2 Elementary Education (K-6) Program Overview The University offers a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at the,, and campuses. In the Elementary Education program was the largest College of Education program across all campuses with total of 112 students. Of these 112 students 26 were taking pre-requisites for the Alternative Graduate Elementary Education program. That year, one student graduated from the Campus, three from the Campus, and twenty-one from the Campus. The Fall 2007 headcount of Elementary Education undergraduates was campus: 495 Campus: 281 Campus: 187 Montgomery Campus: 2 The Fall 2008 headcount of Elementary Education undergraduates was campus: 346 Campus: 281 Campus: 209 Montgomery Campus: 0 The Fall 2009 headcount of Elementary Education undergraduates was campus: 339 Campus: 274 Campus: 173 Montgomery Campus: 0
3 Expected Outcomes & Assessment Methods Expected Outcomes ELE 3360 ELE 4454 EDU 4499 EO 1: It is expected that at least 75% of students will demonstrate mastery of the content area knowledge required for Elementary Education certification through successful completion of the appropriate PRAXIS II exam EO 2: It is expected that at least 85% of students enrolled in designated methods courses for ELE Ed will demonstrate knowledge of appropriate practices in the content area through successful completion of specified critical assignments EO 3: At least 90% of students in Internship will successfully complete internship with a final rating of P (Pass) EO 4: At least 85% of ELE students will demonstrate knowledge of current and emerging educational technology applicable to the elementary curriculum through successfully completing the critical assignments in the educational technology course with 85% accuracy EO 5: Upon completion of the BS in Elementary Education Program candidates will be able to demonstrate proficiency in conducting research through planning, conducting, assessing and analyzing instruction and how it impacts student learning outcomes. 5 Spring 2010 Undergraduate Early Childhood/Elementary Education Curriculum Committee Meeting The Undergraduate Early Childhood/Elementary Education Curriculum Committee plans to meet in late Spring 2010.
6 Elementary Education (K-6) Recent Improvements Since the merger of the four Alabama campuses in Fall 2005, the College has implemented the use of LiveText to gather data measuring student success of required state standards as evidenced through critical assignments.
7 Elementary Education (K-6) Expected Outcomes and Results EO 1: It is expected that at least 75% of the students will demonstrate mastery of the content area knowledge required for Elementary Education certification through successful completion of the appropriate PRAXIS II exam. In students took the Elementary Education Content Knowledge PRAXIS II exam requiring a minimum passing score of 137. Of this number, 127 students passed the exam for a pass rate of 86%. In of the TROY students taking the PRAXIS and passing it on the first attempt: 97% Exceeded Expectation; 54% - Expectation Not Met; 76% - Exceeded Expectation. In of the TROY students taking the PRAXIS and passing it on the first attempt: =85% - Exceeded Expectation; 58% - Expectation Not Met; 79% Exceeded Expectation. In Fall 2009 of the TROY students taking the PRAXIS and passing it on the first attempt: 78% - Exceeded Expectation; 69% - Expectation Not Met; 90% - Exceeded Expectation. 9 Elementary Education (K-6) Expected Outcomes and Results EO 2: It is expected that at least 85% of the students enrolled in designated methods courses for ELE Ed. will demonstrate knowledge of appropriate practices in the content area through successful completion of specified critical assignments. In % of the students in ELE 3360, the Social Science methods course, successfully completed the critical assignment at level 3 or 4 indicating that the student knowledge of appropriate practices in the content area was exceptional or proficient. 14 Elementary Education (K-6) Expected Outcomes and Results EO 4: Another expectation is that at least 85% of the ELE students will demonstrate knowledge of current and emerging educational technology applicable to the elementary curriculum through successfully completing the critical assignments in the educational technology course with 85% accuracy. Of the 74 students taking the educational technology course in , 88% (62 students) completed the critical assignments with a 3 or a 4 indicating exceptional or proficient in their knowledge of current and emerging educational technology. 20 Elementary Education (K-6) Expected Outcomes and Results EO 9: Over 80% of Education students believe their program was intellectually challenging and stimulating. ( ) In a total of 122 traditional ELE ED students took the Praxis with a 71% passing rate. In a total of 60 traditional ELE ED students took the Praxis; 58 passed for a 97% passing rate. In a total of 91 traditional ELE ED students took the Praxis; 66 passed on the first attempt, for a 73% passing rate. In , a total of 64 traditional ELE ED students took the Praxis; 50 passes on the first attempt, for a 78% passing rate. In Fall, 2009, a total of 44 traditional ELE ED students took the Praxis; 34 passes on the first attempt, for a 77% passing rate.
21 Elementary Education (K-6) Plans for Further Improvement Plans based on curriculum faculty observations College will examine the LiveText training for improvements for both faculty and students. Plans based on student learning outcome data Curriculum groups will work to standardize assessments to ensure they match the PATS (EO 1). Curriculum groups will review critical assignments for redundancy (EO 1). Curriculum groups will work to address the way exit exams are scored with weighted areas for consistency across campuses. (EO 1) College will work to disaggregate data by location for further analysis. During college will review syllabi to explore ways to help prepare students for PRAXIS (EO 1). During the academic year, the committee decided there was a need to look at improving the alignment of the critical assignments completed during coursework and the desired program outcomes (EO 1 & 2).
