2 1. FUNDAMENTALS OF AN EFFECTIVE CV The purpse f a CV is t grab a prspective emplyer s attentin, interest them, and mtivate them t invite yu t an interview. A gd CV ges beynd just listing jb respnsibilities. Ideally, it shuld include infrmatin n yur achievements and, where pssible, an utline f any benefits that were enjyed as a result. When drafting yur CV, remember it is mre than just an intrductin t a ptential emplyer. CVs are regularly used by emplyers as an agenda at interview. Of key imprtance is t prvide the kind f infrmatin that yur targeted reader is likely t be interested in. Illustrate types f wrk that yu have experience f and prvide named examples where pssible. This will facilitate the interview t flw better and yu als have a better chance f predicting, and therefre preparing fr, interview questins. Shrt, succinct bullet pints are the best frmat fr a CV. Dn t write lng sentences and bulky paragraphs. Clarity is essential - the reader will nt spend time trying t decipher the pint yu are trying t make. Make sure that yur CV cntains yur full career and academic histry and that any chrnlgical gaps, including years spent abrad, travelling, sabbaticals etc, are explained. Identify career highlights, real successes yu have had and als what yu have enjyed. Give thught t the interests sectin f yur CV. 3 1.1 Prfile / Summary Prfiles r summary sectins are usually placed just under name and cntact details and are ften highlighted in varius ways - such as with a text bx. The prfile / summary draws the reader in and encurages them t read further. As cvering letters becme less relevant, the imprtance f a prfile / summary sectin has grwn. Fr instance, recruiters generally pass n CVs, but nt cvering letters t emplyers. Within these circumstances, the prfile / summary sectin can intrduce the reader t the CV, in the same way that cvering letters used t. Using these wrds at the start f each bullet pint under the details f yur emplyment will wrk twards enthusing the reader. The wrds yu use will depend upn yur experience. Fr example, a candidate applying fr a managerial psitin will want t make use f wrds such as "versaw, develped, imprved and reduced", whereas smene lking fr a mre creative rle will want t use wrds such as "designed, cmpiled and created". 12 3. WHEN A DIFFERENT KIND OF CV IS REQUIRED Planning a significant change in career directin ften invlves being perceived as verqualified fr the jb yu re interested in. Being verqualified ften presents mre prblems than peple expect. Emplyers and recruiters can have suspicins as t why yu re interested in the psitin and it can be easier and safer t just hire smene wh mre clsely fits the jb descriptin. In these circumstances, yur CV shuld be cnstructed t take fcus away frm yur qualificatins and try t accentuate the reasns behind yur interest in the psitin being applied fr. This can be dne in a number f ways: Tne dwn jb titles / achievements / keywrds. If yur CV is full f law related matters, tne this dwn s that details irrelevant t the jb being applied fr d nt crwd ut ther mre relevant matters. Use a CV frmat that takes the fcus away frm qualificatins (maybe including them lwer dwn in the CV) and highlight relevant skills and experience instead. Demnstrate in any way pssible that yur skills are related t the cmpany s grwth plans and which yu re lking t develp in the jb applied fr. Accentuate yur team wrking skills. Ding s will demnstrate the success f the team (and the cmpany) is f mre imprtance than yur wn cncerns. Demnstrate enthusiasm fr the jb applied fr. Lk at presenting previus respnsibilities and achievements in a way that is relevant t the rle. 3.1 Drafting a Functinal CV In this frmat the main infrmatin is presented in terms f jb functins rather than in chrnlgical rder. It is nt as ppular with recruiters as it can suggest there may be hidden gaps in emplyment. It is very useful hwever if yu want t place emphasis n skills / strengths that yu have that are relevant t a specific jb / sectr. Reasns fr using a functinal CV include: If yu are aiming t sell yur skills t target specific cmpetencies. If yu d nt have a cnsistent emplyment histry. Yu are / have recently changed careers. Yu have experience but it is nt related t the psitin yu are interested in. The functinal frmat enables the writer t cmbine experience gained in several jbs under ne heading, (e.g. sales experience training prvisin etc.). This is useful where smene has held several different psts within a shrt perid f time.
