4 Innovation Virtual Worlds A virtual world is a computer-based environment designed for people to inhabit and interact via avatars. An avatar is computerized representation of the user. Many virtual worlds allow for multiple users, making it a great way for people from all over the world to interact in one place. It can be difficult getting everyone in the same place at the same time: with a virtual world there are no barriers to coming together. Many companies, such as Xerox, IBM, Cisco and Sun are exploring this fast growing area, experimenting with ways to talk to customers and to develop new products and services. These companies run training sessions, seminars and induction programs for their employees in virtual worlds, bringing everyone together without having to travel all over the world. Learning on the Move Mobile phones currently outnumber PCs by 3 to 1. Features, memory and capabilities are expanding at an amazing rate. Bite-size lessons, or navigable reference material can be accessed whenever and wherever. Android, iphones, and tablets offer large screen-size and touch-screen functionality, making it easy to take advantage of technology applications no matter where you are. Into the Blogosphere Social Networking sites, RSS feeds, downloadable podcasts, technical blogs the ways in which we are sharing information are mind-boggling. Communication is becoming less formal, information overload more alarming. Delivering the right information to the right people in the right way is now the decisive factor in determining how effective you are. There are no boundaries anymore. 5 How We Work Content Development and Language Services (CDLS) We are an integral part of Xerox Learning Services and can be thought of as a One Stop Shop for information delivery. We design and develop all forms of product documentation, from service manuals and support documentation to interactive computer-based applications and training materials. We also work with marketing teams in developing collaterals and communications such as product/ service/event specific websites, banners, microsites, portals and presentations. Comprehensive Expertise The CDLS division is made up of several teams: Web, Multimedia, Creative Design, Authoring and Technical Documentation. These teams bring together a group of knowledgeable people with a broad range of skills and experience from numerous fields, such as development, multimedia applications development, graphics design, illustration and animation, desktop publishing, video post-production, technical authoring and training, electro-mechanical engineering, customer/product support, localization and project management. We work closely with our customers to give them innovative solutions. We combine structured processes with technology to develop multimedia applications that give our customers the edge over the competition. What Do We Bring to the Party? 1. Built for localization Because we work so closely with our translation department, we know how to design and develop easily-localized versions of our documents, Websites and multimedia applications. We know that gives us the edge over the competition. Localization not only involves translation, but an in-depth understanding of cultural differences. We have an extensive image library to cater for localization needs and we can recommend imagery that may better suit a specific culture or country. Our e-learning programs and Web applivcations are excellent examples of how we can re-produce over 18 localized and translated versions from a single set of master templates. We make sure that everything is consistent as all the elements (images, animations) are reused, with only the translated content changing across the program. We can fully support most languages even some of the tricky ones, such as Arabic and Hebrew. 3.
