Topics include social responsibility, ethics, the judicial system and court procedure, business torts and crimes, contracts, bailments, forms of business structure, bankruptcy, securities regulation, antitrust, consumer protection, personnel and labor law, international law and other relevant legal and social topics. Prerequisite: None Required Text: McAdams, Tony, Neslund, Nancy, and Zucker, Kiren Dosanjh. Instructor s Web Site: Course materials may be found on the University s Blackboard system at Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) recognize the application of business practices within the context of existing social, political, and legal environments in the United States. 2) understand the importance of legal, social, and political boundaries placed on business behavior, and to begin to assess the bearing of these boundaries on individual value and normative systems. 3) explain the history and intent of political, social, and legal structures.

2 Prerequisites/Technology: - High Speed Internet - Computer with a MAC or Windows Operating System, Microsoft Office Word ( or 2007 or higher) - Refer to Angelo State University's distance Education website for further technology requirements: Course Web Site: Course materials may be found on the University s Blackboard system at Grading Policies: This course employs reading assignments, LearnSmart Assignments, Homework Assignments, Weekly Quizzes, and exams, and a written project to measure student learning. Your grade is based upon the following: Grading System: Your grade is based upon the following: o 10% = Assignments (LearnSmart Assignments & Homework) o 10% = Weekly Quizzes **The two (2) Assignments with the lowest grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. The two (2) Quizzes with the lowest grades will be dropped at the end of the semester. The ONE (1) Exam with the lowest grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. That is why we will take five exams, but only four are shown above. Angelo State University employs a letter grade system. Grades in this course are determined on a percentage scale: A = % B = % C = % D = % F = 59 % and below. Final Exam: Your final exam will simply be the 5 th exam scheduled for this course.

It is the professor s intention to be as fair and impartial as is humanly possible. Therefore, all students will be asked to adhere to the same set of guidelines and rules UNLESS there are disabilities or documented extenuating circumstances that have been discussed with the professor and the Student Life Office. Please make sure you inform the professor as soon as any situation arises. Do NOT wait until the problem is compounded by poor class performance, poor attendance, etc. b. Academic integrity is expected. This includes, but is not limited to, any form of cheating, plagiarism, unauthorized sharing of work, or unauthorized possession of course materials. The professor assumes that all students can be trusted. Please do no violate this trust. Violation of academic integrity will result in a failing grade for the course. Student absence for religious holidays A student who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence.
