1 To: GSFTA Visual Art and Filmmaking Applicants: Congratulations for having applied to Tennessee's Governors School for the Arts! Simply having applied shows a great deal of maturity, passion and effort on your part! There is one more step to the process: the review/interview. It is important to try to relax and come to the appointment with an open mind and willingness to chat with the interviewers. All interviewers are artists/teachers and they remember what it was like to be passionate about art and movie making while in high school! Our task is to find out about YOU and allow you to get a better idea of what the program is all about. So, just bring all the required materials with you (do your best with the requirements - we understand that our applicants have a very wide range of experiences and backgrounds!) At the end of this document, you will find the schedule of appointment times for both visual art and filmmaking. By the way, please try to arrive a bit early. Coming a bit early helps us stay on schedule! The following notes should be helpful as you plan the trip to MTSU: GETTING TO THE AUDITION SITE If you will be using GPS, you may use MTSU Boulevard, Murfreesboro, TN or Faulkinberry Drive, Murfreesboro, TN. Either one should put you on campus near our signs. I would also suggest going to the MTSU website s campus map and finding the Andrew Todd building to give you a better idea of where it is situated on the somewhat large MTSU campus. (Our entrance is by the large parking lot shown.) VISUAL ART AUDITION REQUIREMENTS You need to bring your portfolio of original artwork to the ART BUILDING (formerly the Todd Library) in the middle of the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. Once on campus, look for signs saying GS-ART or something similar. VISUAL ART PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS: Bring 6 to 8 pieces of your best artwork. If you have a sketchbook, you may bring it as well. Do NOT bring extremely delicate or large artworks with you! (Such works may be presented in photographs, digital prints, etc.) If you have video work to show and/or wish to show other artworks on computer, be sure to bring a laptop or portable video player with you. Since drawing is an important component of the art program (no matter what classes you may be enrolled in) your portfolio should show some evidence that you can draw from real life and would be a successful participant in any required drawing activities. THE REVIEW PROCESS: We have a comfortable waiting area for you. When your name is called, you will be asked to bring your work into the review room and to quickly setup the works on our display boards for review. You will chat with the reviewers for about 15 minutes and will take your work with you when you leave. In the review, we look for a combination of skills, individuality, maturity, passion, and understanding of art concepts like composition, use of color, etc. Again, please try to arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes early, if possible. While we will try to accommodate applicants who arrive quite early or late, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to make changes or adjustments. And, while we will try to honor the schedule, our main priority is to fairly review ALL APPLICANTS to the program! Yes, we know you may be a bit nervous but do try to relax as much as possible. We re just artists and teachers ourselves! FILMMAKING AUDITION REQUIREMENTS You need to bring your application materials to the ART BUILDING (formerly the Todd Library) in the middle of the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. Once on campus, look for signs saying GS-ART or something similar. In the art building, we have a comfortable waiting room for you. When your name is called, simply follow the reviewer to the review room for your interview. Each Filmmaking applicant should bring the following items to the interview site: ---A portfolio of photo images that tell a narrative story with a beginning, middle and an end. This may be presented as photographic prints/inkjet prints or you may present them on your laptop during the interview AS LONG AS YOU ALSO BRING A CD WITH THE IMAGES ON IT (we need to have a copy for the final adjudication process); ---An original 1-page story idea for a video or short film (presenting the idea clearly is what s important!); ---A 1-3 page paper about your favorite film or director that shows how you see and experience this medium, including elements used in the film or by the director that make this film or the director s work interesting to you;... and,...

2 ---If you have already done some film/video work, you may bring a short video, film or animated piece. You may show the piece on your own laptop during the interview AS LONG AS YOU CAN LEAVE A COPY (QuickTime on a CD or a DVD)- we need to have a copy for the final adjudication process. Each Filmmaking applicant will participate in a short interview to explore his or her interests, commitment, habits, plans, ambitions, and general sense and knowledge of filmmaking.try to arrive at least 5 or 10 minutes early, if possible. While we will try to accommodate applicants who arrive quite early or late, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to make big scheduling changes or adjustments. And, while we will try to honor the schedule, our main priority is to comfortable review all applicants, giving us the best chance to get to know as much as possible. Please note that Filmmaking application materials cannot be returned to applicants due to the mailing expense. You should only leave COPIES of your materials, NOT your originals! Materials will only be used for the adjudication process. THE FOLLOWING SECTION GIVES THE AUDITION APPOINTMENTS FOR FILMMAKING AND VISUAL ART IMPORTANT NOTE: PLEASE SHARE THE APPOINTMENT TIMES WITH ANY OTHER STUDENTS YOU ARE SURE HAVE APPLIED FOR FILMMAKING OR VISUAL ART! SOME OF THE ADDRESSES WEREN T ACCURATE SO POSTING THE SCHEDULE ON THE GS WEBSITE SEEMS THE BEST APPROACH. GREAT EFFORT WAS MADE TO GIVE YOU A DATE AND TIME THAT WOULD WORK FOR YOU and, hopefully, others from your area or school. (I tried to schedule students from the same or nearby schools as close to the same basic time periods as possible, in an effort to support carpooling.) PLEASE BE PROMPT as we are on a tight schedule! ALSO NOTE THAT THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP OPPORTUNITIES UNLESS BAD WEATHER IS SEVERE ENOUGH TO PREVENT THE AUDITIONS FROM TAKING PLACE! CHANGES IN AUDITION TIMES/ DATES ARE DIFFICULT TO ARRANGE AT THIS TIME, BUT IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE AUDITION TIMES/DATE YOU MAY CONTACT ME BY IF YOU ARE LATE FOR YOUR AUDITION, JUST COME AS SOON AS YOU CAN AND WE WILL TRY OUR BEST TO FIT YOU IN AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. We re looking forward to meeting you on January 17th or 18th!
