I now see more clearly the mechanisms of the market and its logic, as well as the risks that today s consumer practices imply for the environment and for the countries of the Global South. Moreover, I now have a more complete perspective of the functioning of organisations. When I arrived at the University of Essex in September, I wanted to finish my Masters degree quickly and find a job. Now, my aim is to do a PhD and work in academia. I am delighted to have recently been awarded an EBS Doctorial Scholarship. I see it as a meaningful and fulfilling career that will allow me to give something back to society. In any case, my experience at Essex Business School will be very useful background for any future career. Masters courses 25

Staff profile Professor Sam Warren, Research Director Prior to becoming an academic, Sam spent ten years in the sales and marketing industry which fuelled her interest in the sharp end of organisational life: the impact of management practices on everyday employees at work and the deeply emotional and sensory experience of working life. I was very struck when I came back to do my business studies degree, that there was no mention of what it felt like to go to work, in any of the textbooks I was using. Now establishing herself as an inquisitive and creative researcher, with Staff profile Dr Claudia Girardone, Reader in Finance Claudia Girardone is a Professor of Banking and Finance at Essex Business School, where she teaches modern banking and bank strategy and risk in the postgraduate programme. Her research focus is on modelling bank efficiency and productivity, integration, and competition issues in the banking sector. These are hot topics in the current climate, as the banking industry is crucial to economic growth and recent events have shown its vulnerability to systemic crises. pioneering new techniques of inquiry in the management fields, Sam uses visual methodologies to research organisational life. Put simply, I hand participants a camera and ask them to capture images that summarise the tiny minute details of their everyday life. I literally have a window into their working world. Sam joined Essex Business School as a professor in 2010, having previously taught at the Universities of Surrey and Portsmouth and she is a co-founder of the ESRC-funded International Network for Visual Studies in Organizations (www.in-visio. org). Passionate about creative and critical approaches to management, identity and organisation, Sam s critical thinking informs her research and teaching. Professor Girardone s s own research leads and enriches her teaching method and students are encouraged to develop their own ideas through individual projects assigned during the programme. They are also expected to engage in group /team work and presentations in the classroom, as these are skills often required by prospective employers. Professor Girardone has co-authored a textbook entitled Introduction to Banking (FT Prentice Hall, 2006) and has published in many peer reviewed international journals including, among others: Journal of Financial Services Research, Review of Development Teaching research methods to Masters students allows me to inspire a future generation of management researchers in techniques that really open up work practices for investigation. These skills are vital to keep pace with the working world changing so fast due to new technologies essential for tomorrow s managers, for whom people issues are always the biggest challenge. The main aim is to provide a forum for excellence in entrepreneurship research and dissemination, focusing on varied aspects of: new venture creation; entrepreneurial business growth; internationalisation; marketing; social enterprise; and the impact of entrepreneurship on regional and local economic development. ICER has won awards for a number of research projects to date all of which have a focus on these domains and issues. The group has well established links working links with similar centres in the UK and in India, China, USA, Poland, France and Italy. Centre for Global Accountability The Centre for Global Accountability has four main aims: to advance interdisciplinary research into the field of accountability in both developed and developing economies; to develop public policy-oriented research and provide practical solutions; to encourage collaboration and work with suitable organisations and individuals; and to develop understanding of the governance and accountability ideas shaping the world. Marketing Research Group The Marketing Research Group draws on the research expertise of colleagues in the Business School researching in the field of marketing. The Group members engage in current changes of marketing through empirical research and specialise in business-to-business relationship management, new product development, retail marketing and supply chain management. Most of the Group s marketing research projects involve empirical research in the context of manufacturing, high-technology, retailing and non-profit sectors. This reflects the managerial orientation of the courses and modules offered on our Marketing and Entrepreneurship courses The group has strong and expanding research links with national and international academic institutions as well as industry practitioners. Global focus The ICER receives funding to run two unique Research and Development Groups, one from Shandong Weigao Group Company Ltd in China and the other with Zensar Technologies Ltd, a leading software house in India. The Research and Development groups focus on China-European business connections and global technology-based entrepreneurship respectively. The Centre for Work Organisation and Society held an event themed around Aesthetics, Organisation and Economy and involved presentations and discussions around the ongoing aestheticisation of economic and organisational life and its wider impact on society. The event hosted speakers from a range of academic and professional backgrounds from both the University of Essex and other UK and European institutions. The event ended with a panel discussion of the speakers, answering questions from the floor, where a number of lively discussions and pertinent issues emerged. 18 Professor of Accounting, Prem Sikka speaks at the G8 pre-summit conference Professor Steffen Böhm Professor in Management and Sustainability Steffen Böhm is Director of the Essex Sustainability Institute and a professor in management and sustainability at the University of Essex. He holds a PhD from the University of Warwick. His research focuses on political economies and ecologies of organisation, management and the environment. As well as teaching on a broad range of management courses, Steffen supervises three to six Masters students per year. Main research themes: Climate change and carbon markets Creative work and labour Sustainability and the environment Marketing and consumption Management and organisation Psychology and psychoanalysis Sustainability is one of the most important challenges the world faces in the twenty-first century. How can we ensure economic and human wellbeing without destroying the earth? Our Masters modules on sustainability aim to provide answers to these challenging questions. Research excellence continued Ecocultures Our Ecocultures research consortium at the University of Essex explores the art and science of sustainable living. Communities designated as ecocultures are distinguished by high levels of social and natural capital, resilience and a commitment to sustainable living. Professor Steffen Böhm leads a group of researchers from seven of our schools and departments (Biological Sciences, Economics, Essex Business School, Government, Psychology, Sociology, and Law). This multidisciplinary group examines the challenges faced by existing and emerging ecocultures, and identifies ways in which they can contribute to a global transition to sustainability. The Essex Business and Human Rights Project The demands of human rights are having an impact on businesses at a steadily increasing pace. This opens up a complex and fast changing field of concerns, posing challenges to law, and to many of the social and natural sciences. The Essex Business and Human Rights Project aims to encourage dialogue across these disciplines, and among actors from a broad range of backgrounds. It aims to foster research and to bring the results of that research to bear on practical problems. University of Essex professor speaks at G8 A call for major reform of the international tax system was made by Professor Prem Sikka from Essex Business School when he spoke at the 2013 G8 Pre-summit Conference in Belfast in June Professor Sikka argues the G8 needs to halt large corporations shifting profits to low tax jurisdiction to avoid paying higher taxes in the countries where the profit was actually generated. Professor Sikka says The loss of tax revenues is a major reason for the economic turmoil. The current corporate tax system is the outcome of treaties from over a century ago. Since then the world has changed a great deal and corporations have become more mobile and powerful. So a variety of new developments are needed. International outlook Professor Teck-Yong Eng s background in SME business strategy and interfirm relationship management has led to a stream of publications related to business networks and supply chain management and marketing for social enterprises. During the last four years, his research has taken a more international outlook with empirical research in the context of emerging Asia Pacific economies particularly China. He regularly consults and writes for policy-makers and practitioners like the Royal Mail, The Guardian newspaper and the Centre for Policy Initiatives, a non-profit political think tank in Asia. Professor of Marketing Teck-Yong Eng, is currently the managing editor of the Journal of General Management 32 Masters courses Masters courses 33

19 Research degrees Research Degrees (PhD/MPhil) Many of our students who undertake a Master s degree with us subsequently decide to study for a PhD. Our primary goal for the PhD programme at Essex Business School is to prepare outstanding students to undertake cutting edge research in the areas of accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, international business, marketing and management. PhD programmes and supervision are offered at both the Colchester Campus and the Southend Campus of Essex Business School. Colchester Campus offers PhDs in the areas of accounting, finance and management while Southend Campus focuses on entrepreneurship, marketing and international business. Students are normally assigned two supervisors in their chosen research area. They then work closely with these faculty members in an interactive environment where students receive feedback on their ideas and findings on a regular basis. Pathways Our MRes is designed for those wishing to follow a career in research and/or academia, so we equip you with the skills and knowledge to appreciate the depth and breadth of this in a social science context. It is not essential to take an MRes in advance of your PhD study but may be an option for those interested in research. Full PhD programmes usually last for a period of three years (or six years part-time). We also offer an Integrated PhD for students who have no research background. Details of course structure and rules of assessment can be found on our website. It is the policy of the University of Essex to register all PhD students initially as MPhil/PhD students. Confirmation of PhD status normally occurs in the first half of the second year of study for full-time students (or part-time equivalent). In the case of integrated (four-year) PhD students, the confirmation would normally take place during the third year. Funding A range of funding opportunities are available to qualifying applicants. The University of Essex s ESRCaccredited Doctoral Training Centre offers 16 fully funded Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) studentships across over 20 doctoral pathways for 2013/14. Our Doctoral Training Centre is located at the heart of an acknowledged and wellconnected centre of excellence in UK and international social science. It offers excellent training opportunities and a highly stimulating research environment to postgraduate students, researchers, professionals, practitioners and users. University of Essex Doctoral Scholarships The University of Essex Silberrad Scholarships ESRC Doctoral Training Centre studentships for entry facebook.com/rustadmedia Research Essex Business School has an international reputation for research excellence as evidenced by members publication output, esteem, and other scholarly indicators. In the 2008 RAE EBS was ranked second overall in the UK in our subject area where the number of staff submitted to the RAE at 30.5ftes was nearly double the number of research active staff in A distinctive feature of the School is its truly international character. We currently have approximately 130 research students who come from at least 14 countries and five continents. Similarly, Essex Business School has over 80 academic staff who represent a broad range of countries. Entry requirements The normal entry requirement is a good merit (or average of at least 65 per cent) at a recognised Masters course in the UK or equivalent. Further information about applying for research degrees is available online. All students in their first year are required to undertake training in research methods which is assessed. Our efforts to nurture students and develop their talents are rewarded by students high success rate in the job market. Many of our students succeed in finding appointments in leading UK (eg Bristol, Durham and Royal Holloway, St Andrews) and overseas (eg Chinese and Greek) universities while others find employment in the private sector. Zlatinka Gougoumanova, PhD Accounting, Plovdiv, Bulgaria I chose Essex Business School because I knew that a PhD from the School will be internationally recognised. The faculty members are very supportive of PhD students research, and we are welcome to take elective modules from other departments. We are also free to attend the Essex Summer School, which is the European leader in quantitative and qualitative research methods in social science. One of the most valuable experiences I have had so far during my course at EBS has been my PhD fieldwork. I have been fortunate to travel to more than twenty health care entities throughout England and interviewed their senior management. Another aspect of EBS that I value is the fact that the faculty encourages PhD students to submit papers to national and international conferences. One does not need to have completed his or her fieldwork to have a paper accepted at such conferences. I strongly recommend submitting a paper even if your research is based on just several interviews. At these conferences and doctoral colloquiums, I was able to hear presentations from leaders in my field and even met the people who will be the external examiners during my Viva. 34 Masters courses Masters courses 35
