The concerns within the Illinois Department of Corrections are the issue of medication - IDOC uses a vendor to provide medication/medical services and there have been issues in the past with the vendor's formulary (and access to MAT). Also, the Department is more interested in MAT for parolees in the community for a number of different reasons Illinois Dr. Louis Shicker, Agency Medical Director louis.shicker@doc.illinois.gov No No No No Indiana John Dallas, RN, RVP jdallas@cmsstl.com No Yes No No NA NA Kansas Roger Haden, Deputy Secretary RogerH@doc.ks.gov No No No No Treatment for Alcohol Dependent Inmates Survey.xls (MO) Page 2 of 10 Last Updated: 10/20/10 at 5:32 PM

6 ASCA Responses: Treatment for Alcohol Dependent Inmates Survey (October 2010) 7. How are you funding the Assisted Treatment? 8. Comments: Alabama Arizona Colorado The Alabama Department of Corrections receives only sentenced inmates after trial. This Department is not part of a detainee system (jail) The Arizona Department of Corrections offers medication assisted treatment to opiate addicted inmates to assist with detox only. ADC does not offer ongoing MAT or MAT for other substances. Inmates experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms from are transported to hospital for any necessary medical treatment. Delaware Included in overall Department budget for offender medical services The Delaware Department of Correction does not use Vivitrol however if an offender enters our system and he or she is taking Naltrexone, we will continue them for the short term and through detox. If the offender will only be in our custody for a brief period, we will continue them on the medication and make a formal referral to an outside agency prior to their release. 7 ASCA Responses: Treatment for Alcohol Dependent Inmates Survey (October 2010) 7. How are you funding the Assisted Treatment? 8. Comments: Illinois Currently, the pilot program is being funded through a small grant and we are hoping that with our participation with the NIDA study, we might be able to expand the scope of MAT within IDOC The Department is moving toward the concept of using MAT as a viable treatment option for those identified as appropriate for this service. Illinois Indiana NA Kansas The information above relates to the treatment programs provided by the Kansas Department of Corrections only and does not pertain to other substance abuse treatment programs within the state. 8 ASCA Responses: Treatment for Alcohol Dependent Inmates Survey (October 2010) 7. How are you funding the Assisted Treatment? 8. Comments: Louisiana Done by prison medical/mental health staff so through state general fund allocated to DOC. We screen at intake for chemical dependency and have a policy for chemical detoxification. Offenders with mental health needs are monitored on a regular basis throughout their incarceration and we do have an extensive discharge planning process which takes this monitoring into account while figuring out future need for services. Most of the offenders spend few years in prison (? forced remission) and maybe that's why chemical treatment for addiction is not a common occurrence. (Continued substance abuse therapy after release is a big part of the discharge planning.) Massachusetts NA Michigan Mississippi Montana Nebraska None Treatment for Alcohol Dependent Inmates Survey.xls (MO) Page 8 of 10 Last Updated: 10/20/10 at 5:32 PM
9 ASCA Responses: Treatment for Alcohol Dependent Inmates Survey (October 2010) 7. How are you funding the Assisted Treatment? 8. Comments: Nevada Inmates go through detox in county jails prior to coming to state prison in Nevada. Nevada does have substance abuse programs but they do not involve medication assisted treatment. New York State NYS DOCS only accepts inmates that have been detoxed from Alcohol/Opiates except for pregnant women. North Carolina Ohio n/a Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island It is part of our overall budget. Like you, we are considering this, but are unsure what the long-term effectiveness will be. This is a large state and liaison with an outside provider upon release is likely to be problematic. Largely for this reason, we do not maintain releasees on Methadone or Naltrexone. We provide short term detoxification with methadone for inmates who experience severe opiate withdrawal. Additionally, we provide methadone maintenance services to pregnant women who are addicted to opiates. Women are required to detoxify from methadone once they have given birth. 10 ASCA Responses: Treatment for Alcohol Dependent Inmates Survey (October 2010) 7. How are you funding the Assisted Treatment? 8. Comments: South Dakota Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the survey. Tennessee Texas West Virginia Wyoming Offenders usually spend a period of time in county jails and have undergone detox prior to being received by the TDCJ; however, if the occasion arises, we will detox acutely. Inmates complete detox while housed in jails, prior to arrival in prisons. This response reflects practices in prisons only.
