6 The Learning Starts Here... 6 Opening General Session Monday, 19 April Featuring President Václav Klaus of the Czech Republic President Václav Klaus will deliver the keynote address to open this year s Global Congress 2004 Europe. He will share his experience and insight in international affairs to motivate and inspire congress attendees on their path to project management excellence. Kenneth O. Hartley, PMP, PMI Fellow, Chair of the PMI Board of Directors will also deliver the State of PMI report during the general session. Before the session concludes, the PMI Professional Awards Program will recognise the many ways in which practitioners around the world are making contributions to the project management profession. Two awards will be presented: PMI Community Advancement through Project Award and PMI Research Achievement Award. Areas of Focus Presentations Monday-Wednesday, April PMI Global Congresses present much more than just industry-related topics on project management. Targeted Areas of Focus bring a regional flavour to each Congress while at the same time ensuring a leadingedge, high-impact, high-quality learning experience for all attendees. A variety of presentation formats to address different styles of learning will be offered case studies, forums, guided design sessions, lectures, panel discussions and simulations. Area of Focus 1: Project Today and Tomorrow As an evolving field of professional expertise, project management is changing, and practitioners are developing and utilising new methods of practising their profession. Presentations in this area may include topics such as project management maturity (PMM), capability maturity model (CMM), and project/programme management office (PMO). Area of Focus 2: Software and Technical Skills From the use of Microsoft Project to new software, procedures and technical skills, the field of project management requires its practitioners to be familiar with all the tools necessary for job excellence. Topics in this area may include new and current software and procedures such as Six Sigma, use of A Guide to the Project Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) and its various extensions, and techniques and software currently or historically used. Area of Focus 3: Measuring Project Success How does one measure project success? Is it on time? On budget? Were all risks minimised or accounted for? What is the return on investment (ROI) for all your efforts? How are you estimating costs or schedules? What about security? Topics in this area may include: measurement techniques, scheduling, estimating, ROI, risk management, benchmarking and accounting for project security in a security conscious society. Area of Focus 4: Project Team and People Skills This topic covers areas of people-to-people skills including team building, working with multicultural teams, management skills, dealing with difficult people (subordinates and superiors), negotiation, and all those skills referred to as soft skills. Area of Focus 5: Small Projects Do Not Always Mean Small Not all projects are large budget ones that last many years and involve large groups of people. Sometimes, the project manager leads a team of fewer than five, has projects that last less than a year and, if they fail, the entire existence of the company may be in question. How do small projects for small companies differ from those for large companies? Are special skills needed to make them successful? Topics in this area might include: transference of enterprise project management skills to the small company, ensuring minimal risk for small projects that have major effects, being a team of one.

7 Area of Focus 6: The State of the Project Profession What is the status of the project management profession? What are both the long-term and short-term futures of project management? How does the project manager relate to and work with the project sponsor? Topics in this area could include: education; training; acceptance of project management as a profession by organisations and governments; relevance of project management; relationships with project sponsors. Area of Focus 7: EMEA Project How should project management be utilised in the emerging markets of Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA)? What challenges are expected and encountered when working with EMEA governmental agencies? Are the cultural differences, even within the EMEA region, a concern to the role of a project manager working across borders? How will admittance to the European Union affect the companies in these countries: will they now consider developing project managers and project/programme management offices (PMO) as an integral part of their organisation? Topics in this area could include: project management in multinational organisations; comparison of how project management is viewed in different parts of the world; expanding markets in the European Union and how they affect project management; enterprise project management in a new economic paradigm; and selling project management throughout the European Union. Area of Focus 8: What is a Project Manager? What skill sets define a project manager? What criteria should an organisation use to select a project manager? Are there general project management skills that all project managers should have? If one could describe the ideal project manager, how would this be done? Topics in this area could include: leadership, best practices, education, certification, human resources, risk management skills, and change management skills. For detailed descriptions of congress presentations, please review the congress programme online at: 7 Attention Project Professionals (PMP )! PROGRAMME CHANGES: The SeminarsWorld programme at PMI Global Congress 2004-Europe is subject to change. Visit the PMI Web site for the most current programme information and complete seminar descriptions. Seminar 1: Building a Next Generation Programme/Project Office (PMO) Jack Duggal, MBA, PMP Level: Intermediate to Advanced The project management office (PMO) has been a growing trend in recent years; however the reality of the turbulent business environment is posing new challenges for implementing PMOs. The pressure to deliver more with less, and reduce overhead costs, has created a need to find innovative approaches. Whether you are building a PMO to support and enhance project management capabilities or to focus on strategic aspects of portfolio management, you may encounter implementation challenges and mixed results. The PMO offers tremendous benefits and a strategic impact but the challenge lies in the focus of the PMO and the way it is implemented and sustained. How can you find innovative ways to build and sustain a PMO that address the challenges and critical success factors? What organisational structures, functions, processes and practices will ensure success? How can you sell and demonstrate PMO value and return on investment (ROI)? This seminar is designed to anticipate, as well as answer, the questions associated with the creation and implementation of a PMO. Besides the traditional elements of a PMO, this seminar will outline the steps necessary to establish or enhance a next generation PMO, focusing on both tactical and strategic aspects. It will introduce a Next Generation PMO framework that you can apply to your organisational needs. The emerging techniques required to build a resultsoriented project office will be presented, focusing on the connections between people, processes, tools and measurement. Each organisation is unique: this seminar will provide a framework that will help you to assess your organisational environment and culture and craft a customised PMO plan. Knowledge areas covered: Project Integration, Project Scope, Project Time, Project Cost, Project Human Resource, Project Communications, Project Risk. Seminar 2: Effective of Project Opportunities Using an Extended Risk Process David Hillson, PhD, PMP, FAPM, FIRM, MCMI Level: Intermediate Projects are subject to a wide range of uncertainties, which could affect achievement of objectives (namely risks), including those which could harm the project (threats) and those which could help the project (opportunities). Well established techniques exist for managing threats, but there has been no comparable approach for opportunities until now. Leading-edge standards such as PMI s Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) include both threat and opportunity in their definition of risk, but most processes have remained threat focused. Using the proven techniques presented in this seminar, the traditional risk process can be extended to ensure that opportunities are maximised at the same time as threats are minimised, giving the best chance to meet project objectives. Knowledge areas covered: Project Risk. Seminar 3: Leadership, Power, Influence, Politics in Project Vijay K. Verma, MBA, PMP, PEng Level: Intermediate to Advanced Gain the power you need to influence others and get the job done. Ignoring the external and internal politics surrounding your project can be hazardous to your project s health. Successful project managers

9 understand the importance of managing stakeholders through leadership and influence. This course will help you analyse the political context of the organisations with which you work and help you convert adversaries and opponents into allies. The techniques and reminders covered in this highly interactive and engaging workshop will give you many practical tips that you can immediately use to manage politics in your own environment. You will evaluate, improve and refine your leadership skills and learn practical strategies to increase your total power. Knowledge areas covered: Project Communications, Project Human Resource, Project Integration. Seminar 4: Programme : A Strategic Decision Process to Bridge the Gap Between Strategy and Projects Michel Thiry, AIA, CVS, CVM, MAPM, PMP Level: Advanced A number of recent studies have demonstrated the lack of communication between project managers and executives. Programme management (PgM) is fast developing as the essential link between strategy and projects. Regularly updated with the most recent developments in the area, this seminar offers an understanding of programme management s connection to business strategy and objectives, beyond multiple-project management. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for programme specific processes, based on an iterative life cycle and the management of multiple stakeholders and their expected benefits. The seminar provides senior managers, programme managers and project directors with tools and techniques to deal with complex, unplanned change in a structured manner. It develops knowledge of particular techniques required for managing programmes and also analyses the competencies and skills required from programme managers. During the seminar, participants will test their recently acquired knowledge on a case study. Knowledge areas covered: Project Human Resource, Project Integration, Project Scope, Project Communications. Seminar 5: Project Quality and Six Sigma Method Frank Anbari, PhD, PMP Level: Advanced In this interactive workshop, participants will strengthen their understanding of planning quality into their projects and monitoring it periodically. They will reinforce their understanding of the cost of quality, ISO 9000 and ISO standards, for effective project quality management. Participants will increase their knowledge of the Six Sigma management method, and the role of Green Belts, Black Belts and other participants in managing Six Sigma projects. They will enhance their understanding of the relationship and integration of project management and Six Sigma strategies. Participants will expand their knowledge of project quality management tools and techniques including selected, relevant tools of the Six Sigma method. Knowledge areas covered: Project Integration, Project Scope, Project Time, Project Cost, Project Quality, Project Human Resource, Project Communications, Project Risk, Project Procurement. Seminar 6: Critical Chain Project Lawrence P. Leach, PMP Level: Intermediate Many projects continue to fail because of schedule and cost overruns and failure to deliver the full project scope. Others are achieving 100% project success, while frequently completing projects in half the time or less and greatly increasing the quality of work life for project team members. Critical chain project management (CCPM) continues to create project success in all types of project environments. Prior to implementation of CCPM, many of these projects had very low success against the triple constraint of time, scope and budget. In this highly interactive seminar you will gain the understanding and skills to immediately apply CCPM to ensure the success if your project. Knowledge areas covered: Project Time, Project Risk, Project Integration, Project Scope. Seminar 7: Project Scope and Change Crispin Kik Piney, PMP Level: Intermediate As most project managers are well aware, the path of true projects never runs smoothly despite all of the best definition, planning and risk management. This seminar is aimed at people with a good understanding of project management. It is composed of seven main units; managing changes in specification; managing changes in scope; managing changes in time and cost; configuration management; the change management process; the role of change management at project closure; and understanding projects as agents of change. The seminar is built around a number of interactive exercises that allow participants to understand the concepts involved and incorporate elements from their own experience and environment. By the end of this seminar, participants will be equipped to manage change as a positive force in future projects. They will also understand how projects can effectively drive change within their organisations. Knowledge areas covered: Project Integration, Project Scope, Project Time, Project Cost. >>> Seminar 8 on next page 9

10 Continued 10 Seminar 8: Creating an Environment for Successful Projects Randall Englund Level: Intermediate to Advanced While upper managers have a great deal to do with project success, many organisational systems (that guide management behaviour) are not consistent with success in the current business environment. This seminar will help you assess your work environment and formulate actions to create a setting for successful projects. You will learn to assemble the pieces of a puzzle (representing environmental factors) that guide you to achieve greater results within a project-based organisation. Understand the why, what, and how of supporting (rather than undermining) project management as an organisational competency. Share insights, examples, and concepts that can change your approach to project management. Knowledge areas covered: Project Integration, Project Quality, Project Human Resource, Project Communications. PMI Research Programme Working Session An additional registration fee is required for this event. Sunday, 18 April The PMI Research Programme will sponsor an all-day working session immediately prior to the congress. The goal of this session is to tap into the knowledge, expertise and wisdom of individuals in the profession in the EMEA region in order to help further the profession globally. Participants will be asked for their input regarding future research projects. This is also a unique opportunity for academics, executives and practitioners in the region to meet the PMI Research Programme team and to learn more about current research projects and future initiatives. All-day PMP participants can earn PDUs towards maintaining their credential. Registration for this session is optional; separate registration fee applies.
