1 FINAL GOODBYES: DEATH & DYING ACROSS FAITH TRADITIONS Henry Ford Health System Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015 Our Guest Speakers REV. BARBARA J. ANTHONY Rev. Barbara Anthony is a native Detroiter who was educated in the parochial school system. Formerly, she was a Roman Catholic sister in the order of the Sisters of Charity, Mt. Saint Joseph, Ohio for seven years, during which time she directed an inner-city day care center and was a community worker and missionary. Pastor Barbara, as she is affectionately known, is married to John Anthony and they have two married daughters, Marci and Chareese. She is grandmother to four grandchildren. Her family is a tremendous blessing to her and affords her a wealth of spiritual insight, joy, and strength. In ministry for 40 years, she served the Mitcham Chapel A.M.E. Church located in Royal Oak, Michigan for 29 years. She has been in the active ministry of the gospel for 40 years. Recently, she retired from the pastorate but remains in active ministry. Pastor Barbara holds a BA from University of Detroit, a Master of Social Work degree from Wayne State University, a Master of Arts in Theology degree from University of Detroit, and a Master of Divinity degree from St. Cyril & Methodious Seminary in Orchard Lake. Among her many denominational and community leadership roles, she is City of Southfield Police Chaplain, and a Lieutenant and Lifetime Member in the Michigan Police & Fire Chaplains Association. 1
2 REV. AMELDIA BROWN Ameldia R. Brown, M.Div., BSN, RN is manager of the Faith Community Nursing Network department of Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals (HFMH) which supports health ministries that provide individual and population health related care activities. Over the past three years, advance care planning, diabetes prevention and chronic disease management have been targeted areas of focus. Her leadership includes a transitions of care project focusing on uninsured and newly insured and a web-based documentation system for community health used by networks of health ministers from 28 states. Ameldia received a BSN from Wayne State University and a Master of Divinity from Ashland Theological Seminary. She has practiced nursing for 39 years in a variety of settings. Ameldia has spoken extensively across the United States, most recently speaking in April 2014 by invitation for the International Parish Nurse Resource Center Westberg Symposium, of the Church Health Center, on Transitions of Care. Her awards include the 2012 Health Ministries Association national Wilkerson- Droege award for leadership and the Henry Ford Macomb Hospital Medallion Ball Award for excellence in leadership in March 2014, and for a second time was invited to participate at the White House for Partners in Health: Aligning Clinical Systems, Faith and Community Assets, in April
3 IMAM ABDULLAH EL-AMIN Imam Abdullah El-Amin is the founder and Imam of the Muslim Center of Detroit. The Muslim Center was founded in 1983 and incorporated in The masjid (mosque) was formed to have a better outreach direction. The mosque interacts with like-minded people from all faith traditions, particularly Jews, Christians and other Muslims. Imam El-Amin is also the owner of Crescent Islamic, Funeral Goods and Services. Crescent serves primarily the Muslim community but is open to other faith traditions, as well. He is the Community Director of Metro Detroit Service Stations, a group of over 100 gas stations in the Metro Detroit Area. In this role, he works to bridge the gap between the community and the business owners. Imam El-Amin graduated from Shaw College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry. His religious training was at the American Muslim Society Institute in Chicago, where he completed Islamic studies under Imam W.D. Mohammed in He married to Dr. Cheryl El-Amin Ph.D., MSW. They have three grown children: Maurice, a high school math teacher; Zarinah, an anthropologist, and Idris, a doctor of veterinary medicine. 3
4 RABBI E.B. FREEDMAN Rabbi E.B. Freedman is the founding director of Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network (JHCN) serving southeastern Michigan. In 1991, Rabbi Freedman helped create the Jewish Hospice Services Program for Hospice of Michigan, the first Jewish-oriented hospice program in the Detroit area. In 1999, he founded JHCN so that all Jewish hospice patients could remain on their respective hospices and receive Jewish services through a central agency. On any given day, JHCN incorporates a team of 30 clergy members, volunteers and clinicians to serve approximately 180 Jewish chronic and terminally ill patients enrolled in 15 hospices, 9 palliative care hospital-based programs, and 23 Jewish community agencies in the metro Detroit area. The Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network has served more than 8,000 patients to date. Rabbi Freedman received Rabbinic Ordination (Doctorate of Divinity) from Beth Medrash Govoha, in Lakewood Township, New Jersey, in Each year in Detroit, he co-chairs the annual Caring Coalition conference, an all-day hospice education program for more than 800 healthcare professionals. Rabbi Freedman is frequently asked to speak about caring for terminally ill patients throughout the United States and abroad. 4
5 SHAMA MEHTA Shama Mehta is a chaplain at Beaumont Hospital Dearborn (formerly Oakwood Healthcare) where she has worked since 2012, first as a hospital chaplaincy trainee, and since July 2014 on staff as a fulltime chaplain. She is a practicing Hindu, and has been training in the Hindu faith tradition through the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania and through Oxford Center for Hindu Studies. Shama is a regular participant in interfaith panels representing the Hindu faith tradition. She has finished four units of Clinical Pastoral Education, and is now working towards Board Certification. Shama is currently doing her Master s in Pastoral Ministry at Ecumenical Theological Seminary of Detroit. Shama has a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from Eastern Michigan University, and is a licensed Nursing Home Administrator. 5
6 MICHAEL RYAN Michael Ryan received his Master's in Health Care Mission from the Aquinas Institute of Theology in Based in Livonia, he currently serves as the Vice President of Mission Integration for Trinity Home Health Services, a National Health Ministry of Trinity Health. THHS provides administrative, clinical and operational oversight for home health and hospice agencies in six states. In that role, he also serves as the ethicist, and is a member of the Archbishop's Advisory Committee on Health Care Ethics. For more than eight years, Michael was a member and chair of the ethics committee for a four-hospital Catholic health care system in Tucson, Arizona. Michael also holds a Master's degree in Nursing, and worked for over 20 years in hospice and palliative care in both clinical and administrative roles. 6
7 RAMAN SINGH Raman Singh has long been active in interfaith work. She is currently serving as the President of the Interfaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit (IFLC). Her involvement with IFLC has included working on the Education Committee and co-chairing the Grants Advisory Committee. Raman works with various organizations including WISDOM, World Sabbath, and the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, along with Interfaith Power and Light. She is a regular panelist on the DPTV Program Interfaith Odyssey. She is also participates in her local Gurdwara and Sikh Community (Gurdwara Sahib Mata Tripta). She serves on the Board of Trustees of the Gurdwara and helps run the youth educational programming and outreach work. Raman has served on the School Board for the West Bloomfield School District, and currently serves on various School District committees. A lifelong Michigan resident, Raman Singh is a married to Heminder Singh, M.D. and is the mother of two grown sons. She is a graduate of Wayne State University with an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and owns a small business in Plymouth, Michigan. 7
8 JAMES B. TUBBS James B. Tubbs is Professor of Ethics and Religion and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Detroit Mercy, where he teaches courses in Health Care Ethics, Christian Ethics, Ethics and Public Policy, and Social Justice. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Oakland University - William Beaumont School of Medicine. A graduate of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, Dr. Tubbs earned his MA and PhD degrees from the University of Virginia and has been on the faculty of the University of Detroit Mercy since His publications include journal articles, book reviews, case studies, book chapters, and two books: Christian Theology and Medical Ethics: Four Contemporary Approaches (1996) and A Handbook of Bioethics Terms (2009). He also serves on UDM s Human Subjects Research Review Board, two hospital Ethics Committees, and chairs the Ethics Advisory Committee of the Presbyterian Villages of Michigan. 8
