In 2015, the JCU Townsville City campus was opened in the heart of Townsville City, in Flinders Street. The campus provides a unique and progressive blend of teaching and study space, as well as meeting, networking and consultation facilities, where advanced design, technology and ongoing support services onsite all add to the quality of the environment and study experience. Plans are in place for JCU to also have a Cairns City campus providing similar facilities and opportunities as those available at the Townsville City campus. Our campus in central Brisbane, operated by Russo Higher Education, provides quality undergraduate courses to international students on behalf of JCU. JCU Thursday Island opened in 2003 and offers learning facilities for nursing and education students based in the Torres Strait region. As an accredited professional degree, JCU s Bachelor of Laws is your first step to admission as a legal practitioner in Queensland or elsewhere in Australia. JCU lecturers are experienced teachers who encourage you to engage in real-world practice, and participate in our Work Integrated Learning program (see page 7). You will learn to be multiskilled, versatile and ethical, gaining a strong knowledge of the rule of law and the role of law in social, economic, environmental and political contexts. JCU s Law program provides a solid foundation in traditional law subjects, as well as a variety of interesting and relevant electives, providing the edge required to practise in property and taxation law, government, community, corporate, criminal, and environmental law at a local, state, national, or international level. Flexibility It is possible to complete your degree in less than four years. Our flexible subject offerings include blended learning, online offerings and intensives subjects that can be completed in a shorter time-frame. Scholarships and bursaries are available. Other resources include the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) and the national Indigenous Cadetship Scheme (ICS), providing supplementary wages and work experience. Study in Singapore You can study for a semester on our campus located in the vibrant city of Singapore. 5 Career opportunities Work Integrated Learning Careers in Law JCU Law graduates are highly valued by the profession in our region, across Australia and overseas. You will find JCU graduates working around Australia and internationally in many exciting career areas. Your JCU lecturers and the JCU Careers Service support you in managing your career path. You will be equipped with all the tools and skills needed to achieve your career goals, including career fairs, networking with employers, help with job application preparation and rehearsals for interviews. Our Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program has a significant role in your career development (see page 7). Barristers or solicitors Barristers and solicitors practise in all areas of law. JCU s Bachelor of Laws is an accredited qualification for admission to practise law in Australia, and the University offers bridging subjects for overseas graduates seeking admission to practise in Queensland. Government Many local, state and federal government departments employ graduate legal practitioners, including the Attorney-General s Department, Australian Taxation Office, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Australian Securities and Investments Commission, Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority, Legal Aid Offices, Crown Law, Director of Public Prosecutions and the Department of Defence, as well as many local councils and government-owned corporations. Community sector Legal practitioners are important to local, state, interstate and international community organisations, including consumer protection agencies, human rights organisations, Indigenous representative bodies and community legal centres. Business and Commercial Law Most business and commercial lawyers work in private practice as solicitors or barristers or practise as in-house counsel in larger corporations. Many companies and firms employ law graduates in finance and securities, insolvency, corporations, mining and energy, tax and estate planning. Environmental Law Environmental lawyers practise in the areas of planning and environment, acting for local authorities, developers, or advocates opposing proposed development. Private practitioners are known to provide services pro bono to assist in public-interest cases. Not-for-profit community organisations, such as the Environmental Defender s Office, seek out graduates with knowledge in this field. Property Law JCU law graduates have found employment in private practice, specialising in conveyance, leasing, mortgages and securities, and estate planning. Criminal Law Criminal lawyers practise as solicitors and barristers in both government and private practice. Government departments and agencies such as Legal Aid and the Director of Public Prosecutions employ graduates with practical skills and knowledge of criminal law. Taxation law, corporate law, bankruptcy and insolvency Each of these fields works closely with the accounting profession. JCU law graduates find positions in private accounting firms and law firms, as well as in the public sector for example, the Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and equivalent state and territory departments. Practical experience beyond the classroom Our well established Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program prepares you for transition to the workforce. Our legal placement and project subjects give you the opportunity to participate in practical and real-life learning that introduces you to the essential elements of legal practice. WIL is a great opportunity to gain valuable skills, establish professional relationships, and develop a realistic view of how our legal system operates. JCU Law has a long history of providing Clinical Legal Education to law students. Through the clinical program offered at the Townsville Community Legal Service, our law students have been attending the Legal Service under supervision of qualified legal practitioners and providing advice, casework and community legal education to the community of Townsville for over 20 years. Our WIL in Law program has evolved to include placements/clinics in both Townsville and Cairns at a variety of community legal service providers including: QPILCH (Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House); Community Legal Services; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service Providers; Legal Aid; the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and a number of private law firms. If you are aspiring to advocacy work, we offer training and experience in criminal law sentencing and advocacy before judges, magistrates and barristers. Our WIL in Law program has strong emphasis on social justice, professionalism, collaboration, multidisciplinary problem solving, and regional legal practice. In your final year you will also have the opportunity to collaborate on a project with students from law, business, and information technology, and work together to design, implement, and evaluate a real life project sourced from one of our industry partner organisations. 6 Elective subjects Elective subjects - tailor your degree An elective subject is an optional subject that is credited towards your law degree. It enables you to choose from a specific area of interest that complements your law studies. Our Bachelor of Laws has three streams in its elective program: Choose from sustainability, social justice and governance. Sustainability JCU is committed to the principles of sustainability, and that commitment is extended into our law program. JCU s law program teaches sustainability in terms of its impact on culture, people and place. We focus on environmental sustainability by including the study of socioeconomics, land and property, and through integrating practice-oriented perspectives. Your subject areas include: Indigenous People and the Law in Australia, Native Title Law and Policy, Environmental Law, Succession Law, Conveyancing and Drafting, and the study of mining and resources law and governance. Social justice Social justice promotes fairness and equality through ethical practice. Our elective social justice subjects focus on the law s role in maximising freedoms by limiting the encroachment by others and governments on personal autonomy and self-determination. Your subject areas include: Family Law, Human Rights Law, Public International Law, Dispute Resolution, the study of international marine jurisdictions, and the study of governance, humanitarian law, medical law, and ethics. Governance Sustainable economies and societies require mechanisms for the cost-effective resolution of disputes, including disputes involving the common law, equity and statutory laws. Our governance subjects consider and critique how laws provide certainty, transparency and predictability of outcomes for the relevant parties. Studying Law at JCU provided me with invaluable experiences, including working in a local law firm in my second year. By mid-year I was a permanent employee and many of my fellow students had similar opportunities. One of my degree highlights was undertaking a native title internship at the North Queensland Land Council. I also completed a subject in environmental law and policy, which was fantastic as its focus was on legal issues associated with local tropical environments such as the Daintree and the Great Barrier Reef. 7 Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry) The Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry) is available to existing degree holders who wish to gain an additional qualification in Law. Course highlights Law graduates benefit from a practical approach and an understanding of the complexities of modern society. The reduced timeframe means students enrolled in this program are typically able to complete the core content required in three years of full-time study instead of four. Course overview The Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry) offers an accredited degree that both challenges and exposes you to contemporary issues, the latest research and new ideas in the varying fields of law. The course provides you with a solid foundation in traditional law subjects, along with subjects from a varied elective program. You are encouraged to develop independent thought and critical analysis of legal issues, as well as an interest in law reform and an understanding of community legal problems. I wanted to combine my career in the IT industry, with my MBA and a Law degree. JCU s graduate-entry Law degree suited my needs. The combination of law and technology is very valuable as new technologies continually influence what we do and how we do it. 8 Bachelor of Arts - Bachelor of Laws Bachelor of Business - Bachelor of Laws JCU s joint Bachelor of Arts-Bachelor of Laws degree allows you to gain expertise in a discipline complementary to law in a reduced timeframe. Joint degrees are strongly supported in the legal profession. This joint degree gives you expertise in law plus specialist and personal skills in, for example, communication, human services, politics and international relations. Career opportunities Our Arts-Laws graduates work in private practice, corporations, government and nongovernment agencies, the arts, public policy, business, and as private consultants in a wide variety of organisations. Your extended employment options will depend on the particular Arts major selected. Career options include jobs that require knowledge of the law as it applies to media, international relations, policy and governance. Course overview As a Bachelor of Arts-Bachelor of Laws student you will gain a solid knowledge of the law juxtaposed with an insight into the history, politics and culture of Australia and other nations, along with an understanding of contemporary issues facing our society. JCU s Arts-Law degree equips you with excellent communication, analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, all highly valued by employers. This is a highly-valued joint degree sought after by many employers. Business skills complement your legal practice, particularly in areas such as management, corporate and commercial tax, and written communication. Our subjects are designed with a focus on real-life scenarios and the development of work-ready skills. Career opportunities Depending on your business major, you will have the expertise to obtain employment in myriad business and/or law related positions. Corporations, private and professional practices, and government departments greatly value Business-Law graduates because of the complementary skills and detailed commercial knowledge acquired in both disciplines. Our graduates work in a range of areas within the private and public sectors and are particularly valued in business, industry and the broader legal professions. Course overview All law subjects required for admission to practice are covered in this joint degree, and, in addition to your business subjects, you can choose from a broad range of law electives, see page 9. Depending on your desired career path and whether you study in Townsville or Cairns, your choice of business majors includes: Economics, Financial Management, Human Resources Management, Management, Marketing, Sports and Events Management, Health Management*, Banking and Finance, and Hospitality and Tourism Management. Many of our business subjects are available externally (online) to give you greater flexibility while you study. Professional recognition and accreditation The Law component of this course is an approved qualification for admission to practise law. There s a wonderful tightknit community at JCU and plenty of opportunities for extra-curricular activities. I was interested in History and Politics, and with consideration for future employment, I chose to combine these areas of study with Law. It has given me a versatile skill set and really broadened my options. I was selected to represent the University on the Global Voices youth delegation to the World Trade Organisation Public Forum in Geneva. Besides being a great opportunity to learn about international trade policy, it definitely has been a highlight of my studies. At graduation I will have a qualification, and the knowledge and experience to take me anywhere in the world. Molly Mahlouzarides Bachelor of Laws - Bachelor of Arts While working in a large resort, I enrolled in a Business degree at JCU with a hospitality major. During my second year I completed a law subject which appealed to me, so I also enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws. JCU provides a flexible approach to studying, with online courses, external subjects, intensives and summer schools. I really enjoyed the course and the industry knowledge of JCU lecturers was quite incredible. JCU s Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program gave me practical experience with a Melbourne law firm. I have since secured work with the same firm and am extremely happy with how my studies have given me the skills to succeed in the workforce. 9 Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Honours Honours study involves critical analysis, and an ability to understand and communicate complex issues. JCU s Law Honours program provides the necessary research opportunities for students who anticipate enrolling in higher research degrees. Our Honours program also caters for students who want to enhance their research focus. We have two Honours options, each with differing research components depending on your goals. You can tailor your research project to specialise in a particular area of interest and gain deeper understanding of your chosen area of law. Entry to our Honours program is open to highachieving students our Honours students come from within the top 15-20% of the graduating class. For further information visit: jcu.edu.au/2016/law Bachelor of Science - Bachelor of Laws This joint degree has excellent career outcomes and can lead to high-level employment in corporate law, banking and finance. The course has a focus on practical skills and authentic experiences, including clinical legal placements, advocacy and industry project work. You will have the opportunity to engage with practising law professionals and experts. If you seek admission as a Legal Practitioner you must include certain law subjects in your later years of study. In September 2014 I was appointed Partner with BCK Lawyers in Townsville. I am a sessional Family Law lecturer at JCU and President of the North Queensland Law Association Inc. I have also served as President of the Townsville District Law Association. I found the personal level of assistance at JCU inspiring and because I am from Mackay, the tropical campus felt like home. Currently I am on the Management Committee of the North Queensland Women s Legal Service, a member of the Justice Studies Industry Liaison Group (TAFE NQ) and part of the Community Reference Group for the Eliminate Dengue project. 10 Bachelor of Arts Criminology What is Criminology? Criminology is a field of social science that focusses on the causes of crime, crime prevention and the systems of social control, as well as the treatment, rehabilitation and punishment of criminals. Course overview JCU s Bachelor of Arts majoring in Criminology combines subjects from law, sociology, social work, anthropology, Australian Indigenous affairs, and psychology. This major was developed in consultation with community organisations, Queensland Police Service, Corrective Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, Department of Communities, Education Queensland and local councils. It combines the study of Sociology, Social Work, Law, Anthropology, Indigenous Affairs and Psychology. Career opportunities Our graduates are prepared for work in a variety of roles in criminal justice and communitybased agencies concerned with social justice. You can pursue employment with a variety of organisations including police services, correctional services departments (for example, as parole officers), correctional facilities, juvenile justice organisations, justice departments, communities departments, and community organisations. Professional recognition Graduates can apply to join the Australian Institute of Criminology. You will gain valuable skills in critical thinking and problem solving. 11 Get ready - pathway programs How to apply Diplomas The Diploma of Higher Education is a good starting point if it s been a while since you studied or you don t have the entry qualifications for your course. It is also a recognised qualification in its own right. The Diploma is your pathway into many of our Bachelor degrees, and takes only one year of full-time study to complete. The Diploma has different study areas to choose from. Each study area has a mix of introductory and first year subjects, so you will find a study area that s right for you. Business Studies Engineering & Applied Science General Studies Health Information Technology Our Diploma of Higher Education provides you with much more than an online course can offer. As a student studying on campus you ll get all the support you need, we will help you map a realistic career path and you ll experience what life at university is like, so you ll be ready to step up to an undergraduate degree. On successful completion of the Diploma of Higher Education you can continue into a Law degree, degree, and you may be able to receive some credit for successfully completed subjects.
