8 Student requests determine the number of sections for courses and budget allocations; so, if you do not register for it, you will not be able to get into the class later. Input your course numbers for electives carefully into Student Connect from your course request sheet. List alternates on your course request sheet but do not enter into Student Connect. Science and Social Studies have been preloaded as have the recommended placement for Math, English and World Language. If you have questions, call or your child s high school counselor. Submit your signed course request sheet to the office at your middle school by Monday, March 20, 2015.

9 NHS Graduation Requirements 1 semester =.50 credit Seminar (1 semester) =.25 credit can earn possible 2.0 credits of Seminar through HS 28.5 credits required to graduate A student is able to take a possible of 30.0 credits at NHS 9

13 COURSE SELECTIONS Counseling Department Your present circumstances don t determine where you can go; but merely determine where you start. ~ Nido Qubein

14 ENGLISH Required English 9 or Honors English 9 (2 semesters) English placement pre-loaded in MiStar Please Note: Teacher recommendation is required for Honors English 9. Students who are not recommended for Honors English 9 but demonstrate extremely strong skills in first semester of freshmen year will be encouraged to join Honors English 9 in second semester. English electives: Debate, Drama, Introduction to Journalism, Independent Studies in Literature and Speech. Please Note: electives do not meet the MMC English graduation requirements.

16 SCIENCE Required - Biology (2 semesters) Science electives: Geology (1 semester) and Astronomy and Meteorology (1 semester) 16

17 SOCIAL STUDIES Required - U.S. History (2 semesters) Social Studies elective: Big History (1 semester) This course covers historical change through the lenses of astronomy, chemistry, geology, philosophy, literature & other disciplines. It is designed for the curious student who wants to learn more about how we think about things. Designed for the more serious student with strong writing skills. 17

18 WORLD LANGUAGE Beginning with the Class of 2016, 2.0 credits of World Language are required for graduation. Choose between, French, German, and Spanish. A passing grade in both 7 th and 8 th grade language courses counts as 1.0 credit of World Language. 18

26 MYP Personal Project The topic for the project can be nearly anything that interests the student. Completed during the 10 th grade year. Students are supported with a mentor teacher to guide them through the process. 29 Cell Phone/Electronic Devices Cell phones and electronic devices are allowed A) before and after school and during lunch B) only in classrooms in which a teacher has permitted use (for educational purposes) C) music (w/headphones) is permitted in the cafeteria

30 Attendance Attendance is important! A strong correlation exists between attendance and achievement. Administration will work closely with students to promote positive attendance habits. After 8 absences (excused or unexcused) in a semester (per class), a student s GPA may be negatively impacted (attendance fail).

39 Athletic/Extra-Curricular Code of Conduct Available online 1.67 (C-) GPA minimum for participation Must be passing 5 of 7 courses (not including Seminar) Consequences for drug and alcohol use include referral to Northville Youth Assistance Code of Conduct is applied 365 days a year

40 Physicals Must be dated after April 15 (MHSAA rule) Physical forms can be found on the school website under Athletics NHS will offer physicals on Thursday, June 4 at 4:30 p.m. in the Athletic Wing. Cost is $25.00.

41 Considering competing in Division I or II College Athletics? Students must satisfy the requirements of the NCAA by successfully completing 16 specific core classes (see our handbook and the NCAA Eligibility website for approved courses).
