Everyone is fascinated by her, a young girl ahead of her time, intelligent, charming, independent, and alarmingly beautiful. Twenty-five years later in Miami two horrendous murders happen on the same night. The only link between the two is an unknown symbol that appears next to the bodies. The symbol was recently discovered in a cave in Cuba, where an arqueologcial discovery had been made that alters the history of the Spanish conquest in the Caribbean: next to an indigenous sculpture and a coded manuscript are the remains of a European who was buried with the honors of an Native American chief. The girl who was rescued from the sea two decades earlier is now a cryptologist who travels to the island to help resolve the mystery of the manuscript that seems to date back to the era of the discovery of America. The investigation won t be easy in this convulsive and chaotic Havana of the near future, above all because the girl will need to deal with her own secret: the presence of a voice that only she can hear. 5 Women s Fiction EL HOMBRE QUE ARREGLABA LAS BICICLETAS (The Man Who Fixed Bicycles) by Ángel Gil Cheza World Spanish rights: Suma (Santillana Group); translation rights: Santillana c/o IECO 256 pages, 207,821 characters; March 2014 Originally self-published on Amazon, this emotional novel made its way to the top ten and remained there for over three months! To whom would we write the last letter of our lives? The final will of a noir novel author brings together his widow, their daughter and a previous Irish girlfriend who he had left without any explanation at all- to spend a summer together in his house on the Mediterranean coast, a beach house with a bicycle workshop next door. The Man Who Fixed Bicycles is a summer that glimmers in some corner of our collective imagination. There are novels that we can t really describe; it would be like trying to explain a kiss before actually giving the kiss itself. Ángel Gil Cheza is sucessful in infecting us with his singular way of seeing the world, a world in which every word, every gesture, every moment, takes on vital importance. Reviews: This novel took me completely by surprise. Ángel Gil Cheza brilliantly describes the thoughts, feelings, and vital attitudes of his characters. There aren t hardfast rules for painting feelings with words and Gil Cheza achieves this with the mastery of Javier Marías or Usé Lahoz, he s able to move the reader deeply. This is a work of great literary quality that forecasts great things for Ángel Gil Cheza s future. Letras para usted This is a novel that won t leave anyone indifferent. What would you do if an attractive guy appears out of the blue claiming to be an angel and he wants to help you solve what will soon be the biggest problem in your life? While she endeavors to hang a wreath of flowers on a gravestone she receives a visit from Armand, a man who, beyond being a total hunk, says he s an angel. His mission: to offer Lourdes the possibility of compensating for her bad karma from her past lives mainly the one in which she was Cleopatra- and recovering the four corners of her existence, and especially, the love of her daughter. 7 Inspirational Fiction WHISHNA. EL JARDIN DE LAS LUCES: Una fábula de los tiempos de Buda (Whishna. The Garden of Light: A fable from the times of Buddha) by J.D. Kaplan World Spanish rights: Obelisco, 102 pages, 30,505 words, January 2015 The Garden of Light is a fable that finds its purest inspiration in the works of the great Rudyard Kipling, not only because of the exoticism, or the anthropomorphic characterization of animals, like the Jungle Book, but also because of the powerful sense of mystery that pervades it, the search for a primeval mysticism, sometimes almost shamanic, that endures, apart from the whirl of the world, in this mythical place, hidden in the jungle, that is the secret Garden of Light. It is also the story of a journey of initiation, Whishna s, the heir of a kingdom in Hindustan and a pilgrim of the Dharma during the time that Buddha was spreading his doctrine. The world of dreams and wakefulness are interconnected here, as well as the world of the imagination with daily reality. The adventures lived by a young eagle, who fell out of his nest before learning to fly, will help the prince with his vital transformation, with his final ethical choice. Basically paraphrasing Kipling, or in homage to him, this fable could also have been titled: The Man Who Could Not Not Rule. The author: J.D. Kaplan is the pseudonym of an author who has published five books in Spain, novels and short story collections, with great recognition from the critics. He opted to use a pseudonym for The Garden of Lights in order to explore a new facet of his writing, that begins with this novel, and that will undoubtedly continue with other books. Fiction

10 Literary Fiction EL HOMBRE BICOLOR (The Two-Tone Man) by Javier Tomeo World Spanish rights: Anagrama, 120 pages, February 2014 Hermógenes W. s right eye is sky blue and his left is emerald green. Hermógenes W. is a Second Category inspector for the Special Squad of Regional Tax Collectors. Hermógenes W. is a civil servant with twotone eyes who works for the government of a country in crisis. His mission: to collect money from tax-payers in the city of Boronburg. When the tax collector gets off the train at his destination no one is there to meet him at the station, it s completely deserted and when he arrives at his hotel by foot there is no one to be found at the reception desk. He installs himself in a room and, from his window, contemplates the empty streets and, on the horizon, the castle belonging to a Count who was rumored to be a vampire and left many years ago. From afar a dog barks and another responds; the only sign of life in this city without citizens. He phones City Hall and a voice informs him: There is no one here ; it hangs up. When night falls he can see that not a single light is turned on in any of the windows. Is this a ghost town? Did all of the inhabitants flee from an imminent catastrophe? Has there been an epidemic? Is this just all a game put his nerves on edge? We find ourselves in Tomeo s territory: an obsessive narrative, an outlandish protagonist, a mysterious setting, a comical yet disturbing tone, echoes of Kafka, his surveyor and castle The publication of this brief posthumous novel is the best tribute possible to one of the most eccentric and powerful narrators in contemporary Spanish fiction. A writer with a voice and literary universe that are unequaled, singular and exceptional. With his towering height and his enormous potato face, Tomeo assumed his oddness with resignation The power that odd people like him have, the appeal that they give off, is mainly rooted in their peripheral position. He s remembered as a friendly monster. But as César Aira said, the monster is a species that is made up of one single individual, it s the only species without any possibility of reproducing, and so remains, unique for all eternity, absolutely historical, absolutely modern. This is Tomeo s privilege (Ignacio Echevarría, El Cultural). EL FIN DE LOS DINOSAURIOS (The End of the Dinosaurs) by Javier Tomeo World Spanish rights: Páginas de espuma, 200 pages, January 2014 The micro short stories in this collection are accompanied by texts written by three Tomeo experts: a prologue by Daniel Gascón, an epilogue by Ismael Grasa and an apprendix, really a dictionary, put together by Antón Castro that brings together the terms most used in the universe of Javier Tomeo. From the collection: Literature can be a way to protest against any situation. First come the poets and then those who fight with their hands. It s always been this way. Monsters are difficult exercises of love. [ ] I ve never gotten over monsters, the monster is a metaphor, it s a way to inner perfection, it s there so we can learn to love it. The author: Javier Tomeo, ( ) a graduate in Law and Criminology (University of Barcelona), started his prolific writing career in the 60s, and in the 80s established himself as one of the best and most personal contemporary Spanish writers. His books, translated into 15 languages, has been made into films and plays at international theatres. His work has received several literary awards and was praised by Roberto Bolaño, who declared himself a devoted reader of Tomeo s books. From the author, Rafael Santandreu My relationship with psychology is like a love story and I can confess that, when I graduated in 1992, I didn t really believe in the power of psychology in terms of truly changing people. It wasn t until a few years later, when I went back to study the work of the famous psychologist Albert Ellis, that I began to comprehend the impact that a very thought itself can exercise on a person s mind. I tried it out myself and, with bit of mental work, I was able to change my emotions. This psychology worked! Afterwards, as a therapist, I had the opportunity to witness much more radical changes in my patients. This book aims to turn you into a much stronger and happier person. It brings to together all of the mechanisms discovered by modern psychology to transform ourselves. Personally, I m not a big fan of dime a dozen self-help books; I only read them when they re based on hard evidence. Here I m offering only instruments that have proven effectiveness and I can assure that that 80% of my patients who have followed therapeutic combination have definitively left behind depression, anxiety, obsessions and exaggerated fears. Cognitive therapy is the most scientific and rigorous psychology existing today. It s so rigorous that it s similar to physical exercise: if you go to the gym and work out following your trainer s guidelines, muscle growth is absolutely guaranteed. The mind works in a similar way and I can assure you that this is the most important part of the human body; it s the central computer that monitors everything. It s well worth it to give your mind a work out to make your mind work: it will reward you in every single aspect of your life. The author: Rafael Santandreu is one of the most prestigious psychologists in Spain. The main enemy of the psychologist is what we call neuroticisim, meaning the art of making ourselves miserable through self-inflicted mental torture. Depression, anxiety and obsession are our primary opponents and when we let ourselves keep trapped by them we lose the ability fully live our lives. Life is for enjoyment: loving, learning, discovering and this we can fully only do once we ve gotten over our neurosis (or fear, which is the main symptom). Rafael Santandreu, also author of the book THE SCHOOL OF HAPPINESS (RBA, Barcelona 2009), is a psychologist specialized in cognitive therapy. Following the model of one of the great masters, Wayne Dyer, author of the acclaimed Your Erroneous Zones: Step-by-Step Advice for Escaping the Trap of Negative Thinking and Taking Control of Your Life, Santandreu offers us a clear, concrete and practical method for achieving psychological change, improving our relationships with ourselves and overcoming all of the negative thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that needlessly make us miserable. Rafael was also chief editor of MENTE SANA magazine, a leading psychology magazine in Spain. Non-fiction

15 Women s Popular Psychology: Aging TAN FRESCAS: Las nuevas mujeres mayores del siglo xxi (So Refreshing: The New Mature Woman in the 21st Century) by Anna Freixas with prologue by Rosa Regàs World Spanish rights: Contextos collection, Paidós imprint (Planeta), 336 pages, April 2013 Essential reading for every woman over 40. This is the first book targeting the extensive collective of older women who, in contrast with previous generations, still maintain active and creative lives. A text that helps to break away from the social taboos that apply to older people, in particular women, who are socially considered invisible once they ve turned fifty years old. A new generation of older women are beginning to surface: these are the daughters of rock & roll and feminism, and today they are sixty, seventy, and eighty years old. They have broken a plethora of molds, they re independent, active and exigent, and the former stereotype of the demure older woman just doesn t fit. In this refreshing and necessary book, the author breaks down a host of previously unspoken about themes and situations that mature women experience today. The author: Anna Freixas, (Barcelona) lives in Cordoba Spain. She has a PhD in Psychology from the University of Barcelona and is now a retired professor from the University of Cordoba. Her lines of research and her publications fundamentally deal with women and aging, co-education, and feminism. The author has published with Paidós previously NUESTRA MENOPAUSIA (Our Menopause) in 2007, and co-wrote with Clara Coria in 2005 LOS CAMBIOS EN LA VIDA DE LAS MUJERES as well as ABUELAS, MADRES, HIJAS (Grandmothers, Mothers, and Daughters)in 2005 with Icaria Editorial. 16 Popular Psychology DE ILUSIONES TAMBIÉN SE MALVIVE (Living on Hope Alone is Also Just Scraping By) by Xavier Guix World Spanish rights: Ediciones B - Catalan rights: Ediciones B 288 pages, May 2014 Has appeared in the top 10 on bestsellers lists for print non-fiction and in the top 100 of Amazon Spain s Kindle Store for Essay. This is a book for lovers of psychology, for seekers of authenticity, for those of who want to live with awareness. The process of self-knowledge and the search for our deepest, most spiritual nature, is a path filled with challenges which this book explores in depth. Our reading allows us to delve into the construction of our identity, into the illusory states of the mind and into the power of our beliefs, as well as the dissatisfaction and emptiness produced by our exaggerated expectations of life, of others, and of ourselves. The way to get rid of ongoing false hope and self-deception does not consist in denying yourself any hope at all, but rather in getting to know yourself. Xavier Guix Here we have the Xavier Guix s most mature book, the book we ve been waiting for. Few authors would be capable of integrating psychology and spirituality with such accessibility and precision. Javier Melloni, author of El Deseo esencial This book invites us to daydream, to practice clarity, and not to give up on life. Francesc Torralba, author of El valor de ser uno mismo Perhaps it s correct that living on hope alone is also just scraping by, not truly living. But who wants to just scrape by, to not live fully? I ve never met anyone who, like me, is not looking looking for the way to live fully, with peace and tranquility. To love and be loved. Xavier Guix The author: Xavier Guix has a degree in psychology and is specialized in communication and Neurolinguistic Programming. He works as a therapist as well as teacher at the business school EADA, giving courses on leadership and personal growth. He likewise gives conferences worldwide and appears on the radio and TV. Xavier Guix is considered one of the most important Spanish authors of personal growth books. His books have been published with great success in many Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, with publishers including Pergaminho, Sinais do fogo, and Lua de papel in Portugal and Ciranda in Brazil. 18 Creativity LA RECONQUISTA DE LA CREATIVIDAD: Cómo recuperar la capacidad de crear que llevamos dentro (Reconquering Our Creativity: How to Recover Our Innate Capacity to Create) by Fernando Trías de Bes World Spanish rights: Conecta (imprint of Penguin Random House), 144 pages (approx.); words (approx.), May 2014, final ms available in April 2014 Creativity has no end, it has no limits at all beyond those which life itself establishes. When life is over, creativity will also end. But while there s life, creativity will continue to exist. And this, because we are intelligent and living, breathing human beings, is great news. Creativity is an ability innate to the human condition. This is the point of departure for Fernando Trías de Bes s reflections in Reconquering Our Creativity. The act of creating is an inseparable part of our existence. Nevertheless, as our lives advance we progressively lose the impulse of this ability. Fear of making mistakes, the tyranny of logic, our educational systems and protocols as well as routines produce efficient, well-adjusted individuals but these circumstances lead us to progressively limit our capacity to create. The good news is that creative ability remains latent inside of us and can be rediscovered. Fernando Trías de Bes offers us a series of practical tools for reconquering our capacity to create, including the identification and eradication of obstacles and inhibitors of the creative process as well as a series of stimulators for creativity. The author: Fernando Trías de Bes (1967) is a writer and economist. He was born and raised and currently lives in Barcelona. He is the author of many prize winning essays in the fields of economics and business such as Marketing Lateral (2003), La buena suerte (2004), El vendedor de tiempo (2005), El libro negro del emprendedor (2007), El hombre que cambió su casa por un tulipán (2009), Innovar para ganar (2011) and El gran cambio (2013). And he is also the author of novels and short stories: Relatos absurdos (2006), Palabras bajo el mar (2006), El coleccionista de sonidos (2007), La historia que me escribe (2008), Tinta (2011), Mil Millones de Mejillones (2010), illustrated by Toni Batllori. Many of his non-fiction titles as well as his novels are regularly published into a plethora of countries and some of his books have been translated into over 40 languages. He is an ongoing collaborator with the financial supplements for the La Vanguardia and Diari ARA newspapers. 19 Culinary Essay MUERTE A LA CARTA by Andrés Madrigal & Eric Frattini Spanish ms available in early Cover Image Coming Soon The definitive book that delves into historical figures Last Suppers or last meals. When we hear about the Last Supper what usually comes to mind is da Vinci s painting of Christ s last supper, where he announces that one of his disciples, seated beside him, will betray him. It s said that from that moment on, the last meal that a condemned man has is called his Last Supper. Conquistadores, messiahs, soldiers, emperors, presidents, ocean liners, gangsters, serial killers, mafiosos, actors, writers, dictators, actresses, musicians, Popes, space shuttles, politicians, drug traffickers, athletes, princesses, planes and even a restaurant, all have one thing in common: their Last Supper. The 50 celebrities that appear in this book ate all kinds of things during their last supper, lunch, or dinner, from complicated dishes like roasted fish with mango, grilled eel, roasted chicken with chestnut cream, or poached salmon with a mousseline sauce to a simple roastbeef sandwich, half a bottle of red wine, or a simple banana muffin. The majority of them had no idea that this would be the last meal they would have. Abraham Lincoln didn t know who John Wilkes Booth was when he had dinner with his wife, Mary Todd, that afternoon of the 15th of April, 1865 at the White House, a dinner of roasted chicken stuffed with chestnuts, yams, and baked cauliflower with cheese. Nor did John F. Kennedy know who Lee Harvey Oswald was when he had breakfast with his wife Jackie the morning of the 22nd of November 1963 at the Texas Hotel: poached eggs, bacon, Linden Dale goat cheese, toast, raspberry jam, orange juice and coffee. For the Non-fiction

20 16th and 35th Presidents of the United States, these were the last foods they ate before their assasinations. On a different note, the murderers Peter Kürten, Adolf Eichmann, Perry Smith, Richard Hickock, Ted Bundy or Aileen Wuornos, who also are included in this book, would all eat their last meals in a cell on Death Row in different prisons in the US, Israel, and Germany. The authorities of these countries granted them, murderers, a last meal, something that they did not grant their victims. What the 1635 victims of the RMS Titanic, the 36 victims of the Hindenburg, the 7 of the Challenger, the 109 of the Concorde, the 32 victims of Costa Concordia, didn t know is that one night they were going to have their Last Supper. Nor did Alexander Magnum, Napoleon or Rasputin know that mixing good food with poison was not the best for their health, and even less with drugs which is what happened to Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, John Belushi, Heath Ledger, and Michael Jackson. Poisoned, shot down, crucified, drowned, beheaded, burned to death, crashed, hung, poisoned, electrocuted, or dead by their own hand, the truth is the 50 famous people that make up this book all have one thing in common: they decided to eat before boarding Charon s boat.
