Downsized and Unemployed Find New Start with Medical Training at Northeast Technical Institute Northeast Technical Institute (NTI), working in conjunction with state and federal workforce agencies, is providing these individuals with the tools, knowledge and opportunity to start again. Paid re training is available through MA, ME and NH agencies to those who qualify. Once the applicant is approved, they can attend one of a number of programs offered at NTI which provide entry into an industry that has remained strong and resilient. Healthcare jobs are plentiful, and according to the Department of Labor, many fields within this industry will continue to experience significant job growth well into the next decade. NTI is an approved training provider by the Department of Employment and Training in MA, ME, and NH. Priscilla Bergeron, who received assistance from the Valley Works Career Center and the NH Works Career Center, worked for Hewlett Packard for over 20 years. Not ready to retire but needing new skills, she completed the Health Information Specialist program and is now employed in the Medical Records department of Dana Farber in NH. Laurie Rennie and Carol Barnaby s training was made possible in part by the financial aid they received through WIA (Workforce Investment Act) funding through the Career Center. Both had worked in computer manufacturing before being downsized. Laurie completed both the Medical Office Assistant and the Medical Transcription programs. Carol earned her certificate in Medical Billing and Coding. Both are currently employed at Sleep Me, Inc. 3 Course Outlines Job Outlook CLINICALS CLC-001 Medical Assistant Skills (220 Hours - 22 Credits) Topics include: infection control and related OSHA guidelines; prepare patients/assist physician with examinations and diagnostic procedures; vital signs/mensuration; minor office surgical procedures; and electrocardiograms/holter monitor; collection/examination of specimens and CLIA regulations; phlebotomy (venipuncture/capillary puncture); urinalysis; and more. EXTERNSHIPS MED-EXT Clinical Externship (120 Hours - 4 Credits) Medical Assistant students perform 140 hours of work experience (externship). The externship consists of unpaid work experience which combines preparing patients and assisting the physician, blood draws, front office procedures, and more. Students will perform functions in a physician's office, hospital, clinic, or clinical laboratory site under the supervision of appropriate personnel. PTA-EXT Medical Laboratory Assistant Externship (80 Hours - 2 Credits) Medical Lab Assistant graduates may perform 80 hours of work experience (externship). The externship consists of unpaid work. A successful externship also counts as job experience, since many employers are asking for a certain amount of experience! Academic Information NTI Graduates will earn a Career Diploma for the successful completion of any program that meets or exceeds 600 hours in length. A Certificate will be awarded to students who successfully complete a program that is less than 600 hours in length. The body system, structures and functions and how they are used by specialists, as well as in diagnostic and treatment procedures are covered. SCI-104 Pharmacology for Health Occupations (50 Hours - 2 Credits) This course is designed to study drugs and their origin, nature and effects on living organisms. Understand prescription orders, skill in delivery and patient education. This course will also discuss the various routes of administration, which body system they effect, and drug classifications. SCI-099 Pharmacology for Pharmacy Technicians (100 Hours - 4 Credits) This course is designed to study drugs and their origin, nature and effects on living organisms. Understand prescription orders, skill in delivery and patient education. This course will also discuss the various routes of administration, which body system they effect and drug classifications. Schedule Full Time students arrange a schedule with Admissions Department to attend a minimum of 24 hours per week during classroom hours. Half Time students attend a minimum of 12 hours each week. MON-THU 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. FRI 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. SCI-135 Anatomy and Physiology I (75 Hours - 3 Credits) The anatomy and physiology of the human body is presented as an integrated science. Each major body system is described and analyzed to illustrate normal function as well as pathology. Topics include basic biochemical elements, skin, bone, muscles, the nervous system, the senses, and the endocrine system. SCI-136 Anatomy and Physiology II (75 Hours - 3 Credits) Anatomy and Physiology II (AP2) continues the introduction to the structure and function of the human body that was begun in Anatomy and Physiology 1 (AP1). Like AP1, AP2 uses the body systems approach and will cover the cardiovascular, lymphatic/immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. SCI-122 Pharmacy Practice (100 Hours - 4 Credits) This course places emphasis on the role the pharmacy technician plays in both institutional and community pharmacies. The duties and responsibilities of the pharmacy technician are expanding as the field of pharmacy grows and adapts to consumer demands. These new competencies are defined and explained, making the pharmacy technician fully prepared for the challenges of a career in the pharmacology industry. SCI-123 Pharmacy Calculations (75 Hours - 3 Credits) This course provides intensive practice in pharmacy math calculations, conversions, measurements, and applications of equations, including calculations required for realistic dose and solution preparations. The textbook also teach business terms and business math skills essential to pharmacy practice, as well as calculations to determine inventory and purchasing needs, profit margins, and inventory control. SCI-099 Pharmacology for Pharmacy Technicians (100 hours - 4 credits) The goal of the Pharmacology for Technicians course is to insure that students obtain a thorough comprehension of the basic pharmacological principles including medication knowledge, interactions, classifications and more. 3. Clinical Medical Assistant and Phlebotomy/EKG and Medical Lab Assistant Class Hours: Full Time: MON, TUE, THU 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Half Time: MON, TUE, THU 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Prerequisites Students must meet the following for acceptance into the program: Be interviewed by an admissions representative either at the campus or by telephone Posses a high school diploma or GED, or Pass a federally-approved examination, and Successfully pass an ABT exam CLINICAL STUDENTS: Submit proof of immunization against measles, mumps, rubella; those immunized with MMR vaccine before their first birthday be re-immunized with adult MMR* proof of a current negative TB (PPD) test; certified in CPR/AED/First Aid. Students will not be allowed to participate in an externship or receive job placement assistance without proper proof of those results. 16.

5 Course Outlines MEDICAL ADMINISTRATION HIT-109 Confidentiality of Health Information (50 Hours - 2 Credits) Ethical and legal rules concerning the confidentiality of health information is presented with particular emphasis on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Background material will include operation of the legal system and principles of legal liability. MRM-101 Medical Records Management (75 Hours - 3 Credits) This course prepares the student to work with commercial software used in the medical offices of today. Computerized medical billing, patient scheduling, and basic management concepts are just some of the topics that will be covered. The course also covers the development of organization, record storage, information management, and office administration skills. HIT 011 Medical Billing (75 Hours - 3 Credits) This course emphasized Physician-based medical billing. Clear and practical guidelines introduce the student to job responsibilities and basic processes comprising the medical billing world. Case studies and application tools offer practice on actual forms to build confidence in knowledge and skills. HIT-207 Medical Transcription (75 Hours - 3 Credits) Emphasis will be placed on development of accuracy, speed, chart notes and the following reports: medical knowledge of consultation, history and physical examination, special procedure, operative, discharge summary, and ER. In addition, the student will receive constant review of grammar and punctuation, and the use of reference materials. HIT-208 Advanced Medical Transcription (75 Hours - 3 Credits) This course is designed to further develop the student s ability to produce accurate, formatted documents. The course makes the transition from student to transcriptionist a smoother process through continual practice at an advanced level. HIT-203 Medical Coding (75 Hours - 3 Credits) This course covers the basics of coding, exploration of the ICD-9-CM and CPT manuals, examination of specialty areas such as cardiology and obstetrics/gynecology, radiology, pathology, and lab work. HIT-204 Advanced Medical Coding (125 Hours - 5 Credits) This course is designed to prepare students for employment as coders in physicians' offices, ambulatory centers, health care organizations, and insurance companies. The course features the more advanced concepts of ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCS, intro to ICD-10-CM, and reimbursement procedures. PROFESSIONAL STUDIES CSC-110 The Microcomputer and its Applications (75 Hours - 3 Credits) Students will learn to work with personal computers and using Microsoft Windows to manage information and run programs. The course then progresses to an introduction to the Internet; Internet basics; using Word ; using Excel ; using PowerPoint ; and practical exercises. 6 Definition of a Unit Credit Earning National Certification The School measures its programs in quarter credit hours: One quarter credit hour equals: a minimum of 10 lecture clock hours, or a minimum of 25 laboratory clock hours, or a minimum of 30 externship clock hours Every profession requires specialized skills. Not every employer knows that you have those skills. Certification is an investment in your career, your livelihood, your future. A clock hour is a minimum of 50 minutes of instruction within a 60 minute period of time in which lectures, demonstrations, laboratories, and similar class activities are conducted. 7 Pharmacy Technician Credits: 27 (28 Weeks Full Time 57 Weeks Half Time) Books/Software: $ for Textbooks Tuition: $5,800. A Pharmacy Technician is usually a pharmacist's right-hand man (or woman). They are exceptional listeners, are always alert, and pay attention to the finest details (like why there's an incorrect $0.83 charge on their phone bill). They are also very responsible filling the prescription with the right dose of the right pill could be the difference between making a patient feel a whole lot better, or a whole lot worse. The Pharmacy Technician training program at Northeast Technical Institute teaches the skills needed to gain employment as a Pharmacy Tech in either the hospital or retail setting. This course is versatile enough to be used by learners and medical professionals that have not previously performed phlebotomy procedures. The course also provides the student clinical experience in phlebotomy. The student must perform successful venipunctures, and capillary skin punctures. Upon successful completion of this course the student will have entry-level skills as a phlebotomy professional. This course also includes an introduction to intravenous infusion therapy. ECG / EKG This course covers patient preparation, performing and mounting of 12 lead, single channel EKG tracings. It is an introduction to the cardiovascular system and related terminology. Emphasis is placed on basic rhythm identification and possible disease states. Professional Development for Allied Health This course prepares students to enter and perform in a professional manner in the health care industry. HIPAA, Career Development, and Diversity in the Workplace are just some of the topics covered. Phlebotomy / EKG Clinical Externship Phlebotomy / EKG Technician students may perform 80 hours of work experience (externship). The externship consists of unpaid work experience which combines blood draws and EKG work. A successful externship also counts as job experience, since many employers are asking for a certain amount of experience! If student is unable to perform externship due to classroom performance, schedule or travel conflict, student may take additional Medical Administration courses that total 4 credits or more to meet graduation requirements * Not including Externship 12.
