1 ASIAN ARTS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Promoting the expression of cultural diversity Chaoyang University of Technology, Taiwan Department of Early Childhood Development and Education Department Chair: Dr. Ni [1]
2 ASIAN ARTS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Introduction The department of Early Childhood Development and Education of Chaoyang University of Technology offers an international course on Asian Arts in Early Childhood Education. In this course students from all over the world meet at our 21 st century university campus to become proficient in several Asian art forms from East, and South-East Asia, like calligraphy, paper cutting, theater and music, et cetera. During sessions on the arts, led by internationally renowned scholars, students develop and/ or deepen their skills and knowledge regarding these several art forms. This international course focuses on early childhood development and education. Students will therefore attend classes on developmental psychology, pedagogy and teaching methodology regarding early childhood education. Asian arts and Early Childhood Development and Education are studied in conjunction in conducted applied research projects, but also during student teaching in preschools, kindergartens and elementary schools. As most Taiwanese people speak Mandarin Chinese, Chinese lessons are offered. However, Chaoyang University of Technology is an international oriented university in which English is used as an important foreign language. In order to communicate with children in schools, English as a foreign language will be provided. [2]
3 ASIAN ARTS The Asian arts have been object of fascination and admiration in the Western world for centuries. The silks of China and India, Taiwanese porcelain, lacquers from Japan and jade and ivory jewelry and ornaments have featured among the treasures of wealthy and powerful throughout the world. Asian arts objects are often considered mysterious and exotic. They have been collected and displayed in palaces and homes, listened to and looked at in theaters and on DVD. Over the last hundred years the study of Asian arts has grown significantly. Also the study of (early) arts education has grown over the last fifty years. Young children are more and more seen as discoverers, researchers, artists, entrepreneurs and scientist. Children are predisposed executing several art forms. The question is how we, as adults, can create environments that make it possible for children to explore their capacities. In this international course on Asian Arts in Early Childhood Education students get the opportunity to explore their own capacities and learn to stimulate young children through the arts. Art forms above: 1 Taiwanese Puppetplay 2 Malaysian Kite 3 Balinese Gamalan [3]
