1 NORTHWOOD HIGH SCHOOL DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICATIONS CLASS OF Read all information carefully. 2. This is your opportunity to make a great impression. Make sure that your writing is legible and words are not misspelled before you turn in your application. 3. Be specific and thorough concerning extra-curricular activities, community service, leadership, and work experience. 4. Teacher evaluations are very important. Don t forget to distribute them to three teachers of your choice and check back with Mrs. Hill to make sure they have all been turned in. 5. Complete all information requested and turn all the pages of your application in one packet. Your return packet will not include the teacher evaluations. Teachers will turn student evaluations in directly to Mrs. Hill. If you need additional space in any category, you may attach a separate sheet of paper to your application packet. 6. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Clark or Mrs. Renner. All applications are due by Friday, February 8, 2013, by 3:30 p.m. Late applications will not be accepted. Completing this application does not guarantee students that they will receive a scholarship. 1
2 NORTHWOOD DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTIONS FOR THE CLASS OF 2013 BONACORSI FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship will be presented to a senior who will pursue a Bachelor Degree in Education. The recipient shall have maintained a 3.25 GPA or higher during his/her four year career at NWHS, and will enroll in a state university in Indiana. The recipient must have received a letter of acceptance from the university and be enrolled in the School of Education. (Elementary, Middle, or Secondary) While at NorthWood High School, the recipient must have participated in at least one extra curricular activity each of his/her last three years at NWHS. In addition, the recipient has been involved in leadership capacity such as Student Council, FFA, Band, Choir, Drama, Academic Super Bowl Teams, or captain of an athletic team. The recipient must have had some after school or summer work experience of hours per week. Finally, the recipient is to have demonstrated an ability to succeed, possess a positive attitude, and be perceived as a role model to his/her peers. This recipient will be a future teacher who will need these characteristics to motivate, lead and make a difference in the lives of students. BUTCH NINE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (Sponsored by the Nappanee Police, Fire Department and EMS) This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who plans to pursue a degree in law/law enforcement career, medical health related careers or fire service. CAPTAIN S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship shall be awarded to one male and one female athlete who have participated in at least two sports during their senior year. The students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Athlete must end the sport season in good standing. DANIEL AND ESTHER METZLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is based on scholastic achievements by a graduating senior enrolling in an Indiana college or university and pursuing a degree in education or business.
3 THE DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS FOUNDERS SCHOLARSHIP The Founders Scholarship is being presented as a reflection of why the NorthWood Chapter of DFS was initially created in The focus is to select a hard working student who will become a stable wage earner, a responsible citizen and a lifelong learner in adult life. This scholarship will be awarded to a NorthWood senior who best meets the following criteria: The recipient plans to enroll in a course of study that will lead to an Associate s degree or the completion of a one year Certified Program. The recipient is in the top 50% of his/her graduating class. The recipient participated in extra curricular programs while at NorthWood (Academics, agriculture, athletics, fine arts, etc.) The recipient has significant after school or summer work experience. The recipient has been recognized by the high school staff as a person who is compassionate and is committed to improving the lives of others. DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIPS The selection for these scholarships is based on the following criteria: Academics Attendance Extra curricular Activities Leadership Community Service Clubs Student Essay Teacher Evaluations Work Experience Phone a Thon Participation FAIRMONT HOMES, INC. SCHOLARSHIP This general scholarship will be awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement and potential of the student. THE JEREMIAH SCHOLARSHIPS This scholarship is so named to lift up Jeremiah 29:11 for I know the plans I have for you plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. The recipient should have academic potential and good moral character. Financial need will be considered. KELSEY MIKEL MEMORIAL YEARBOOK SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding senior who is an member of the yearbook staff and who is planning on attending college or technical school. The recipient must be in good standing with the logue staff and supervisor.
4 LOUIS EBY MEMORIAL/INTERRA CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded to a senior who plans to enroll in a post secondary institution, preferably with an interest in business related fields. The candidate must be in the top ½ of the graduating class. This applicant should demonstrate positive leadership, attitude, and citizenship qualities and show involvement in activities that would be compatible with the credit union People Helping People philosophy. MABELLE SEARER LEE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given by the family. The recipient is preparing to be an elementary teacher Preferably lives in Olive or Harrison Township Preferably has attended Wakarusa Elementary School NAPPANEE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN WAGING PEACE SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship recipient will be chosen based on the following criteria: Senior who during their high school years have performed random acts of kindness The student is a positive role model among his/her peers He/she is able to work at conflict resolutions in a peaceful way, exhibiting new ways of peace making This student has a willingness to make a difference in the wider community This scholarship will not be limited to a specific intended major NAPPANEE NOON KIWANIS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship recipient will be chosen based on the following criteria Minimum of 3.0 grade point average Accepted to a college or university with major declared Extra curricular activities: Athletics, Band, Choir, Student Council, etc. Strong character Community Service: Consideration will be given to Scout and or Key Club members if other qualifications are met. NAPPANEE ROTARY CLUB SCHOLARSHIP These scholarships are given to selected seniors and are based on need, scholastic standing and all around ability. Any student who is going to continue his/her education may apply. Applicants must rank in the upper 2/3 of their class and have a 3.5 GPA Has displayed his/her leadership qualities in and out of school
5 Is involved in community service (church, civic clubs, etc.) Additional criteria will include: Need, teacher evaluation, attendance and the completion of an application for Rotary Student of the Month which includes attending one luncheon at the Heritage House NAPPANEE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The recipients of these scholarships must meet the following criteria: NorthWood High School senior Recipient will be chosen from the Nappanee area Be active in their community groups, church and organizations Plan to study business at a 4 year college, junior college or technical school Priority will be given to students with a average GPA NTA ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship will be given to a senior enrolled in a college or university and pursuing an engineering degree. PSI IOTA XI SPEECH AND HEARING OR FINE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given to a graduating senior: Applicants must have a declared major in speech, therapy, art, drama/theatre or music Applicants must rank in the upper ½ of the graduating class Applicants must be accepted by a college or university that he/she chooses Applicants must possess good character, initiative, and desire THE RICHARD G. CALLANDER SCHOLARSHIP This $5, scholarship will be awarded to a NorthWood High School senior who will pursue a Bachelor s Degree in Business/Accounting and who best meets the following criteria: The recipient must have received a letter of acceptance from a four year Indiana state university and be enrolled in their college of School of Business. The recipient must have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 The recipient participated in extra curricular or leadership activities such as B.P.A., Student Council, FFA, Academic Super Bowl, Performing Arts or Athletics. The recipient is active in his/her community groups, church or other organizations. The recipient receives a favorable recommendation from his/her teachers one of whom must be in the NorthWood High School Business Department.
6 Applicants may reapply for continuance of this scholarship Recipients applying for the continuance of this scholarship must submit a copy of grade transcripts, reflecting a B average, and present a letter of good standing status from the institution or they are attending. $5, scholarship to be awarded over a 4 year period o Year 1 = $1, o Year 2 = $1, o Year 3 = $1, o Year 4 = $2, RAYMOND AND VERA MARTIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is based on the scholastic achievements of a graduating senior enrolling in an Indiana college or university and pursuing a business, engineering or technology degree. SEL AND FRANCES COPELAND SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship will be awarded to a senior planning to enroll in a 4 year education program. The student must have a minimum 3.2 GPA. Students enrolled at Manchester College will be given preference for this scholarship. WAKARUSA CHAMBER SCHOLARSHIP Citizen in the Wakarusa area Be active in local community groups and projects, church and social organizations Be proven as a good citizen and positive role model among peers Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA WAKARUSA LIONS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP One scholarship will be awarded to a senior who plans to enter a medical or health related career. The second scholarship will be awarded to a senior enrolled in a two year technical school program. The senior selected for the medical career Wakarusa Lions Club Scholarship is expected to meet each of the following criteria: The senior is enrolling in a bachelor degree program leading toward a medical career (doctor, nurse, radiologist, etc.) or a health related career (pharmacy, prosthetics, athletic trainer, etc.) The senior s high school academic record indicates he/she is likely to be successful in taking the necessary college course work leading toward the chosen medical career. The senior lives in the Wakarusa Elementary School attendance district.
7 The senior selected for the two year technical Wakarusa Lions Club Scholarship is expected to meet each of the following criteria: The senior is planning to enroll in a two year program leading toward a career in a technical field (computer information systems, database management, automotive technology, criminal justice, health care support, imaging sciences, surgical technology, etc.) The senior s high school academic record indicates he or she is likely to be successful in taking the necessary course work leading toward the chosen two year technical program. The senior lives in the Wakarusa Elementary School attendance district. If it is the judgment of the selection committee that no applicants are likely to be successful in a two year technical program, the selection committee may select a second applicant for a bachelors degree scholarship leading toward a medical career (doctor, nurse, radiologist, etc.) or a health related career (pharmacy, prosthetics, athletic trainer, etc.). WA NEE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is enrolled as an education major in a fouryear degree program. The applicant must meet the following qualifications: Applicant ranks in the upper 1/3 of the graduating class Possesses favorable attitudes, habits, and qualities of good citizenship Has the potential to succeed at the college/university level Additional selection criteria will include: grade point average, class rank, SAT scores and attendance Preference will be given to children of a WEA member. WILSON FAMILY COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who plans to continue his/her education. The candidate will have demonstrated a selfless commitment to community service in the Wa Nee area. ZETA NU CHAPTER OF TRI KAPPA SCHOLARSHIP These scholarships will be awarded to qualifying seniors who plan on furthering their education at a four year college or university. Recipient needs to obtain a minimum GPA of 3.0 Demonstrates strong character and have received positive teacher evaluations Preferably students are involved in activities and/or organizations outside the academic school day; whether participating in sports, performing arts, community service, or employment
