2 Low Tech Solutions for Smaller Businesses What is Green ICT? What is ICT? : Phones, PC s & monitors, printers and copiers, servers, networks (routers, modems, cables etc.) Technology we use daily to communicate and work, conduct business, store customer records, host websites etc

3 Low Tech Solutions for Smaller Businesses For smaller businesses ideally need to look at Saving Money (short and long term) By reducing capital costs, reducing running costs reducing waste Low Hanging Fruit : No Brainers.but are also easy to miss

4 Green ICT So Green ICT or sustainable ICT is the same concept except the manufacture, use and disposal of equipment has less of an impact on the environment and cost less to manufacture, purchase, operate and dispose. * Uses less energy to make (smaller manufacturing and purchase costs) less energy to operate (smaller electricity bill) Last longer and are smaller in size (smaller disposal costs) *Relative to brand, model circumstance

Smaller, lighter ; 20kg s to 3kgs made of less toxic materials; fewer acids, precious metals, harmful materials etc. are made from recycled and recyclable materials consolidated pieces of technology : MFD s, virtualised servers, stored in cloud allow for mobility and flexibility : Reports sustainable information

6 Examples of Green ICT in practice Printing & Copying : Using a MDF and printing and copying double sided saves on purchase costs, energy and waste disposal costs. Example UL saved 40,000 in A4 paper purchase costs and 10,000 in waste paper disposal costs through double sided printing & copying and electronic means of communicating

7 Automatic Shutdown of Equipment Can be applied to PC s and monitors, Printers & Copiers, some servers, Timetabling of light & heat for classrooms PC Powerdown saved the Uni. of Liverpool 64,000 by automatically switching off student PC s when not in use. Leeds Met saved 1,000 s by time-tabling Light & Heat in lecture theatres

8 Video Conferencing VC-ing saves on travel costs, CO 2 emissions and time Don t need expensive equipment or software: Skype, BT Conference Call Meetme?, Powwownow, illuminate, are all free.

9 But Green ICT also helps you to do business more efficiently. Using technology to monitor and measure your energy use : Dashboards or energy monitors/ meters report energy use encourages staff to switch off equipment instantly engage in behavioural change continued savings.

10 Awareness Campaigns No-tech methods of improving sustainability and making savings 1. Circulate e mail to all staff in office explaining what your trying to achieve 2. Hangs posters in high traffic areas (water cooler, copier) 3. report waste findings 4. Set targets for reduction 5. Report savings 6. Offer rewards, staff competitions.
