1 International Development Office Rome, December 15th, 2014 Call for Applications QTEM - Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Management - Master Program Department of Economics and Finance Department of Business and Management This call is open for: ONLY FOR LUISS APPLICANTS: Please note the APPLICATION needs to be completed through Web Self-service please also see HOW TO COMPLETE THE ONLINE APPLICATION 1) LUISS students enrolled in their I year of the LUISS Master Degree in Economia e Finanza, majors in Economics, Finance or Banche e intermediari finanziari, in the academic year Selected students will spend abroad the whole Academic Year ; 2) LUISS students enrolled in their I year of the LUISS Master Degree in Management, major in Corporate Finance, in the academic year , who have inserted the elective course of Theory of Finance in Spring Selected students will spend abroad the whole Academic Year Applicants should have request by the end of November to attend the additional course of Theory of Finance in Spring 2015; 3) LUISS students enrolled in the III year of the LUISS Bachelor Degrees in Economics & Business or in Economia & Management in the academic year Selected students will spend abroad the Fall semester and one semester among Spring 2016, Fall 2016 or Spring Students will need to be compliant with all the requirements necessary to access one among the Master Degree Programs offered by the Department of Economics and Finance (DEF) or the Master Program in Management (major in Corporate Finance) offered by the Business and Management Department (DIM), either through the automatic access guaranteed to LUISS Bachelor students with a final Degree grade equal to or higher than 100/110, either through the Admission Test which will take place in March Selected students have to graduate in July 2015; 4) LUISS students and graduates in Economics & Business or in Economia & Management who have graduated starting from March 2014 and have not enrolled yet in the LUISS Master program in Economia e Finanza or Management (major Finance). Selected students will spend abroad the Fall semester and one semester among Spring 2016, Fall 2016 or Spring Students will need to be compliant with all the requirements necessary to access one among the Master Degree Programs offered by the Department of Economics 1

2 and Finance (DEF) or the Master Program in Management (major in Corporate Finance) offered by the Business and Management Department (DIM), either through the automatic access guaranteed to LUISS Bachelor students with a final Degree grade equal to or higher than 100/110, either through the Admission Test which will take place in March 2015; 5) III year students (graduating by July 2015) and graduates (not graduated before March 2014) both from other LUISS Departments or other Universities in compliance with the minimum curricular requirements indicated in the LUISS Admission Procedures 1. They will need to be compliant with all the requirements necessary to access one among the Master Degree Programs offered by the Department of Economics and Finance (DEF) or the Master Program in Management (major in Corporate Finance) offered by the Business and Management Department (DIM). Selected students will spend abroad the Fall semester and one semester among Spring 2016, Fall 2016 or Spring Students compliant with pre- requirements to access a LUISS 2-years Master Degree Program mentioned, are required to pass the Admission Test in March Graduates/Students coming from a foreign University, compliant with the pre-requirements to access the mentioned Master Degree Programs can access LUISS either through the Admission test in March 2015, either following the admission procedures for foreign students published on the LUISS website. General rules The QTEM (Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Management) Programme offered by LUISS is organized in cooperation with the following partner universities (http://www.qtem.org/academic_partner): MONASH UNIVERSITY SOLVAY BRUSSELS SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT, ULB UNIVERSITÉ DE LAUSANNE 1 Once received the applications the previous academic background of this category of applicants will be evaluated on a case by case basis. For the Double Degree Programme with the King s College a Bachelor Degree in Political Science is required and the final admission is submitted to King s approval. 2

3 ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY GOETHE-UNIVERSITÄT FRANKFURT EDHEC BUSINESS SCHOOL WASEDA UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITEIT VAN AMSTERDAM BI NORWEGIAN BUSINESS SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF PORTO THE HIGHER SCHOOL OF FINANCE AND MANGEMENT (SHFM, RANEPA) (TBC starting from Spring 2016) Participating students will have the possibility to attend 2 semester courses and respective exams at two universities among the QTEM Academic partners mentioned above. They will obtain the final Master s Degree issued by LUISS, plus the QTEM supra-national certificate issued by the QTEM network. Courses will be held in English at the partner universities. In specific cases the access to courses in the local language can be evaluated by the LUISS Academic Coordinator. Students selected for the QTEM Programme will be registered at LUISS during their stay at the partner universities, and they will not pay fees at the host universities, but they will continue paying fees to LUISS. Students will cover by themselves all expenses related to their participation in the program, notably transport, accommodation and food, administrative expenses, expenses associated with securing a visa, medical/health/accident insurance, books and personal expenses. Students taking part to this programme, only for the mobility towards universities considered European for the Erasmus+ program, could receive a small Erasmus scholarship, depending on the European Commission annual fund for Erasmus Project. Further information will be available in Summer Selected students, in order to achieve the supra-national QTEM certificate, will have to be in compliance with both (Home and Hosts) partner universities' rules and conditions, as for credits envisaged, attendance, deadlines etc. and with QTEM rules. B. Compatibility with other international programmes Students are allowed to apply for the QTEM programme included in this Call, for the Double Degrees available for their LUISS Study Programme and for the Student Exchange Erasmus and non-european mobility programme. 3

4 Students participating to QTEM, Double Degrees and Exchange Calls, who will be selected for the QTEM Program, will have the opportunity to confirm their participation to the QTEM Program within the established deadline (see paragraph H. Acceptance). If selected students confirm their participation to the QTEM Programme, they will be automatically excluded from the Double Degree Program they have applied for. If they confirm their participation to the QTEM Program, they will be automatically excluded from the Erasmus or non-european exchange destination they might be selected for. In such case, the QTEM selected student must also formally withdraw from the exchange destination, giving written notification to the Student Exchange Office The removal from the Student Exchange call will come into effect after the publication of the Student Exchange selection results. If they do not confirm their participation to the QTEM Program, they will not be automatically excluded from the Double Degrees, the Erasmus or non-european destination they might be selected for. Students that completed an Erasmus or Bilateral exchange in the previous academic years are eligible to participate. C. Available slots The total number of available slots for A.Y for QTEM is up to twenty (20). The Academic Commission might decide, by its not disputable evaluation, to assign none or all or a part of the slots available. D. Pre-requirements Applicants will be required to select and rank, according to their preference, all the destinations among the QTEM partner universities. Please note that applicants 3), 4) and 5) will have some restrictions in the choice of the destinations for the first mobility in Fall 2015 (they cannot apply for FEP Porto, University of Amsterdam, EDHEC Business School, Zhejiang University; these destinations can be selected for their second mobility). Applicants will be able to participate and are therefore considered eligible only if, by February 6th at 13:00: They hold a C.1 in English language knowledge proved by 2 : o International Certificates: 2 Students who are sitting one among the international certificate examinations of English knowledge, mentioned in the Call before February 6 th, may submit their applications for the QTEM program, attaching the proof of enrolment to the above-mentioned examination. Their applications will be considered after the complete applications received by the Call s deadline of February 6 th at 1 p.m. The results to the international certificate examination must be presented to the International Development Office by February 18 th at 1 p.m. 4

FCE (First Certificate in English), grade A BEC Vantage ICFE The mentioned certificates should not be older than two years. o University certificate (produced by the LUISS Language Centre), or a self-declaration in lieu of certification printed from the web self-service o Bachelor Degree totally taught in English o International Secondary School Diploma Alternative certificates of language knowledge might be evaluated by the Commission In case a LUISS student does not have a LUISS English language level issued by the LUISS Language Center (CLA) and does not hold one of the requested proofs of English language knowledge, he or she will have to pass an ad hoc test, to be held at LUISS on January 22nd, 2015 at 10.00, room 304A, Viale Romania 32. During the test the use of dictionary or other translation tools is not permitted. The following students are exempted from having to submit the aforementioned language certificates: o o o Students enrolled in their third year of Economics and Business; Economics and Business graduates; Students from other universities who are completing/have completed a bachelor s degree program taught entirely in English. Students who submit the GMAT certificate with a minimum score of 600/800 or an equivalent GRE (please refer to this table to find the equivalence A grade between 650 and 800 is strongly recommended) by February 6 th at 1 p.m. will have priority in the selection. Students who submit their application without presenting the GMAT/GRE certificate will be considered after the candidates who submit the GMAT in their application. Candidates will be required to present the GMAT/GRE, if selected, at the latest before the starting of the first mobility. E. Application Procedure The application deadline for participating to the selection, by completing the application and all required attachments in the web self service area of the LUISS website, will be February 6th at Students will be able to participate only if they are in regular time frame and have no pending administrative issues with LUISS. Only applications accompanied by all documentation and received by the application deadline will be considered. 5

6 F. Selection process The selection of students is made through the not disputable evaluation of an Academic Commission nominated by the Dean. The selection follows a 3-step process: Step 1: Eligible candidates will be ranked according to their GMAT/GRE score and their dossiers will be evaluated considering the analysis of their academic performance (percentage of obtained credits/obtainable credits and average grade, each weighting 50% and 50% of the academic score obtained by February 6th), the English language proficiency and the analysis of the motivation letter and curriculum vitae (also the Bachelor final grade will be taken in to consideration if available in case of ex aequo). Previous international experiences will be positively considered. Candidates who spent abroad for the Erasmus or Bilateral agreements the Fall semester who have not completed the registration procedure of their grades in the home university study plan are required to present the transcript of grades provided by the university where they have spent the semester. The Academic Commission will rank eligible students and create the short list for the next step. Step 2: The interview, which will be held in English, will be carried out by a member/members of the Academic Commission and the International Development Office Staff on February 12 th (TBC); additional members from the QTEM Corporate partners may take part to the interview. The interview will focus on motivation and student background and is a key part of the selection process. In case a candidate is not considered suitable for the Program, he/she will not be selected regardless of the academic performance, the positioning in the applicants rankings and the number of available slots. Step 3: LUISS will select up to 20 students and the names of these students will be communicated to QTEM s Central Office (QTEaM) that will rank students also considering the candidates selected by the other QTEM university partners. The QTEM Central Office (QTEaM) will assign the destinations for the Fall semester (A.Y ) to selected students by March Destinations for the second semester will be available at a later stage. G. Publication of results The selection results will be communicated by to the applicants on February 13 th 2015 (TBC). H. Acceptance Selected students will be required to confirm their acceptance through written notification by February 16 th 2015 (TBC). In case of refusal or missing notification by the deadline, the following candidate in order of waiting list will be recalled. Moreover, in case of missing notification, the student will lose the possibility to participate to the selection of the other Double Degree programme for which he/she 6

7 has applied. Recalled students will be requested to confirm their participation by written notice one working day. After this timing, the following candidate in order of waiting list will be recalled. No students will be recalled after February 19 th (TBC). Every refusal received after the established deadline, will be transferred to the Dean of the Department for the relevant disciplinary measures, which can include the exclusion from the following examination session. I. Bonus point added to Degree The successful participation to this programme will provide, according to the LUISS rules, an additional point to the students final Degree score. J. Further information Students attending this Programme are not allowed to request an official renounce of the registration in their LUISS career of converted grades of exams passed at the Partner University during their mobility period. Students can refer to the International Development Office /646; please, write to set up an individual appointment) for administrative issues and for academic issue to prof. Giovanni Ponti More over the ranking of the destinations, and the assignment of the final destinations, will also depend on the academic offer of the selected universities and will be agreed with the Academic Coordinator before sending the list of selected students to the QTEaM for the last selection step. LUISS selected students are expected to cover abroad two semesters of courses as requested by their study plan and, therefore, they will need to agree an ad hoc study plan with the Academic Coordinator before departure. Students can check the courses offered by the partner universities on the QTEM data base and rank the destinations on the basis of such courses. The QTEM Programme requires selected students to reach a minimum of 50 ECTS of courses tagged as highly quantitative or semi-quantitative in the QTEM course database during their whole mobility period, and on average a minimum of 22 ECTS of courses tagged as highly quantitative or semi-quantitative in the QTEM course database during each of the two semesters of mobility. 7

8 Among the whole Master program, students will need to take minimum 20 ECTS in one of the QTEM Elective Modules or they will not be awarded the QTEM supra-national certificate. The available Modules are the following: 8

9 QTEM Modules Finance and Risk Management Applied Economics and Public Policy Innovation and Strategy Marketing and Supply Chain Business Intelligence and Big Data QTEM sub-modules (as per the QTEM course database) Controlling & Accounting Finance - Actuarial Sciences Finance - Banking and Management of Financial Institutions Finance - Corporate Finance Finance - Financial Markets and Derivatives Risk Management Microeconomics, Contract & Auction Theory Policy-Making, Regulation and Pricing Tax Management and International Optimization Strategies Macroeconomic Models and Forecasting, Computational Economics Entrepreneurship Strategy; Industrial Organization; Applied Game Theory Marketing and Sales Supply Chain, Operations and Logistics Management Quantitative Techniques & Tools Business Intelligence In order to obtain the QTEM certificate, students will also need to undertake an internship of minimum 300 hours which can be carried out either in a top multinational company from the QTEM Corporate Partners network, or in any multinational corporation/institution proposed by the selected student. Students undertaking the internship, which can be carried out in Italy, in a QTEM country or in a country outside the QTEM network, will need to deliver a final report, necessary for the obtainment of the QTEM certificate. Please note that, according to the QTEM rules, the internship might be carried out during or after the 2 years of the Master Degree Programme with at least 2 consecutive weeks, but the final definition of the type of collaboration will be agreed between the company and the QTEM participant. A QTEM internship form and report will also be validated as a QTEM activity and will be necessary for the issuing of the QTEM certificate. The Academic Coordinator will evaluate on a case by case basis the possibility to recognize a longterm internship (600 man-hours, full-time TBC) taken abroad to replace the second exchange. 9
