1 Business Transformation Through IT Leadership BUTLER UNIVERSITY CORPORATE AND EXECUTIVE EDUCATION
2 Context There exists a need for business school curriculum that prepares experienced managers with technology background to participate more broadly in the senior leadership of the organization. Effective candidates for IT leadership positions, particularly at the Chief Information Officer (CIO) level, require a level of business acumen and great comfort with leadership responsibility in technology disciplines in order to be effective. Traditional MBA programs fall short of providing the technology background or exposure to the unique issues and challenges of the CIO. Traditional MS in Computer Science programs are geared towards advanced practitioners of the field and not business leadership/ management. More than ever, Indiana businesses need competent individuals to provide their company with business transformation and productivity gains through the effective and potentially strategic application of information technology. To help emerging IT leaders gain crucial leadership skills and strategic perspectives, the Butler University College of Business has created the Business Transformation Through IT Leadership Program. The Concept This partnership program will join together outstanding corporations, along with the Butler University College of Business, under the direction of Butler Corporate and Executive Education. The partners will work together in the design and delivery of an IT leadership development program for high potential middle to upper middle managers. The companies will represent diverse industry groups with preference given to those who have non-competitive business linkages and a strong commitment to do the work at enhancing the leadership development practices of the member firms. Key Partnership Outcomes A forum to explore some of the critical leadership development issues such as the assessment, retention and development of the next generation of IT leaders for the partner firms. A partnership to enhance both a deepened understanding and application of leadership effectiveness. Curriculum developed through a rigorous assessment process. A forum for peer interaction and networking. Unique curriculum development process, integrating relevant research and knowledge of the partnership companies. Organization A governing board will be formed, consisting of designated human resources representatives from each of the participating companies, Butler Corporate and Executive Education representatives, and Butler College of Business faculty. This group will provide oversight, participant selection and faculty review. Additionally, each company will be asked to designate a senior executive to champion the program and serve as potential speakers in the program. Audience The target market for this program includes private sector, public sector and notfor-profit enterprises large enough to include an information technology department within their organization. The senior sponsors of this program would be CIO executives (or those in comparable roles) and as a part of their business continuity/ succession planning, will be asked to identify candidates within their firms that possess the management experience and technical acumen to someday be a candidate for a senior leadership IT position.
3 The Program The program requires 4 semesters of classes/experiences. Each semester assumes 16 sessions. Each session is three (3) hours, delivered on the Butler campus from 5:30 8:30 p.m. Materials will include a book, articles, cases and handouts. Pedagogy the program will be implemented through a combination of lectures; guest speakers; case studies and action learning projects. Sessions will be taught by a combination of Butler business tenure-track and adjunct faculty. Learning Objectives Business Transformation Through IT Leadership Program. Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to: Demystify IT to executives and stakeholders and show its value to the business model and strategic objectives. Understand project portfolio analysis and determine the IT initiatives that need the greatest focus and resources. Better use technology to increase revenues, productivity and efficiency. Identify tools that help diagnose IT misalignment and learn how to use them to remedy problems. Develop people to ask the right questions about IT and business strategy. Apply specific IT tools, techniques, solutions and processes in their respective organizations. Advance IT strategy design, development and deployment for their organizations. Build a high level of confidence in understanding IT tools, processes and methodologies. Critically align resources, IT strategy, people, processes and projects with a focus on cost, quality and delivery outcomes. Leverage a network of contacts as a resource for the sharing of knowledge and power in the marketplace. Solve current IT challenges in their respective organizations. Program Outline Semester 1 Information Technology Fundamentals The first semester concentrates on reviewing, at the IT leadership level, the four key technology areas the IT strategic business leader normally manages. The sessions will include concepts, evolution, adoption models and current cases presented by CIOs or vendors, and business considerations for each of the major information technology disciplines including application development and package software implementations, databases and business intelligence, data and voice communications, and system architecture and data center operations. Some specific case studies of companies dealing with these four technologies will be included. Semester 2 Information Technology Planning and Execution The second semester focuses on the leadership tasks normally associated with assuming responsibility for an IT organization as its strategic business leader. The focus is on establishing an operating plan and then identifying and addressing the business needs. This semester includes topics related to IT ongoing operations management including customer service, project management, critical situation management and staff development, and then IT planning and execution management including completing an IT assessment for an organization or department and developing the IT strategic plan. Semester 3 IT Financial Management and the Strategic Business Leader In semester three, the program addresses the IT strategic business leaders responsibilities in managing the assets of the business and their participation as leader, both of IT and as a senior member of the organization s management team. Asset management topics include financial management, vendor management and governance and compliance topics. Under IT leadership, we will discuss the IT strategic business leader s role in the organization including delivering value, a review of the varying roles across business models and a leadership workshop. Semester 4 Transforming the Business through IT Leadership Semester four is designed to put all of the previous topics to work as each member of the class assumes a role as an acting department level IT strategic business leader for a part of the participant s organization or for an assigned enterprise either an SMB or non-profit. Each participant will complete a short term plan for their organization, conduct an IT assessment, prepare a strategic plan with recommendations and a budget, and prepare a summary presentation for the executive team. Through active classroom discussions and assistance from his or her assigned coach, working through the assignment will prepare the class participant to assist their organization through applying IT leadership principles. Program Investment $12,000 per participant Program investment includes tuition, program materials, parking and break service.
