2 Welcome to the Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science The mission of the Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science (HLES) is to deliver student-centered education that is accentuated by quality teaching, scholarly activity, and service. Although united by a common mission, each of the five interrelated academic units (Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Physical Education, and Recreation Management) has its own distinct body of knowledge to achieve the following goals: 1. provide undergraduate degrees in each discipline; 2. provide graduate degrees in selected disciplines; 3. provide basic instruction/wellness literacy and discipline-specific courses which support attainment of knowledge and skills that enable effective active lifestyle choices; 4. provide professional service to undergraduate students, the University community, allied groups, organizations and practitioners and 5. conduct theoretical and applied research that contributes to the body of knowledge in each discipline. The Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science is made up of five separate programs: Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Physical Education Teacher Education, and Recreation Management. All of the programs share a commitment in the accomplishment of our departmental mission which is to enhance the human condition through the development of physical, mental, social and spiritual health. The Department of HLES is one of the largest academic units at Appalachian State University with more than forty faculty members, seven hundred undergraduate majors, and twenty graduate students. All of the HLES faculty members are involved in individual or collaborative research efforts that contribute to the body of knowledge in each of the five respective disciplines. This activity also allows the faculty to remain on the cutting edge of their specialty areas and contributes to their effectiveness in the classroom. Although we are a large department, HLES has a reputation for outstanding academic advising and being student centered. Opportunities for student involvement in research and community-based service learning activities abound. Experiential education opportunities are also plentiful. Some of these are class related, allowing students to engage in research or service activities in the High Country region. Other experiential learning occurs in our numerous laboratories, through clinical supervision, or in full time internships. The department has an impressive record of placing students in nationwide and international internship positions, preparing them for exciting careers in the health, leisure, and fitness industries. We also have an expanding international program which allows students to travel abroad on study tours or study abroad for a semester or a year.

3 Through all of this, the faculty maintains a dedication to being effective teachers. They are actively involved in faculty development pursuits which help them achieve excellence in their teaching responsibilities. The department employs state of the art teaching evaluation systems that provide timely student feedback to faculty members and ultimately lead to improved teaching performance. We hope you enjoy learning more about the Department of HLES as you browse through our home page. 4 Athletic Training. The Athletic Training education program at Appalachian State University has been in existence for more than 25 years, was one of the first NATA Approved programs, has been accredited by CAAHEP from , and are currently accredited by CAATE. We provide a challenging program that encourages the highest quality classroom and clinical experiences for our students. Our program prides itself on providing the students with opportunities to grow not only professionally but personally as well. Our Athletic Training education program's philosophy is consistent with Appalachian State University's, that is, the instruction of the undergraduate student is the primary consideration for all members of our athletic training faculty. Our program treats the student as an individual and attempts to meet his/her needs. Secondary to instruction, the athletic training program provides a setting to develop the student's social and moral character. Furthermore, we expect the athletic training faculty and staff to maintain the highest standards of quality consistent with the National Athletic Trainers' Association Code of Professional Practice and the credentialing statutes of North Carolina. The purpose of the athletic training education program at Appalachian State University is to prepare professionals for careers in athletic training. We will do this in the following ways: 1. by providing open and challenging learning environments in both the classroom and clinical settings; 2. by providing the student with the incentive and skills necessary to remain current in the profession of athletic training; 3. by equipping the student with the tools to advance the knowledge base of athletic training; 4. by developing the student's interpersonal communication skills; 5. by integrating classroom knowledge and clinical practice; and 6. by providing an academic program that incorporates the six domains of the 5th edition of the BOC Role Delineation Study and the 12 content areas of the 4th edition of the Athletic Training Educational Competencies

5 Athletic Training Education Program Admissions Policies Application Procedures: Application Minimum of 30 hours of an evaluated active observation in Appalachian State University s athletic training facility Insight statement Journal Goal statement Three letters of recommendation Signed Technical Standards Personal interview Policies: 1. Admission to the ATEP is a competitive process. The top students are admitted to the program regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or handicapping condition. 2. The number of students admitted is based on space availability. 3. The above listed materials are compiled by the Program Director and reviewed by the certified staff athletic trainers. 4. Weighted items include GPA (minimum cumulative 2.5 from Appalachian) and observation evaluations. Priority is given to those students who have athletic training as their professional goal. 5. 6 and the 5th edition of the BOC Role Delineation Study. Appalachian State University Athletic Training Educational Program Technical Standards for Admission The Athletic Training Educational Program at Appalachian State University is a rigorous and intense program that places specific requirements and demands on the students enrolled in the program. An objective of this program is to prepare graduates to enter a variety of employment settings and to render care to a wide spectrum of individuals engaged in physical activity. The technical standards set forth by the Athletic Training Educational program establish the essential qualities considered necessary for students admitted to this program to achieve the knowledge, skills, and competencies of an entrylevel athletic trainer, as well as meet the expectations of the program s accrediting agency [(Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE)]. The following abilities and expectations must be met by all students admitted to the Athletic Training Educational Program. In the event a student is unable to fulfill these technical standards, with or without reasonable accommodation, the student will not be admitted into the program. Compliance with the program s technical standards does not guarantee a student s eligibility for the BOC Examination. Candidates for selection to the Athletic Training Educational Program must demonstrate: 1. the mental capacity to assimilate, analyze, synthesize, integrate concepts and problem solve to formulate assessment and therapeutic judgements and to be able to distinguish deviations from the norm. 2. sufficient postural and neuromuscular control, sensory function, and coordination to perform appropriate physical examinations using accepted techniques; and accurately, safely and efficiently use equipment and materials during the assessment and treatment of patients. 3. the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients and colleagues, including individuals from different cultural and social backgrounds; this includes, but is not limited to, the ability to establish rapport with the patients and communicate judgements and treatment information effectively. Students must be able to understand and speak the English language at a level consistent with competent professional practice. 4. the ability to record the physical examination results and a treatment plan clearly and accurately. 5. the capacity to maintain composure and continue to function well during periods of high stress. 6. the perseverance, diligence and commitment to complete the athletic training education program as outlined and sequenced.

7 7. flexibility and the ability to adjust to changing situations and uncertainty in clinical situations. 8. Affective skills and appropriate demeanor and rapport that relate to professional education and quality patient care. Candidates for selection to the athletic training educational program will be required to verify they understand and meet these technical standards or that they believe that, with certain accommodations, they can meet the standards. The Learning Assistance Program will evaluate a student who states he/she could meet the program s technical standards with the accommodation and confirm that the stated condition qualifies as a disability under applicable laws. If a student states that he/she can meet the technical standards with accommodation, then the University will determine whether it agrees that the student can meet the technical standards with reasonable accommodation; this includes a review as to whether the accommodations requested are reasonable, taking into account whether accommodation would jeopardize clinician/patient safety, or the educational process of the student or the institution, including all coursework, clinical experiences and internships deemed essential to graduation. I certify that I have read and understand the technical standards for selection listed above, and I believe to the best of my knowledge that I meet each of these standards without accommodation. I understand that if I am unable to meet these standards I will not be admitted into the program. Signature of Applicant Date Alternative statement for students requesting accommodations. I certify that I have read and understand the technical standards for selection listed above, and I believe to the best of my knowledge that I can meet each of these standards with certain accommodations. 16 Career Opportunities *(Available from Nature of Work Athletic trainers help prevent and treat injuries for people of all ages. Their patients and clients include everyone from professional athletes to industrial workers. Recognized by the American Medical Association as allied health professionals, athletic trainers specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of muscle and bone injuries and illnesses. Athletic trainers, as one of the first healthcare providers on the scene when injuries occur, must be able to recognize, evaluate, and assess injuries and provide immediate care when needed. Athletic trainers should not be confused with fitness trainers or personal trainers, who are not healthcare workers, but rather train people to become physically fit. Licensure and certification. In 2009, 47 States required athletic trainers to be licensed or registered; this requires certification from the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC). For BOC certification, athletic trainers need a bachelor's or master s degree from an accredited athletic training program and must pass a rigorous examination. To retain certification, credential holders must continue taking medical-related courses and adhere to the BOC standards of practice. In Alaska, California, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia where licensure is not required, certification is voluntary but may be helpful for those seeking jobs and advancement. Employment Athletic trainers held about 16,300 jobs in 2008 and are found in every part of the country. Most athletic trainer jobs are related to sports, although an increasing number also work in nonsports settings. About 39 percent were found in public and private educational services, primarily in colleges, universities, and high schools. Another 38 percent of athletic trainers worked in healthcare, including jobs in hospitals, offices of physicians, and offices of other health practitioners. About 13 percent worked in fitness and recreational sports centers. Around 5 percent work in spectator sports. Employment change Employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow 37 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations, because of their role in preventing injuries and reducing healthcare costs. Job growth will be concentrated in the healthcare industry, including hospitals and offices of health practitioners. Fitness and recreation sports centers also will provide new jobs, as these establishments grow and continue to need additional athletic trainers to provide support for their clients. Growth in positions with sports teams will be somewhat slower, however, as most professional sports clubs and colleges and universities already have complete athletic training staffs.
