Note: Students with an IEP or 504 will not receive accommodations. The Summer Academy is part of the Education Foundation, not El Segundo Unified; we cannot, therefore, exchange these confidential documents. You are required to attend ONE orientation meeting that will be scheduled before the course begins. Three meeting times are offered to accommodate your schedule; you are required to attend only ONE. If you do not attend one of the three meetings, you will be bumped from the course without a refund. The dates of the meetings are on the website and will also be broadcast over the loud speaker during announcements. Only students who provide an either their own or a parent s will receive an notification of the three meeting dates. No exceptions will be made to this policy. This class is open to all El Segundo High School incoming sophomores and upper classmen as well as students who do not attend El Segundo High School. The online class is for enrichment only; students seeking remediation must enroll in the on-site class or through independent study. Enrollment is first come, first served. You are only ensured enrollment if: You receive confirmation If you paid (failure to do so may bump you from the class) The Summer Academy also makes this course available to qualified students from other districts. I again ask that you think deeply about your ability to handle the demands of an online class; it requires the ability to manage your time, work independently, follow directions, and maintain a standard of honesty and habits of mind. Remember, the course will be demanding as we must reduce a full year of learning into five weeks. 2

Materials - Modern World History, Patterns of Interaction by McDougal Littell (you will need to pick this up at the El Segundo Library on your own). I have made copies and posted each textbook chapter on Moodle in the area where it is assigned so it is possible to read the textbook online. - A computer with Internet connection - Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer most recent versions (Note: Moodle does not function well in Safari) - Word or PDF software ONLY (no other extensions) - Scanning software - - checked within 24 hours Assignment Scheduling Grading Breakdown - on the point system A range of Quizzes - point timed values Multiple choice, Matching, True/False. Different questions have differing values. You will have two chances to take the test. The system will AVERAGE the two grades. The system will show correct and incorrect responses but will not provide correct answers. 25 points Cornell Notes Detail on the notes is included under the Cornell Notes section in this syllabus, but basically: You MUST use the Cornell Note form (and no variation of the form) to record key evidence that you have reviewed all assigned materials. This includes the textbook, powerpoints, videos, audio, and any additional reading material). You may type or handwrite your notes. You will submit notes of 3-5 pages (for typed; 4-7 pages handwritten) for each assigned chapter following the Cornell format - each section must include a summary with a minimum of 10 sentences. I have included in this syllabus instructions and an excellent example of responsive Cornell Notes. You must follow this format. Any deviation from this form (whether in formatting or content) will result in lost points. You may NEVER have the exact same notes as another student even one sentence that includes the same exact 3

Varying point value Varying point value Alternative Assignments Startup Materials and Evidence of Habits of Mind diction and syntax will be considered plagiarism and you will be expelled from the course without a refund. Moodle will only open PDFs or Word Documents for these submissions. Some of the above may be replaced by other assignments. Therefore it is critical that you look closely at the work to be submitted. All required materials for this class are graded, including attendance at the mandatory meeting, a contract showing you understand the requirements of the course by reading the syllabus, and completion of a first day questionnaire. Your dedication and time spent working on the course is also assessed. Go to next page 4

Cornell Notes You MUST use format Cornell Notes as outlined any variation or deviation from this format will be marked down. You may type or write out your notes. Keep in mind that Cornell Notes help you study for the quiz. It is important to understand that You must do your own work. Even if you have worked with a partner, you cannot have even one unquoted sentence that is the same. This is plagiarism and will result in expulsion from the course. It is critical that you look at the assignment. Sometimes you will read the textbook; sometimes the chapter will be covered by a powerpoint only. If you do the wrong assignment, you will receive no credit. Only include what is assigned (please note Reading Assignments in blue at the start of each unit). You will do Cornell Notes for each assigned chapter Cornell Notes DO NOT INCLUDE EVERYTHING OFFERED ON THE PAGE. The challenge especially as you move through the larger assignments is for you to filter out what is not as important and to include only the major information. The notes reflect ALL assigned materials, including textbook readings, powerpoints, videos, excerpts, art, and audio. Make sure you include the names of each of these sections. o With supplemental material, it is important that you present it with the same detail and gravity as the major reading. Don t just say this is about the French Revolution. Provide the points that you learned from the video. Make sure your commentary is complete. Never write a bunch of pictures, rather write about how, say, the video reflects on the time. o Make sure you look at all assignments. If something will not work or not open, contact the instructor immediately. Make sure you review the Key Themes and Ideas at the beginning of each chapter so that you understand the major focus of this unit. Write notes accordingly. Additionally make sure you: FOLLOW EXAMPLES IN THIS PACKET these are highly responsive, show the exact formatting, organization, division by themes, spacing, font size and style, and illustrate a highly responsive summary (in both content and format) Use the template included at the very top of the Moodle page. It is exact according to margins and font style and size. o Stick to the 3-5 page limit (4-7 for handwritten). You will be marked down for work that is unresponsive to these limits. o Times New Roman font only o Minimum 11 point font/maximum 12 point o Student name, chapter name and number, and date only has to appear on the first page of your notes o Textbook The titles and headlines that go to the left division of the notes must follow the format of the textbook. 11

You will include the name of the chapter at the top of your notes (in your textbook, this title is in purple ink) You will then move to the subsection level including the name and number of this section. (in your textbook, this title is in YELLOW ink) Then you will go to the major titles of each of these subsections (in your textbook, this title is in RED ink) YOU DO NOT HAVE TO INCLUDE THE TITLES IN GREEN. However, you will not be marked down if you do, especially if it helps your organization. Make sure you write the titles as written in the material o For powerpoints your challenge will be to come up with your own titles and to organize your work by the divisions you see. Let the actual organization of the powerpoint inform your choices. Provide a summary that is a minimum of 10 sentences and that covers the Big Ideas. You want to make sure this section shows the chapter as an overview of important and major themes. Things like patterns, contrasts, comparison, major personalities. NOTE: This is not a repetition of detail already in your notes themselves, rather it is you showing your understanding of the important ideas of this chapter on a more global scale o Make sure this summary that is in your own words. Absolutely no lifting words (three or more) from another source without citing (results in a 0 for the assignment and, for repeated violation, dismissal from the course) Outline the information in the order it appears on the Moodle site Use sentence fragments, abbreviations, and lots of air this will make info easy to access Make sure the data on the right side lines up with the heading on the left this makes reviewing the work for completion much easier. Handwritten material is legible. If I can t read it, I won t. Omit all blank pages Include page numbers Include all sources in your notes: o Textbook reading o PowerPoints o Videos Save these notes in Word or a PDF. Mac users, please do a Save As to convert Pages to a pdf (you can also use the Export feature) Send Notes as ONE document not in pieces. (uploading instructions follow) Top Five Priorities of Cornell Notes - Don t plagiarize - Read instructions - Follow formatting - Filter the information provide what is important (not everything) - Provide a 10-sentence minimum summary on the last page of your notes focusing on big ideas and major themes for this collection of information 12

Quizzes Important: To ensure your quiz is properly displayed and functioning, you must use an updated version of just about any browser but Safari, even on a Mac.. If for some reason you experience technical issues while taking a quiz, DO NOT ask me to erase the effort. You get a second chance to take the quiz, and the first attempt does not count against you. Quizzes are designed to test your knowledge of text, PowerPoints and some videos. They appear at the end of most but not all chapters. They take the form of multiple choice and matching. A NOTE ON TESTING AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY. You must follow the rules of academic integrity as detailed in the Student Handbook. You are on your honor. Please be aware that I will be looking for any disturbing patterns in journal responses and Cornell Note content. I also want to alert you that the system provides Activity Reports I can see if you viewed or read the required material. If I see you doing well on quizzes and answering prompts without the benefit of looking at required material, I will alert you to my concerns and/or mark you down. You will be graded on Thoroughness so make sure you open and review all documents (75 points). You may not submit any work that is not your own, as in you have originated the material. Please note that technology allows us to detect original creation dates, therefore no borrowing from current or former students. I will alert you to any inconsistencies or troubling behaviors once, after that, further violations may result in a 0 for that assignment or expulsion from class. You will have two attempts to take a quiz; the system will automatically record THE AVERAGE of these two scores. Once completed, the system will show you which responses are correct and which are faulty. IT WILL NOT, HOWEVER, GIVE YOU THE CORRECT ANSWERS. Your second attempt may include some of the same questions or some new questions. BE PREPARED. Please make sure that you follow the order of the class do not skip around as some questions, journals, or quizzes build on earlier work. Technology Moodle is a fairly intuitive environment, but it does have some tricky features. Therefore, success in this class requires a basic knowledge and skill at navigating a software environment. A few guidelines for success include: Use Mozilla Firefox or Chrome as your browser (it won t give you pop-up warnings) 29

Read all instructions Do all quizzes in one sitting (though test says save without submitting you only have the allotted time CUMULATIVELY) Do not open tests if you are not going to take them this counts as an attempt and will become part of your averaged score. I will not waive this attempt Only submit documents in PDF or word formats I will not look at anything else Only submit documents through Moodle do not send them to our s, as I will not look at them. Cornell Notes your notes for that chapter must be on a single document (PDF or Word). If you make a mistake, the system will allow you to resubmit. Communication As this is an online class YOU MUST CHECK YOUR DAILY and respond to my inquiries within 24 hours. Because Moodle may prove a bit difficult in the beginning and because I can t possibly cover all possible scenarios and questions in this document, I welcome your inquiries. Especially when: You have a technical concern You need clarity on instructions A Final Word on Success I appreciate the rigor of the task you ve chosen for yourself. Please know that I am here to facilitate your success. Some key ways you can achieve success on your own are to: Manage your time make a schedule for yourself so you do not save the work until the last minute Work with independence advocate for yourself Form a partnership with your partner and work as a team but DO NOT SHARE WORK or plagiarized one another. Embrace the rules of academics syntax, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, all count Read instructions and prompts in full and respond thoroughly Follow the rules outlined in this document; do not ask for exceptions to these rules Ask questions they are essential. 30
