WSST, S96, 2:00-2:50 pm, Ironwood, Friday 6 March 2015 Alien Blood (AB), crime scene investigation, is a time-tested activity that engages students in the act of empirical science through use of standard molecular biology tools and techniques that include micropipets and gel electrophoresis. There are eight different scenarios so that students will need to use the evidence that they see in their group gel to make a decision whether to convict a suspect, or not. Students will learn the basics of DNA migration using a simulation that is safe to touch and handle. Since two of the suspects have blood that glows in the dark, it is required to include time to work in the dark using black lights. Results are attained after five minutes of operation so that students can load the gel and analyze data within one class period. AB is flexible enough that you can decide what angle will work in your curriculum, whether you want to explore ethical issues (is a suspect whose blood glows in the dark a criminal?), or delve into what constitutes a fair comparison, and why it takes more than one trial to confirms facts. 2 YOUR MISSION: The sample marked included in this file was obtained at where was stolen. The criminal had a struggle with a security guard and the criminal drew blood, but still got away. You have also been given profiles on all of the suspects in the case, and a sample of each of their blood. Your goal is to figure out whose sample of blood was found at the crime scene. You have been provided the necessary materials to conduct electrophoresis today. Gel electrophoresis is one of the newest techniques in determining criminal identity. Gel electrophoresis is a key technique in molecular biology. It uses an electric field to move charged molecules through a gel. Researchers use electrophoresis to detect a compound, to separate one compound from a mixture, to characterize a mixture, and to purify a compound. The compounds most commonly used in electrophoresis are proteins and nucleic acids. You are then required to fill out the akached Forensic Scientist Report. This should include test results and your explanation of whom the leading suspect should be.
