WhileIPnetworksprovidemanycapabilitiestodefineVirtualPrivateNetworks(VPNs)andprioritize differentmultimediatraffic,theyarenotdesignedtobesessionawareandtheyprovidefewcapabilities tomanageandcontrolend usersessions;asessionbeingtheip equivalentofaphonecall.toillustrate thiskeypoint,manytimesuserscomplainaboutcallqualityacrossavoiceoverip(voip)enterprise networkwhiletheip/mplsnetworklayerisworkingproperly.thisisavoidincurrentipnetwork solutionsandhasthepotentialtoimpactconvergedip PBXinstallations. 4 Cost effectivelyoperateaconvergedcommunicationnetworkforthedeliveryofreal timeip services SessionManagementChallenges Intheconvergedrich mediaenterprise,servicesupportrequirestrafficmanagementonasession bysessionbasis.unlikethepstn,whichofferspredictableresourceutilizationandguaranteedservice levels,theipnetworkisinherentlyamulti serviceandbest effortnetwork.anewapproachisrequired toderivepstn likecontrolsandreal timeservicepredictability.theip LayeroffersQualityofService (QOS)andsecurityfeaturessuchasVLANtaggingandMPLS.However,evenwiththeselowerlayer features,sessionqualityisnotguaranteednorreportedonanindividualsessionbasis;voicequalityofa VoIPsessionmaybepoorwhiletheIPlayerisworkingproperly.ThisproblemismoreapparentasIP sessionstraveloutsidetheenterpriseviadirectiptrunkstotheserviceprovider.whileserviceproviders mayprovideservicelevelagreements(sla)withintheirownnetwork,slasaredifficulttoguaranteeas sessionstraversemultipleandworldwideipnetworks.networkadministratorsrequireaddedsession specificcontrolandintelligencethatallowthemthefollowing: 1. Dynamiccontroloverthenetworkhandlingofsessions 2. Theabilitytotailorthesessionsupportbasedonbothbusinessandnetworkconstraints,and 3. Thereal timeend to endvisibilityofthesessions,serviceandnetworkbehaviorsforusage accounting,slaconfirmation,businesscontinuityandcapacityplanning Thenetworkadministrator sjobiscomplicatedbythedistributionofnetworkintelligencethroughout theipnetworkandtheintroductionofawidevarietyofnetworkelementssupportingadvancedip services.administratorsneedadifferentsession basedapproachthatgivesthempstn likecontroland defusesthecomplexityofdeliveringreal timeserviceswithinaconvergedipnetwork. ManyofthesefeaturesofferedbyGENBANDareuniqueintheindustry.TheSBCisalsousedasaprobe pointtogeneratesdrscontainingsessionstatisticssuchassessioncallholdtimesandpostdialdelay times. Finally,thereistheapplicationlayersessionmanagerknownastheGENBANDRSM.TheRSMcollects statisticsfromthesbc(s),forexamplepacketdelays,jitter,lostpackets,mosscore,sessioncallhold times,postdialdelaytimes,andmalformedsipmessagestatistics.thersmpullsthesestatisticsfrom SDRsandfirstreportsthemtothenetworkoperatortohelpthemmanagetheirnetwork.Second,the RSManalyzesthedataagainstmetricsdefinedpersubscriber,persessionandperapplicationto determineiftherearenetworkproblems,forexamplemosmetricsdropbelowacceptablelevelsorcall durationdropsbelowthresholds bothindicatorsthattherearesessionproblems.third,ifproblems arefound,thersmimmediatelynotifiesanoperatorvia orpage.finally,thersmwill automaticallycorrectproblemsbygeneratingnewroutepathsandupdatingsbcswiththenewpolicy information.thispatent pendingfeedbackloop,knownasthedynamicpolicymanagement(dpm), betweenthersmandthesbcscompletesthesessionmanagementsolution;thersmcapitalizesonthe SBCsessioninsighttodynamicallycontrolsessionsdependinguponcurrentnetworkconditions. 6
