4 Choosing the right SEO firm to help market your plumbing business is more than a matter of price. It s important to choose an SEO firm that is qualified in all aspects of search engine optimization, as well as have knowledge of your industry. Knowledge of the plumbing industry is often over looked. In fact, many SEO companies that basically work for anyone will often tell you that it s not important, SEO is SEO. That could not be further from the truth, there are so many things in the plumbing industry that differ from any other localized business, so an SEO company with good industry knowledge is a must. At the same time, you ll want to work with an SEO firm that sets reasonable expectations. Search engine optimization is not a quick fix. It can take several months for optimized content to earn top positioning on search engines. If you are being told differently or are talking with someone who can guarantee top placement, then you must question the vendor about their methods; they could be doing something that actually could get your site penalized or banned. The general rule of thumb in the SEO industry is if the company can guarantee it, then run the other way. As a plumbing contractor, you of course can guarantee your work, because you can go back and fix it. With search engine marketing, you cannot guarantee what you cannot control. SEO firms that guarantee placement are selling you a lie, you just cannot guarantee what you can t control. Search engine optimization is a long- term commitment to Internet marketing. Although your SEO firm will likely complete much of the work in a relatively short amount of time, there is continuing effort that must occur for your site to earn and maintain higher placement.

5 Questions you might want to ask the SEO firm you are thinking of hiring Q. How familiar are you with the plumbing industry? A. It s important to use an SEO company that works in the Plumbing Industry. This is pretty important because they will know the right keywords that rank along with an understanding of the type of content to produce. SEO companies that don t specialize in a niche market will tell you SEO is SEO no matter what industry, but that s just not the case. Q. How will the SEO firm determine which keywords will be the target of your optimization efforts? A. Research is an important element to SEO success. A big advantage is of course an SEO company that works in the Plumbing industry, but also a company that takes the time do the proper keyword research. Q. Will the optimization program include an analysis of your site s design, navigation, coding, content, and incoming links? A. There is an old saying, garbage in garbage out. A good SEO firm will be able to provide you with recommendations on improving other areas of your site that either affect search engine placement or the site visitor s experience. If they don t, and just pile pages onto a non- converting site, it could be a recipe for disaster. Q. Will they also analyze your competitors sites to determine what sites in your industry are performing well and why? A. This may seem like an obvious thing right but try and figure out why the guy in the top position is there. All of those guys that call you everyday telling you they can get you on page 1 for $ don t do any competitor research. Their whole business plan is to keep the customers coming in the front door faster than they go out the back door. Things to ask for before signing up with an SEO firm

6 1. Ask prospective SEO firms to scope out how they would optimize your site. What on- page and off- page tactics will they be using? This will give you the best way to make an apples- to- apples comparison on pricing from competing SEO firms. You will find pricing all over the place just be sure you know exactly what you are getting. 2. Ask for references in your industry. Let me emphasize the importance of your industry here. If they show you how well they are ranking for a company that sells left- handed monkey wrenches in Jasper, Colorado, well... that would be a lot easier than say New York Plumber. A Good SEO company can show you results and even be able to have you talk to their customers about their success. 3. Ask how long they have been in business and if they are indeed a full- time business. The SEO industry is fly- by- night and anyone who owns a computer and an SEO for Dummies book will claim to be the next guru. 4. Ask how they prove your success. A good SEO company will provide you with weekly or monthly reports tracking everything from where you rank on Google to how many visitors came to your website and what keywords brought them there. 5. This is not a question you would ask them, but something you can check yourself. Where do they rank on Google for their keywords? Some don t rank at all and when questioned will tell you, I don t have time to work on my own site, I m working on my client s site. Hmmm, not a good answer. If that is the case, then A.) They may have only been around for a short period of time, B.) Are a one man shop with no resources to help you, and C.) If they can t rank themselves, then they can t rank you.

7 Common mistakes that people make when trying to choose the right SEO firm 1. Going with the SEO vendor that promises a # 1 position or first- page placement. 2. Participating in offers promising to submit your site to the search engines. 3. Selecting an SEO firm that offers you a quick fix - - just adding meta tags, with no adjustments to content or external inbound links. 4. Developing your site in frames, which oftentimes creates problems for search engines trying to index your site. 5. Developing your site entirely in Flash. Flash on a site exists as an image. Search engines can t read text off an image. 6. Using hidden links or text to try to boost your keyword density or link relevancy (search engines call this spam). 7. Engaging in questionable linking schemes that generate reciprocal links with sites that have no relation to your business or industry. 8. Buying paid links from sites you know nothing about. There are specific directory sites that provide value from a search engine optimization standpoint. Stick with those. 9. Setting unrealistic expectations. Search engine optimization doesn t deliver results on a deadline.
